yea its the connection from the earth lead and the earth wires at the battery.. then that is earthed to the body through out the loom..

try earth the block to the body.. you may be surprised...

Yeah where the earth from where the battery originally was, there's a rather large plug with two big wires in it, this has been attached to the body. Basically, everything is connected EXACTLY the way it was when the battery was in the engine bay, just that the main battery cables have been lengthened.

I'll try a big gauge earth lead from the engine to the body, see what happens.

And thanks for the tip Frank, i'll give them a going over, see what it comes up with.

Well, i have an earth from the battery to the body, which is virtually the same thing. E-Series never had an earth from the block directly to the chassis.

My EBII Original earth from the block to the chassis.

You must Have to do this. Or otherwise the ecu & dash gauge wont read from the sensor where come from the engine for eg water temp, oil etc.

My EB series 2 originally had an earth wire from the batter that ran to the block, on the way to the block it was earthed on the body below the battery. On series 1 EB's i have seen an earth wire from the belhousing to the body.

In my eb, when i rewired it's main wiring for the battery, i have one running from the battery to the block, then one from the block to the body where it was originally earthed. Without that extra one from the engine to the body, even tho i had other earth points going to the body, i had all hell with the engine & sensors until i run a lead from the engine to the body.

Cheers

Just for the hell of it...

Seem to remember there being "little earths" connected to the BBM mounting arms too... Came from the engine wiring loom or somewhere? Other than that - Great big earth is bolted between the block and the alternator support arm direct to battery (which is also earthed to car body right near battery). In total you'd have about a foot and a half of cable from block to battery to car body.

Pretty much describing exactly what ToranaDude is saying...

Rightiho. 10-4 good buddy, out.

Right, found what the problem was  Theres a plug that comes off the negative terminal on the battery (if it were in the engine bay) which goes into the engine loom near the main fuses, this is very hard to push together and wasn't connected

SO! Now everything works...except...for the throttle and fuel gauge. The throttle flicks open for a fraction of a second when you turn the keys to 'on', i imagine this is the ECM doing a self check, but the pedal has no effect. The fuel gauge reads full for about 5 seconds the drops to empty.

Don't know about the fuel gauge but I am guessing the ECU calibration is now out. Perhaps an ECU reset by leaving the battery off for a while will help.

What did you join all those cables together with when you shifted and relocated your engine bay loom? Double check everything that you have played with, ohm meter will help here.

You did up the size of the cable, not just extend it??? Dont be surprised if you have a couple of volts difference, causing gauges etc' to not function correctly......Yeah, some of those plugs can be a b1tch to get apart, let alone connect...

Cheers

I have 260amp earth lead running the full length of the car to the block from the battery and also have an earth lead attached to the body in the boot area

if you got a descent size eath point in the body i dont see why you would also need to run a 5-6ft long earth to the engine. ive heard people having simiar probs driving big stereo gear and running an earth cable from amp in boot to battery and then they cut it real short and earthed it to the body in the boot and fixed the problems. also most amp kits say earth must not be longer than 3 ft. either though im talkin cr4p about stereos it just an example of how car eletrics are funny like that.

i put a voltage stabilizer and earthing kit in my nissan, and earthed it at throttle body and ecu housing etc and the car idles smoother than ever. might be an idea because stray voltage can give false readings if some sensors have low voltage range (eg 0.1-0.9v and u have 0.2 stray voltage messing with signals giving false info to the ecu because of an average earth)

my 2 cents worth of rambling rubbish

my old xr8 did that and it turned out to be a bad connection to the fuel sender...
have you touched or bumped any wires near the fuel unit???

Well we have the same problem in the EF, When we start it up the Fuel gauge drops, same as the RPM gauge and Temp and all.. We have changed BCM, ECU.. then got told it was the Alternator
