I considered getting an XJ model many years ago, the earlier one, they have a large motor, low body and light weight. But they have a reputation for being crap, like most american cars. I travelled in one of them a few years ago and could hear the door seals creaking very noticeably as the vehicle travelled over a moderately undulating dirt road. Chassis torsional rigidity was very very low, which translates into poor handling on road and higher NVH. But i think they got better with each model. After the XJ was the ZJ, then the WJ. And the 4.7L V8 supposedly uses less fuel than the 4L I6 in some circumstances, but even better for many is if you can afford the rocket and miserly turbo diesels.

yeah WJ
from late '97 onwards models became more rigid, but the reason for me why im saving like crazy for the WJ over the earlier models is the interior & exterior makeover. Mate that Falcon is nice, if the budget was there live axle from a 4X4 in the front and a Hilux transfer and you would have a one of a kind. enjoy it and stick it to them large 4X4s

In particular i noticed the ignition barrel, looked like the one my old HQ had, very archaic on a late nineties vehicle. I looked at the interiors recently on the internet and i agree with you, the ZJ is better, and then the WJ is heaps better again, and same for the exteriors.

Or prado/hilux driveline including rear diff and front suspension? Front and rear lockers anyone? Maybe even slot the diesel in and turn up the wick on the turbo/intercooler . . . if oil prices change? Another idea i haven't mentioned is an airbag conversion, allowing for low road height then high offroad height. But the cost/complexity/weight factors against it.

How strong are electric motors? one on either front wheel, on/off switch bigger alternator, big deep cycle battery and some form of throttle control?

As well as electric, i once saw a diagram using hydraulic motors for each front wheel. I think the idea is to avoid having a driveshaft, but then you need to be careful of unsprung weight. If you go electric you could have regenerative braking/charging as well. The system wouldn't need to be capable of much speed, perhaps 30km/h max(?), and a modicum of torque, unless you were beach driving in which case you might want a bit more speed. 4wd usually adds 250+kg of weight, which is a lot extra to lug around all the time just for those few occasions when you need it. And those occasions are especially few if your car is designed appropriately and has a rear locker. If anyone has the expertise to do the electrics it would be interesting to talk it over. I think permanent magnet motors like those in fisher&paykel washing machines might be the go.

I'm now toying with the idea of 275/60 tyres on 20"x9.5" rims for my BA wagon offroader concept. It would sure stand out, and need engineering certification.
Anyway, some more pics of my EL offroader, this time the positive lead i ran under the car for my rear battery. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

A battery lead cable tied to the fuel lines in any vehicle much less a vehicle that goes off road!!!!
Sorry to say but that is one of the most stupid and dangerous modifications I have ever seen! Besides the fact that it is massively illegal. It is not something to be proud of must less post a picture of it. I honestly sat back and said nothing about this build before because it is whatever floats your boat , but that is just plain and utterly stupid.

So you're thinking that i could say grind the fuel line and cable between a rock and the underside of the car and destroy the (double) sheath on the cable and then arc it to the underside of the car and ignite the fuel? I didn't really think of that occuring. The risk is low, but that's no reason to tempt fate. Is it really illegal, what is the essence of the illegality? I'll definitely think about this.
