Hey Pete. How does the 160 degree thermostat contribute? - I was thinking of putting one in my LPG 5.0.

I know my timing cover is ok (stupid thing already been off this year), and Im using coolant.....

Hey Nige,
160(71c) is too cold because piston ring wear goes up exponentially at temps below 80degC so in my book a 180(82c) is the lowest I go. I don't want to wear an engine out for a minor performance improvement.
Truth be known, in this case I think it was a dumb a***' fix for a dodgy cooling system...it even had the air bleed ball punched out and then fitted upside down!?! C**k heads!

Pete. Is that wear rate applicable with LPG as well? I understand the issue with petrol. I'm curious if the wear rate is the sane as traditionally you'd go with a 160 thermostat on LPG as "it doesn't wear an engine like petrol". Figure you know the answers!

Good info to know

Hi Nige,

It's not actually to do with fuel, although upper cylinder lubrication is actually non-existent with LPG hence, the lube kits etc you can buy for LPG installations.

Pulled the engine yesterday...

Image

Tried to undo the HEGO ground manifold bolt and it snapped off, so now the intake has to come off...

Image

Bit of scunge in the pan but not too bad...

Image

Reasonably clean in the bottom end and it looks like the factory gasket actually failed because it was faulty. The pan had not been off before. Not a forged piston engine :( unfortunately but I expected that.
There's a bit of crosshatch still there but it's not as good as I hoped.

Image

The balancer pulley had a rounded off bolt so I removed two bolts that would come off and used the puller on them..the whole lot is being turfed anyway with a new balancer and underdrives going on.

s**t, you'd hope the driveline could handle the extra power and torque from those beauties!

Looking good Pete!

After some sidetrackin last night...ford-v8-f2/v10-test-fit-in-ed-t106451.html .... I found more carnage caused by f**k wits who put tapwater in engines....three of the four intake manifold end bolts snapped off. Had to weld a coupla bolts to the stubs to get em out.
Then the heater manifold stripped out the thread in the intake. Luckily I have a few spare HO intakes kickin around. Some new core plugs and some paint and it should be a goer tomorrow.

Ahh that's better...
Didn't get it finished because apart from that fact that I was rooted, I need some new engine mounts, a temp sender and an upper to lower intake gasket and it can go back in.
Haven't had time to bore out the EGR and intake for the 65mm t-body so that'll have to wait too.
I had a look at some mains and big ends and they look good so I've left that alone.

That looks great Pete, i actually like the grey paint, looks good.
Do you have a sand/bead blaster at home for cleaning up things like the lower manifold etc..?

Thanks Jeff,
Yeah I was actually surprised that auto1 had a can of Ford grey engine enamel...exactly what I wanted!
I've got a glass bead blasting cabinet in the shed but no compressor at the moment...luckily this was one i prepared earlier.
Know of any pacemakers for sale?

It looks pretty tidy now. If I had known I could of bought one of those gaskets up on Saturday, got about three at home. Any luck with the measurements from the pulleys on the AU.
