This evening, the fuel pump tragically died. About 500m from home, actually. Quite happy it wasn't when we were in Minto, on the way home from go-karting. That was really fun.
Looks like I have something to do tomorrow. Hopefully I can undo the lock ring with a punch. I could make the tool, but really can't be bothered.

ive used the tool and the hammer\punch-screwdriver in the past.
both work rather well, just keep in mind the plastic locking ring may not like it much. moreso if its been done that way before too. also undoing the big hose clamp isnt very fun either. and here is hoping you dont have a full tank either. |

After much f**k around I got it done. One of those jobs you wish you took up the mechanic's whose shop you broke down in front of's offer to change it for you.
Only 3 of the cover plate screws hadn't fused themselves to the car with rust. My lack of a cold chisel rendered the impact driver useless. I had to use a pin punch to hammer the screw around. I ended up making the tool as flogging the ring with the hammer was having no effect whatsoever. I changed the design slightly, welding a M16 nut on the top instead of the 1/2" square hole. Jesus, that was tight. And yeah, I had 3/4 of a tank pretty much. I only spilled what BP would call a lot. Eventually, some time after lunch, I extracted the old pump and swapped it for the new one. Cute isn't it. I guess I'm used to pumps that are rated in kilowatts in my line of work. After I replaced the fuel filter, spilled some more petrol and reassembled the parking brake lever on the passenger side, I was able to take it for a test run. And guess what, I made it back! I stopped at home, let the fans come on twice and shut it off for 5 minutes. Then, I started it without priming the system. Started right up. Hot start problem solved? Fingers crossed, knock on wood etc. Cheers, Evan.

And as I mentioned earlier, the LSD isn't working anymore.

Ever since I changed the fuel pump over, the fuel level sender seemed to have developed a dead spot. The fuel gauge was doing weird s**t, going all over the shop, showing 3/4 full after travelling 374km (I wish).
Tonight I pulled the the fuel pump carrier out to seem if I could do anything about it. There seemed to be a dead spot between around 35 to 40 ohms. After giving the track and the wiper a clean up with 2000grit and bending the contact a bit closer to home, it seems to be better. While we are on about fuel, on the last tank which included the Bathurst run, it returned 11.19 L/100km. Hopefully the guage will tell me when it needs some more. Cheers, Ev.

Did you replace with a standard equivalent pump ?
Me is thinking of using a walbro pump for now in a stock EF , any thoughts anyone p.s regarding your build i like the car a lot and will be taking some of your idea's into my EF fairmont |

But if you have future plans for the engine or you have the pump laying around you may aswell use it

There's a big gash in the leather at the top with electrical tape covering it. I tried using a standard S pack 3spoke wheel and it was too big and I didn't like the offset. So I stuck the original MOMO one back in with the tape to stop further damage. Standard Bursons fuel pump BTW.

Been having some driveline vibration lately. Front uni joint on drive shaft is cactus. What's the advantage of the alloy shaft? I shouldn't have any troubles using a steel shaft with good uni's?
Edit: after application of magnet, current shaft is steel.
