It looks pretty reasonable to me for a v8. I had the bottom end work done on my mighty boy, pistons were fit to rods but rest of assembly was up to me, supply new bearings, pistons & rings to suit 20tho o/s, grind crank, chemically clean & wash the block, deck the block, bore & hone 20thou o/s, supply a gaskit kit & there wasn't much change out of $1000.

But you see, you had pistons, bearings and gasket kit supplied? That quote from A1 is with no parts supplied whatsoever. Purely machining, checking and cleaning.

They check the clearances for the rods on the crank, separate from the block? Then bolt the crank only to the block and check clearances...?

Yeah that is true, but there is also a lot more machine work getting quoted / done on this guys engine. The machine work cost me $490 (3 cylinder block), rest was in parts & assembly of the pistons onto the rods.

Could you do that accurately enough? I was taught you check the clearances of the bottom end with the crank in the block, setup like it would be run, but there are so many idea's on how to assemble, check & run in engines.....

Cheers

The turbo setup ur using i wouldnt be using them exhaust manifolds i would be afraid they would crack.
I really dont have a right to say but with the engines im use to 4 cylinder engines to be getting them spooling u would be needing to hit around 4 thou before they start to spool.
unless u put a small compersor wheel and a large exhaust wheel should stop some of the lage problem also getting the center of ur shaft drilled to eliminate boost spiking.
other problem u might incounter is how are u going to run ur return lines back to the sump from a T- peace,
for that u would be needing to use some high gradded presure hose's.
But then again im use to mitsubishi's just getting to start to know 8's.
very nice turbo's what sort of heads will u be using alloy ? or orignal? or custom.

Yeh i just rang Active Automotive, are you sure there not really Active Industries? The young bloke i spoke to has never even heard of a windsor before and sounded like his balls were yet to drop. I wish you could slap people through telephones. I would of slapped him and said "look what you made me do". That line works well on women too i believe?

Anyway,

I just heard back from M & D Auto Engineering. The bloke there sounded very switched on and extremely experienced with building mainly Ford V8's. Here is the run down:

- Clean block and parts $100.00
- Bore and Hone block $380.00
- Grind crankshaft $220.00
- Balance engine assembly $450.00
- Re size conrods with new bolts $200.00
- Fit camshaft bearings $80.00
- Mount pistons to rods $80.00
- Final clean, assemble to short motor and
dial in cam $500.00

with $201.00 GST - It comes to $2211.00. Which i think is sounding abit more reasonable!
Yet to hear back from BPT Motorsport, hopefully will do soon.

cheers.

Considering that includes assembly to short motor, that's a lot better price man.

Cheers

Yes indeed, but i have no feedback from M & D, and don't forget A1 includes Sonic testing, acid bathing of all parts, etc.

I'm going with Leon at A1! Everyone i've spoken to says he is without a doubt the man to see. I just can't trust anyone else with my engine. I'm going to pay the extra $$, to have peace of mind and confidence that my engine is in good hands!

Now i just have to gather funds to get the rest of the bottom-end parts together, and get the ball rolling. I think with abit of persuasion and charm i can get Leon to assemble the bottom-end as well.

Mellings high volume oil pump, Rollmaster timing set and ARP conrod bolts are on there way from over east, along with the Edelbrock Elite valve covers. So atleast there's some progress.
