Just fit a BA auto? If only it was that easy, money doesn't grow on trees you know BPT went right through the schematics for the EL and BA transmission electronics and came to the conclusion that they were both nearly identical. Don't ask me how, auto's are a grey area for me, i'm just nodding my head and saying "uh huh" haha. What are the exact differences between the early and late transmissions? |

Quote: I can tell you from first hand experience 5 of the 7 solenoids are wired different inside the box. I also suspect that some of the solenoids may be different or the valve body is different in the first gear selection.
Get them to review the wiring loom schematic inside the box, the difference on the common side of most of the solenoids will/should be obvious.

Check the black/orange (i think) wire at the ecu or near about if it's broken (open circuit).
That will make the auto go into limp mode.

Ahh, i was scanning through that last night but completely missed it. Sooooo, i guess the next question would be, would a valve body out of a later B series transmission fit into a early E series transmission? Or would it just be completely different in the way it works? It sounds like this is leading to the first comment 'just get a BA box' haha. Racer, what is this wire and what does it do? Unfortunately money is the issue right now, plus i like auto boxes. If a new box is needed, i'll just have to tow the car back home and keep it in the shed untill i can afford to buy a new one, or maybe a T56 of some sort....

Well, i've been able to track down the original gearbox from the BA that my engine came from, it's only done 22,000km's (same as the engine duh haha) but the wrecker wants $1000 for it! Does that sound reasonable? It comes with the bellhousing and torque converter.

You've come this far, I'd snap up the auto for that kind of money, plus it has low kms.

I feel your pain dude.. I would be driving around with a supercharged EL in an EA shell if my wife would let me buy the diff/gearbox and other bits I need straight away..
I'm going to have to get a second job and not tell her about it just so I get to spend it on "important shiny stuff".. rgds Frank |

Alright done. I have the BA gearbox reserved, i can't pay for it at the moment, but i will be able to save for it quickly as i have my tax return on the way. Nothing else is being done to the car, i'll be picking it up on a trailer tomorrow and storing it in my shed 'till i pick up the box, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. But it's all plug and play now, once the new box is in, it 'should' be a goer.

hey mate, I've followed this project right from the beggining but haven't posted becasue all my questions were answered along the way. It might seem trivial, but I would really like to know at which point you were informed the cost was going to be twice what you were quoted? I'm not going to jump to conclusions without your answer; I just get worked up when I see big dollar figuers without propper explanation. I work hard for my cash and I can tell you do aswell, and I hate seing anybody taken for a ride by a thieving business man who seems to be particulary good at telling you what you want hear. My interpretation of events in summary is; you making countless phone calls for progress reports over a long period of time with no answers or just enough information to get you off the phone, and as far as I can tell your quoted price was doubled at the end of it all when your emotions were high after hearing your engine start ater months of waiting. I understand that r&d takes time and costs money, and I think it's iresponsable to quote on such projects, because it's always going to cost somebody more money. The important thing is getting that magic number on a piece of paper that lists all the work to be done with a note that no other work will be performed before notifying the customer with a new quoted price.
I'm going to stop now and take a deep breath before I get carried away.... |

Sure do mate, and the good thing about this is that the mounting points are on the bellhousing for the cable to attach to, and all the wiring is in the cabin for the tiptronic switching, yay! I'm just going to mount it temporarily in the cabin untill i get everything running smoothly. ab_futura, you have basically summed it up to a tee, haha. You are right though, the $1500 i thought was for the full install, but turned out to be JUST for labour and R&D, all the rest of it was for a park neutral switch, new battery (because my original one spat it), looms which had to be sourced from another wreck, oils, fluids etc etc which added up to (including labour) $2916. I was pretty shocked that it had added up to that much, but it's lucky that they told me the final figure last week otherwise they would be waiting for me to get money together. I'm going to go right through the final invoice and see what i have been charged for. I have learned this time, to get a firm figure first, but for something like this it's a bit hard to tell what is needed, it's not like building an engine, you know exactly what you need to replace (pistons, rods, bearings etc), pretty straight forward, but for a project like this, you just don't know what you're up for. I'm over the shock now, so i'm just grinning and bearing it so to say haha. |
