Finally picked up the new motor from the depot.

I emptied any remaining oil and flipped it to check out the bottom end, and I took off the accessories and cleaned it all up.

Looks good and felt pretty tight. (lol)

Dizzy gear looks sharp.

Bought some new gaskets and stuff.

New 4480's and a Magnaflow cat waiting patiently.

Cleaned and primed the sump for some new gloss black.

And I found this sitting in the sump too.. can anyone tell me what the hell it is?

Still plenty of work to do so stay tuned :)

Hrmm.

Makes sense as it has marks on one side.

Is it something I should just not worry about?

Like I said in PM, I can't wait to hear this running again. I still miss the lumpy idle.
Smoothness, and quietness, just doesn't cut it. But I guess blower whine is an acceptable replacement.
Will be interesting to see what gains you get with the 4480's. I had 4499's. I think this engine will benefit quite a bit from them.

It's nice to see that regular servicing keeps the internals clean. :)
I only used magnatec, and alternated between the standard version and the diesel version. (diesel version has more cleaners in it)

That's definitely a bit of a timing chain guide. It must've had a fun couple of years sitting in the sump.
Hopefully, the guide has been replaced and that is just the old one that was accidentally dropped, and left, in the sump.
I never noticed any unusual noises in the time I had this motor.

We'll after reading about the forum and finding other stories about the timing chain guide, i'm not too worried about it. All that can come from it is some chain rattle apparently.

Tomorrow I'll finish painting the sump and throwing it back on, then i'll be checking out the head and starting on the rocker cover.

How old is the water pump by the way Paul? I'm thinking of putting a new water pump and p/s pump while the engine is on a stand.

it's the lower one that slides onto the 2 tabs on the timing cover and the pictured bit of timing chain runs on top of it. if it was in place you wouldn't see much chain from below.
