I didn't think it was, reading through the service manual. Maybe the vast majority is afraid of a little hard work. *Jokes*

This conversion kit I am getting is from an EA. My research tells me that the EA flywheel is different. 3 bolt vs 6 bolt. Does this mean that the clutch is bolted on with 3 bolts instead of 6? Would I be better off sourcing a different flywheel?

Hmmm.

An EA T5 you say.

Are you aware the gear ratios are lower than the later EB11 onwards T5.

Your XR has a diff ratio of 3.45 which means at 100kph you will be pulling approx 2200rpm. 1st gear will also be REALLY short. I have the EA T5, but with 3.23 gears, and I am wishing for lower rpms at cruising speeds.

Re the flywheel, source a 6 bolt item, along with a NEW matching clutch kit. Also buy a NEW clutch cable and spigot bearing. Reinforce the pedal box NOW while it is out of the car as they do bend.

Cheers
BenJ

Doesn't an EB/ED XR have 3.27:1 gears?

Nope.

3.45 gears.

Fairmont's and optioned ED Futura's could be had with 3.27 LSD gears.

Cheers

Yeah, I was aware of the lower ratios. The 4 speed self shifter is only doing 2000 RPM @ 100 km/h. So 200 RPM is not that much of a variation, well, in theory anyway.

I definitely will be reinforcing the pedal box before installation (I think there is a tech doco)and the firewall too.

I plan on doing this right and right the first time.

Edit:

Oh yeah, new clutch cable is definitely the plan

F**k yes!!!
Should liven the car up quite a lot haha

Also yep, BenJ you are correct in regards to the 3:45 diff ratio for XR's

If you need a hand with anything Ev (even just passing tools 8-) ) just give me a yell!!

Have to take me for a spin when it's done to convince me to do the same

Ok, I can confirm today that the new radiator has done the trick. Sat in traffic for 30 mins this afternoon, sun shining, air con on and in gear. The gauge didn't go past the 'R' in 'NORMAL'.

Awesome! Ready for summer. When it stops raining...

Following discussions from last night, further items I will need for my T5 will be:

- 6 Bolt flywheel
- New Clutch kit
- Spigot bearing
- New clutch cable.

Also, is the speedo transducer the same for auto and manual? Looking at some photos on BenJ's thread, it looks that it is the same. But, you know what happens when you assume.

Thanks,

Evan.

Yes, the speedo transducer is the same.

You can pull your one out of the auto and put it in the T5.

Cheers

Sweet. That had me worried.

I have my eye on a 6 bolt flywheel now.

Look! I have 5 speed manual trailer!

Image

Among other things I got with this kit were a truly disgusting EA console:

Image

A 3 bolt flywheel with Exedy sports tuff clutch with a little life left:

Image

Anyone want it?

Also a probably worthless EA CFI ECU:

Image

Want it?

The all important manual pedal box:

Image

As you can see, the 'box emptied itself out on the way home as there was nothing shoved up the output shaft. Speaking of that, I also got an EA driveshaft which will not be required as my car is an EB II, which has a bolt and flange driveshaft. So if you want it PM me.

Stuck it up the back of the shed until I can save up the funds required for the new clutch.

Image

First impressions are good. Input and output shafts feel nice and tight and selects gears cleanly. Time will tell I suppose. Casing was cast in 1988.

Thanks,

Evan.

the manual really livens the e series up, i went from an auto ef to manual el with a standard clutch and altho its not registered yet ive driven it enough to know that it is an awesome upgrade over the slushomatic btr auto, words of the wise if your going to put a stronger than standard clutch in and give it a little bit of hell be sure to install a fire wall strengthener plate, "fiend" on fordmods will sell you a fancy looking one or TROYMAN has done a tech doco on making your own if your handy with a welder, also would be a good idea to get the pedal box strengthened because they also crack and break and the last thing you want is to be stuck on the side of the road with a stuffed clutch pedal, then need the dash board out again to replace it.
good luck :)

Probably February to March. Hope your offer to help still stands lol. I think I have shot myself in the foot, money-wise . As I said, I have to save up for a new clutch. I seem to be winning a 6-bolt flywheel at the moment.

Check this out!

There is no other way of describing it. I have literally welded the s**t out of it! A firewall plate shouldn't be very difficult.

I am so looking forward to shifting my own 5 gears. Mostly to taking off in 1st instead of 1st and a half.

Cheers,

Evan.
