Yes today was better. I'm learning to make sure it's all the way into first before releasing the clutch. I think the box is loosening up too. It probably was a bit dry after sitting for at least 3 months.

I have to do something about the exhaust hanger. Doesn't quite match up and makes a really annoying knocking noise over bumpy roads, which around here means pretty much everywhere. I reckon if I cut the bit of the hanger which has the bolts on it off the manual and then cut off the hanger on the auto at a long length. Then bolt the auto hanger to the exhaust. And hopefully I can get a rubber exhaust hanger to suit the gap.

Nice work mate, great to see it's now a 5spd!

The T5 workshop manual can be downloaded from the Tremec website, it's rather easy but a long job to rebuild once you have that, and a couple of gear pullers. Been there & done it myself.

How was your input shaft before you fit the box, much play in it?

Cheers

ToranaGuy

Thanks, I would have to have a better look at that in hard-copy.

The shaft had about 0.5mm play, going by my vernier eyes.

Not much play at all, probably a pretty reasonable box.

Cheers

Hey guys,

So, this knocking sound was really getting to me. Chopping off the exhaust hanger didn't work. I could re-create the sound by hitting down on the gear lever. So, then I thought it might be the inserts on the shifter forks maybe.

So, this afternoon I ran the car up on ramps to check in desperation the play in the output shaft. I shook the driveshaft yoke and guess what it was. I didn't do the cross-member bolts up properly...

Doh!

I am pretty glad that I don't have to pull the box out so soon.

Incidentally, I would like to give a shout out to my lovely girlfriend Fiona for keeping up the morale and lending a hand where she could during the conversion.

Thanks,

Evan.

Not much to update. The car has passed rego for this year with the manual 'box installed :D and now has a cat converter mount welded up.

Bad news is that the water pump has decided to spring a leak. I thought it might have been the bottom radiator hose, so I siliconed that up last week. That didn't work. It's still leaking. So, I shall be replacing that in the next couple of weeks.

Well, I just got back from Wauchope and after 750km. It hasn't put a foot wrong. Sat on 100-110km/h all day and it loved it. Did 540km on 49L of 95 RON. That works out to 9.1L/100km and that works out to 31 MPG. Theoretically, that is a range of just under 750km from full to bone dry.

To be honest, I thought that I would use a lot more fuel owing to the increased RPM.

Thanks,

Evan.

Yeah, the ratios seem to be a good compromise. Pretty much get up to speed on the freeway and then never have to change gear. Goes up hills with a little bit more throttle and it doesn't try to run away on the other side. Only time I really had to drop it back to 4th was going up the big dipper southbound on the F3.

Plans? Mainly improve the brakes via slotted rotors and some decent pads. But, that won't be happening until I recover from rego and er... christmas. Still....

Today I was going to change my water pump over as I suspected that it was leaking. Just before I started to drain the coolant, I noticed that the top radiator hose was leaking from the thermostat housing. Since that I am one that will do anything to get out of a job if I don't absolutely have to do it, I decided to give the water pump the benefit of the doubt and fix the leaking hose.

I went ahead with the original plan of fitting an 82 deg thermostat and filling it with shiny new coolant. I will give it another week to see if I have any more leaks. I also fitted 6 new spark plugs. I think that it needed it. The old ones were a bit worn. The vee in the electrode was nearly gone.

I also changed my oil and fitted one of these Motorcraft brand oil filters:

I noticed that the six holes in the end were bigger than the Ryco brand one. Anyway, I'll see how that goes.

I also checked gear box and diff oil. They were all good.

Thanks,

Evan.

I hate radiator leaks :x
Similar thing happened to mine a few weeks back!!
Is that the colder thermostat?
If so that would be similar to what mines running and it never gets hot, even after a decent thrashing!!
Nothing like a good service 8-)

That fuel consumption sounds about right for the manual falcon, spark plugs would of made some improvement

Yep, standard thermo is 91 deg. Seems to be the recommended thing to do on here when you buy an e-series. Now it runs heaps cooler. It would get up to M and then pop. Sometimes, it would get up to A first thing in the morning which was a bit scary . In the short distances I drove it this afternoon, it only got up to N at the most.

Ah yep that's what mine would have in it!
I remember when we first got it on a really hot day it got upto the A with the aircon on which is why it got changed...
Mine only ever gets to the N if you get up it a few times on a really hot day otherwise hangs around that yellow line after the blue on the temp gauge but who knows how accurate it is!
Very worthwhile upgrade for peace of mind :D

Yes, it feels like I have the full 216 horsepowers now!

Bad news is that the coolant leak remains.

I solved another leak today. In my garage roof by applying a cartridge and a bit of silicon to every single bloody nail in the roof!
