Damn man, looks like I'm not the only one that has had head issues recently.

I was taught that any new engine being built or when you replace anything to do with the timing gear, to take the spark plugs out & turn the engine over by hand, to check if the valves clear or hit the pistons. Once i was glad that i did, as i messed up the valve timing, and would have destroyed the motor had it wound it over on the starter motor.

I hope your new engine goes in easily & get's you up and running again.

Cheers

true. the head is getting looked at in the morning...iv given him the spare head so he can swap the valves and cut new seats.

hopefully get the other motor in the bay tomorrow night and finish everything off on saturday.

be glad to have my own car going again.

In the middle of the engine conversion should have the motor in the bay lunch time.

Vct head is getting a basic reco (probably needed one anyway)
It's also getting port matched to the manifolds and I also got a spare au bbm I have been smoothing out the inside.

Dont get me wrong but smoothing out the BBM or intake ports may cause it to not mix the air/fuel as good as if it were course making more turbulence to cause better atomization? smoother sounds better but probably not as practical as it sounds?

I had a thought last night. You do know that the yellow marks on the AU timing chain only line up once?

So unless you had the motor completely striped and reset all the gears and lined up the yellow links at the crank, the aux shaft and then lined up the cam gear, most likely the vernier gear did not slip and your timing was out a country mile to start with.

Just a thought.

Ed xr6 poly, I'm not doing with super smooth, just getting rid of the super rough castings.

Bbqburner, next time I'm doing the vct head on I will be getting the reco joint to do it, but the motor was at tdc when I did it and the vernier was off to one extremity.
But the idea of being off a country mile could be right to break off all the valves.

To be honest its really got me down, lost nearly all faith in my mechanical ability. With sucks because I'm halfway thru a full resto

Good stuff dude. Don't let the mistake with the cam get you down. We all make mistakes from time to time. I've made some pretty silly ones myself, cost me a bit of money too. I learnt from them tho...

Cheers

well motor is in and is running very smooth, drives really well, i have pulled stacks of motors out and this was the one iv every put back in.

very happy how well it drove, i have the 350kpa fuel reg on aswell and it is much more responsive.

has 200,000 less then the old motor so pretty happy with the deal.

got a clunk from the diff, i think the diff is up the s**t. way to much backlash.

i guess i should get it reco'd. i have 3.45 gears and lsd to go in so should cost me too much i guess.

Ohhhhh, clunking diff, bugger. As long as it hasn't gone "BANG" just yet, you will be ok for a while, until you get the new gear's & center in there. I guess it's a good excuse to upgrade?

Cheers

it is a good excuse for an upgrade, but still paying off the reco'd head so diff will need to wait.

all this stuff with the falcon means the panelvan is just getting a bit here and there. not as much as i would like.

also doesnt anyone know what gears au manuals got standard? just a forte not xr

I know what you mean there man. My panel van, i spent a whole of $12 on it today, for some rubber grommets for the freshly painted rocker covers. Soon i need a can of paint for the new a/c & alternator bracket & new belts, probably about $60 there. That's the most it's had spent in a while, but i have a lot of stuff stockpiled up, slowly working on them & fitting them up.

Cheers
