Care to elaborate?

MMD, it's my transmission cooler, i have to have two male threads welded onto the cooler and have two fittings pressed onto the end of the cooler lines. Can't even think about starting the car without that done.

Well, ahh yeah. Umm...it lives.

As of 7:43pm, the Fairmont is FINALLY back on the road with no major problems. Actually, i only JUST got back home then from driving it haha. I clocked up about 80km tonight and all seems to be going okay. No leaks, no noises...nothing, which is worrying.

Anyway, the torque of the engine is absolutely amazing! There is no other word for it. But it's not a slam-you-back-in-your-seat kind of rush, but very linear and progressive, which is deceptive as when you take off flat out your already up to 160km/h in no time (and for the record that's as fast as i went). Plus the exhaust note...F**k...well, you'll just have to hear it haha.

A couple of small niggly things, my airbag light is on, cruise control doesn't activate and my horns don't work. Which leads me to think clockspring?

Also the gearbox doesn't change up gears when it hits redline. It gets to about 5750rpm and hits fuel cut quite agressively and stays there untill you lift off the throttle, then it will upchange a gear. While doddling around the streets it's perfect, changes are sweet and nice and smooth.

At the moment i have re-installed all the interior plus the centre console and all i'm using to shift between gears is the cable which is sticking through the floor haha, the shifter tray hasn't been made yet. BUT what i have discovered is that the shift range is still exactly the same as the old 95LE, the BA 97LE can still utilise the 3-2-1 gear positions! Where the BA shift gate goes P-R-N-D (then push across to manual mode) the selector can still be moved through to 3-2-1, just like normal, which is a bit of a kick in the guts as i have cut a bloody great hole in the transmission tunnel to incorporate the BA shifter. If i had known that the 97LE still had the same selector range i would have just kept using the EL shift lever. I think i'm going to go to a wrecker, cut out the section where the shifter mounts and have that welded back into the car, i'm completely off the whole BA shifter install.

But other than that, it's so great to be back in a decent car, that looks great and sounds great.

Next mods on the list is to fix the dangerously shocking brakes. So, new rotors, rebuild calipers, rebuild handbrake, new wheel bearings and seals and maybe a set of braided hoses.

I'd still go the BA shifter if I was you.

Don't forget, the B-series has that gay adaptive shift when in normal mode. And unless you have a smart ZF auto, it gets to be bloody annoying cos its never in the right mode you want.

You could try and rig up the EL power/econ switch to move it into performance mode (same as knocking the shifter to the left), but B-series lock out top gear when in performance mode unless you force it into 4th by using the shifter.

Keep that in mind before making anymore rash choices

you could make a hybrid of both...

make it so you have the PRND321, but also have performance mode coming off the left of D.

What shifter has that?
He'd have to make a complete custom shifter :?

id think just hack up the EL one so theres a gap for it to slide across to performance mode. lol

just a thought.

That doesnt work - the EF/L one is only designed to move in the forward/backward axis. The BA/F one is designed to go left/right as well

He is talking about creating a hybrid, and i would be thinking that would involve a lot of metal & plastic work, eg, modify the EL shifter to have the movement range to use as per the new shifter, and then then fit the lever from the new shifter into the older shifter.

Wouldn't be easy. To be honest i don't think it would be worth the effort.

Cheers

I started installing the BA shifter because i though i had to, i though that without the electronics, the gearbox wouldn't operate properly, but having driven it without the shfiter i now know that it will work.

What my plans were, was to close up the transmission tunnel again and
install the EL shifter. And like you sugeested, use the power economy switch for 'performance mode'. I'd somehow have to emulate the signal or resistance in the line, as the modes are changed with the use of magnets in the shift lever. I'd then have to somehow implement a set of 'shift up' and 'shift down' buttons.
