And a fallen bonnet does hurt...

Went down to Pick & Payless this arvo. I needed to get another set of contacts that connect the steering column to the steering wheel. The electrical connections for the horn and cruise control (where fitted, not fitted in my case). I need these so I can fix my horn......again. I didn't lubricate the pins last time, so they wore out in 6 months.
Not sure if I'm a fan of Pick & Payless' new 'filing system'. You walk up to the front gate where there is a computer screen. You select what car you want and you can see what parts are available on it. Each car has a lot number and the yard is divided into numbered sections. The cars aren't sorted into make an model anymore. Anyway, you take down your car's lot number and find it in the yard. I know it is probably there to help make their inventory more accurate. Seems to take the fun out of going to the wreakers for me. So, I got 2 sets and went up to the counter so I don't get accused of stealing. Guy says "Congratulations, merry christmas." Thanks... Also got some Carbon conductive grease from Jaycar so that they last longer than 6 months. The guy that served me learned something too. Hopefully my new bonnet struts will arrive before Friday afternoon so that I can put everything in this weekend. Thanks, Evan |

Hey all,
The other day I finally got around to sourcing and replacing my oil pressure sender. I sure am glad of it, as oil pressure is kind of important. It was a bit worrying sitting at the lights with the gauge sitting about 1mm above the low pressure redline! Anyway, I now get about 250kPa at idle at normal operating temperature. So now I have all 6 gauges functioning correctly! For all y'all interested, the correct sender for the oil pressure gauge (not switch) is VDO part number: 360.013. This suits XF-ED falcons. It is available at repco and burson's. Thanks, Evan. |

Cursed oil pressure switches! had to replace one awhile back now, had to go and buy a one inch bloody socket just to get it off.

I used my big stanley screwdriver, hammer and then 5/8" socket . The big pain in the hindparts was having to take the oil filter off to get at it. Further improvements in the last week have been the replacement of the front suspension bushes. Fitted by my mates at Girraween motor service. I was able to get urethane bushes as he was able to get a better deal on the urethane than rubber ones. Benefits? The car doesn't make a horrible groaning grinding noise every time I change direction now. The car now has turn in. So, now when I turn the steering wheel, it doesn't have a think about what I want it to do first, it just does it. This was quite handy on my girlfriend and I's trip up and down the Putty Road last sunday. Was a lot of fun. We had a very nice bacon and egg roll from Dave Thurson at the ex Halfway Roadhouse. I'm really loving my switch to the Ford. In my past cars, going up hilly roads was hard work. A great example of which was the Red P plater in the '85 diesel Hilux overtaking me on the flat at about 120 km/h and then going up a hill 2 km later passing him like he was standing still. Coming up to 200,000km now. So, oil change in the next couple of weeks. I've bought a set of new BOSCH plug leads, old ones are looking a bit, well, old. Motorcraft originals. Automatics be Damned!
Havin' a little trouble with the old BTR Auto. Occasionally, especially when cold, it sort of jumps out of gear between 1st and 2nd. It only did that before when in power mode, but has started to do it in econ mode. Changed the fluid and filter last weekend so that it now has the right amount of oil in it instead of being over-full. I even threw in a bottle of Nulon trans treatment for good measure. Seems to have done it more harm than good. This arvo, rolling down a slight incline in reverse, it dropped out of gear. Also, it won't hold gears when you shift it manually. Ok, it holds in 1st, but when it's in 2 position, it changes up as though it is in Drive. Done some reading on here. Seems as though changing the S5 solenoid may solve the harsh 1 - 2 change, but i don't know about the other stuff. Gonna talk to a trans specialist about it. What's the average cost of a reco auto? Because mine's an XR6 it's got a 91LE instead of a 95LE. Tougher bands or something? Or I could chuck it all in and go manual. Saw a conversion for $350 in QLD. Also a whole EA manual for $550. Manual conversion could be fun, but the cost of a good clutch, new shim for the clutch fork, spigot bearing, new clutch cable & peddle box/mods, will make it worth considering a reco auto. Reco T5's are not the cheapest items.
Are you sure it's not a shifter issue? When it's jumping out of gears, what's the Tbar doing? Is the gearbox mount new or near new? Cheers ToranaGuy

Cheers ToranaGuy Never thought of the gearbox mount. Probably is the original, like everything else on this thing. The shifter is perfectly still at all times and lines up in the quadrant properly. But does that necessarily mean that the shifter rod is properly adjusted? Anyways... I spoke to a local transmission specialist this morning and straight away he said it was a probably faulty S5 solenoid. I'm gonna get them to have a look at it on monday. Thanks, Evan. |

And today, adding to my transmission woes, the auto went into limp-wrist mode this morning. But after about five minutes it sorted itself out. Cannot wait to get this sorted out. Really wrecks the driving enjoyment. Thanks, Evan. |

That's a fair way under average of one of these car's these days!
I think I have about 440,000 on my Eb Ghia, I have lost an accurate count due to busted odometers & just replacing the whole cluster.... Cheers ToranaGuy

Odo was stuck on 188,900 when I got it. I drove it for about 1 or 2,000 kays with it inoperative, then I replaced the cog with a new one. So I really don't know how far she's travelled lol. My guess would be around 225,000, which is still a spring chicken for a 18 year old ford! Thanks, Evan. |

Ok, I went to the transmission shop this morning and got the trans diagnosed. We went for a road test and of course it behaves itself. Thank god for diagnosis ports. Plugged his machine in and as it turns out, I have a faulty inhibitor switch and speed sender, which will be getting replaced on wednesday. Apparently, the inhibitor switch effects the way the S5 solenoid operates.
Oil and filter change today. Also changed over the plug leads. What a difference having the right tools makes. Don't think that I would be able to do it without the extra long, long nosed pliers I picked up this morning. Thanks, Evan. |

This is a very nice example, good to see you are looking after it! Those kms are very low too.
Good luck with the Auto, hopefully it is just the speed sensor and inhibitor switch. Relatively cheap and simple. If you have it done by the trans place I'd recommend getting them to give it fresh fluid and filter, and they should be able to adjust the bands to tighten it up in an EB I think. I like what you have done with it so far, very sensible. |

I like what you have done with it so far, very sensible. Thanks man! I changed the filter and fluid 2 weeks ago and about 6 months ago. Service manual says do it only every 60,000 km and even then thats only after severe conditions. Ford must have a lot of faith in the box. Hopefully it will only be the inhibitor switch and speed sender. That way I'm only up for about $190 fitted. My next goal is to get the air con sorted. Hopefully before summer. I'm looking after my sister's Barina while she is overseas. It reminded me how nice air con is in a car. Thanks, Evan. |
