things didnt work out so well with the conversion, torquingup the cam i think the vernier slipped then to the very advanced half (without me noticing), combined with no power to the vct module so the cam was advanced aswell....mix that with a fairly shaved head....it went rattle, rattle, bang.

bugger.

so the other day found a motor on ebay, $250 with 27,000 ks....barely run it. it had 14 hours to go.
bidding went up $100 but still $350 for a motor of that vintage aint to bad.

with only 2 hours of light each night when i get home from work makes things hard.

started pulling in out on sunday, the missus had some homework so i pulled the gearbox out.

monday undid the extractors at the cat, took off P.S pump and aircon compresser (dont wanna regas) took out the radiator, started removing anything else that might get stuck.

today pulled the motor out, with the bellhousing and both manifolds on....plan on putting it back the same.

toongabble motorsports will be busy this week :P

well i found the issue, snapped off all the exhaust valves....OH snap :P

well im taking the vct head and the original head to the reco shop tomorrow to get the valves removed from the stock head and put into the vct head.

oh well, better off learning the hard way then not learning at all.

everything else is fine, looking at using my original motor still.

once i change the valves it should be fine, will be paying very close eye on the timing this time around.

This time after you bolt the head back on, fit your cam gear, timing chain, etc. Grab your 1/2" ratchet and 22mm socket and with the spark plugs out turn the motor over using your index finger. That way if you have stuffed up the motor will stop and your index finger will bend instead of your valves.

I do this every time i touch anything cam timing related and it has saved me from doing what you did.

Sorry I didn't read your thread earlier.

For the time being I'm going to put the new motor in and fix up the old one with the vct head on it, planning to turn the motor by hand next time.

Going to put the flywheel, clutch, bellhousing and manifolds on the new one tomorrow

Then on sat will put the motor in, should have it up and running on Saturday night or Sunday.

The vct head is at the reco shop and the bloke there said in 17 years never seen anything like it.

If your going to do something gotta do it right.

not sure how the vernier "slipped"

using the original allen key bolts & brass washers, along with blue loctite on threads should cause zero hassles.

I'm not sure either. All I know the end result wasn't to good. It used torx bolts with the center pin. I didn't touch them as I had to go out and buy the bits....after the damage is done.

Changed the cam timing but couldn't find any compression...due to no exhaust valves.

Not touching the new motor putting in as is. Less hassles.

ran into a bloke today i went to school with, we both stuff around with cars so i asked if he can top of my valve job.....he says "done"

well about 1 month ago he buys a BA XR6T ute, and its been having over boosting trouble. well on tuesday he goes to over take a truck and he hears similar sound to mine, rattle rattle bang

shot a rod, shagged the block and 3 holes in the sump you can fit your fist thru.
