Hi Evan.

AU fans are narrower and taller than the EF/EL fans which are a direct fit.

Thermo fans really are one of the best upgrades you can do.

Cheers

Thought that I would ask as I get get them for basically nothing. Anyways, it turns out that the AU thermos were fitted to the roof mounted radiator on his GQ Patrol. The Xf has EF/EL fans. Hopefully I can get to them before it's hauled away as he is going to Queensland this weekend. And the wheels need to be on to be towed to the scrapyard so i can't just take the rims. Looks like I'll have to get the tyres swapped over or somehow get some stockers and swap those over to the XF.

The wreckers should sell stockies quite cheap if you need some!
Just ring around...

Well, the XF got towed away before I could get so much as a wheel nut off it. Looks like I will have to pay retail for tyres and thermos.

EL thermo fans have been aquired from the local Jewmods used parts yard.

I checked out my rad and it has the provisions for thermos to be bolted on, so that's pretty cool. The thermos are so easy to remove on comparison with stuffing around with the clutch fan to get the shroud out. This is a bonus if I have to replace the water pump for the third freaking time!

The EB is now thermo fanned thanks to the tech doco, BenJ's help and Snap's supervision.

First of all we thought that it might be an idea to check to see if the fans actually worked by connecting them directly to the battery. Evidently they worked, then I removed the ancient clutch fan, then we installed the thermos. After I installed the relay bases we nutted out the wiring. This took most of the time, actually.

With the relays and fans mostly wired up, we entered the testing phase by triggering the relays directly from the battery.

First try: the trailing lead disconnected itself and shorted out a bit on the cylinder head.

Second try: No response from fans. Er... Maybe we should have connected the negatives to the battery.

Third try: Success! Oh... only one fan is going. Some troubleshooting later, we found it was a dodgy relay. Swapped it out and both fans spin up.

Then after all three of us taste-tested the coolant while siphoning it out, the temp probe was installed, coolant topped up and engine started to set the temp switch and bleed the cooling system of course.

Image

Ben then had to perform taxi duties and I sorted out the air con integration with another relay.

Just before the heavens opened, I had the car slammed back together and I was on my way.

After some adjustment, the fans now cut in on R and cool it down to N of NORMAL.

The car is now a lot quieter due to the elimination of fan roar and the AC is now colder when stationary.

Also, I put a new Jaycar purge solenoid in.

Cheers,

Evan.

I'd probably only do that if my air con compressor s**t itself lol.

That said, thermos were on the probably not list as was the manual conversion lol.

Nice work Ev!
If they're a worthwhile improvement I'll have to buy some when funds permit!
They neaten the engine bay up a heap

Speaking of neatening up, I tied the wiring up so that it now less resembles a rats nest.

There is some voltage drop, as was expected. With the air con going in light traffic, it sits around 13 volts. Is it possible to fit an EF/EL alternator without doing the serpentine belt conversion?

It has been done.

Search for Paulmac's threads. He did it to one of his cars.

Cheers
