Hids aren't legal to put into the standard halogen headlights at all, to much glare for other road users...

HIDs cause Road Rage. Very impressive project... but HIDs = fail.

Nice to see the progress, but the HID's - i dunno about them, i personally hate driving towards a car with HID's at night time, just too damn bright, or is it because they are not adjusted properly & hit me in the eyes?
My EB is a fair bit lower than std, so i guess that doesn't help. I recently put in some 90/100 W H4's and they are a huge gain over 55/60's. Good enough for me. I did once drive my torana with 2 candle power headlights, damn sealed beams! I've got a H4 lamp conversion to go in when it's back on the road. Cheers ToranaGuy

HID's are illegal unless the housing was made for them.. ordinary halogen lights are setup in such a way as to shine most light where needed and terminate in unsuitable areas (like in oncoming users eyes)
HID's can't work that way because they don't have filaments, so the directing must happen via the housing they are in... hence HID's in halogen housings being illegal. That would be a really cool mod for Fordmods.. find a factory HID light that is a close fit and make it fit.. then it "should" be legal. |

HID lighting is perfectly legal to use. I went and talked to two DPI licensing and compliancing centres and a car accessory fitter today and all three assured me that i would not have a single problem with having the HID system in my car. I also went on the WA DPI website and there's nothing to say that HID lighting isn't illegal. And as for causing road rage, i say bring on the biff haha , they're not THAT bright, certainly a more vivid light than normal halogen globes, not blinding, just super white. But in other news, work has begun on maiming and hacking up the shifter to make it as compact as possible to fit into the transmission tunnel. This still needs to be trimmed... |

Interesting.. because all the sellers of HID systems in WA that I have seen have been forced to label them "for offroad use only"
I used to work for a place that had the option of selling them and we were in the same boat. I'll look into it further.. I've known lots of cops with strange (and wrong) opinions of what is legal and what isn't. If they are wrong, then all it takes is for another cop to pull you up that actually knows the law. rgds Frank |

Yeah there's so many mixed stories out there on HID lighting. I'm going to make an effort to get to the bottom of this and find out once and for all if fitting HID lighting systems in cars that never came from the factory or was never even an option can actually be fitted with a kit.
Anyway, enough about the HID's untill then, ta! Haha |

On the subject of HID lights, I probably wouldn't fit them regardless of the legality but from a practical standpoint.. it would be a pain in the a*** having a car that attracts the bacon like michael jackson to a primary school..

I've been driving with HID's for the last 2-3 years and surprisingly NEVER had any issues with police. I've been pulled over a few times for RBT and other valid reasons, but there's never been a mention of the HID's. They're always happy to point out the out of date rego sticker (yes, im lazy) and bald tyres, but they never ever mention the lights. I think you'll find they're quite used to the fact that HID's come from the factory for many makes and models, so you really just look like another expensive euro or jap on the road.

I can't say I've ever had any mention from them about the HIDs either. I've had them for over 2 years now and have been pulled over for licence checks and rbts at night and not once have they looked twice at them. This is by metro cops, Mandurah cops and down Ravensthorpe and Esperance. The only time they said anything about my lights was when I put clear LEDs in, which looked like they had a tinge of blue in them.

I got a mention on the Melbourne tunnel info board with my HIDS and flashed a few times out on the highway but never a problem around town.

So pretty much i'll just stick to my theory: Don't give the police any reason to stop me and all should be sweet.
