update,
LTD: got rego not long after the last post, went great but kept getting a little warm, swapped the radiators with the one in the fairlane and the temp stayed under control. that was until i tried to tow a car on a trailer, mind you it done great for the first part.. drove down to the southside and loaded up a EB wagon, towed it home but when i was coming up to my exit the temp jumped up and started leaking water, limped it the other 800m home and let her cool down. the bottom outlet on the header tank snapped off, and i only had EB ones laying about, so done a dodgy install so i could limp the trailer back, as i was taking the trailer back i was watching the temp slowly rise as it had done all day (was a rather hot 35+ degree day) and since the motor had done a hard days work i didnt think too much of it, as i neared the exit i was due to take the temp started falling only moments before it stopped completely in a cloud of smoke... 2 mins later i get a tow off the exit ramp from a 4x4 who took me to the next servo, a hour later the ltd is on the trailer getting towed home after renting the trailer overnight. the next day i surveyed the damage, radiator blew the side tank clean off which cooked the motor to a point where the throttle cable and cruse cable melted to the rockercover.. there was no rockercover gasket left and it smells like burnt popcorn lol. luckily for me the wagon i just picked up had an extremely healthy 4.0 under its bonnet, so i set to work and with help from the gf's dad (all my other 'mates' were 'busy' we got them swapped over. at first she wouldnt run on gas but after i let it idle for a while with lpg on and fuel on (cold start) she came good. new motor runs great, smooth, more power, exhaust note is quieter too which i like i still need to change the cruise cable with the one from the wagon, give i a service and install a tranny cooler. apart from that it hasnt missed a beat. fairlane: well not much going on here, it donated a few parts to get the LTD running, but nothing a day at the wreckers cant fix. in 2 weeks from tomorrow i pick up a cat back 3" exhaust, a friend of a friend paid 1100 never fitted to a car which i got for a fair whack cheaper then that. so now i need a few 3" bends, straights and a 3" cat and then the exhaust and intercooler piping will be all done which will leave me to finish off the water feed, ECU, hand brake and diff to do. then it should be good for the road running 9psi on a stock motor and box which i dont expect to last but after all its a weekend car so it wont be out that often. ill get some pics of the LTD all cleaned up in the next few days. she doesnt scrub up too bad for an almost 22 year old car |

Good story man.... Particularly like the "swapped the engine with help from one guy as all my mates were busy" bit.
TYPICAL huh? When someone is having trouble fitting a supercharger to a V8 Lexus they managed to suck everyone into their pit of activity. When I bent a clutch fork meaning the cable has nothing to hang onto everyone was busy "preparing to go on holiday" or "working" or "church". (Okay, Church was made up, but you never know...) And yes, I did manage to get the clutch working again. The cable is now CABLE TIED to the clutch fork. It's done a thousand K and only re-snapped twice. Which reminds me - Must pick up some more cable ties as the passenger footwell appears to out of stock. |

Sounds like u had a great adventure with the ltd. have u found a reason why it overheated, do u have some el thermo fans in it or is it still the original clutch fan?

haha yeah... it was in fact holding the rotor cap down not the dizzy itself...
i guess i should update it... it died.... lol, well a short story for those interested, those who arnt stand in an elevator for hold style music while others read. took my son to daycare and as i pulled into the carpark she just died. took him in and came back out and it started fine... went to work, came home not a problem, dad came to take his trailer back so i moved the car, as i moved it it died again and didnt start. had spark but no injectors. first thought was LPG relay, so mucked around with that and nothing... long story shorter.. dodgy wire on the return wire to injector power. re-done the connection and got injectors but no spark... replaced dizzy, still nothing, checked coil... rooted, tried my 5 spare coils and all dead.. so bought a new coil and bingo spark to the dizzy but not after.. yet another dizzy in and after mucking around with timing we got her running good as new. so 3 dizzy's 7 coils and a heap of re-wiring she is great again. she is now running a brand new rotor cap (as the coil supply was a bit rooted and not coming out (dont know how it was running before) and new red cap so its easy to see where the leads go lol my header tank is leaking and none of the wreckers around here have any in stock and im not keen on paying 70 bucks for a new one as thats 2 tanks of gas! if this new job comes in ill be spending some cash on it, new hoses (the ones that wernt replaced during the motor swap) new dizzy (his one was a spare used unit) new leads and plugs, new throttle cable, header tank, head gasket water pump and get the gearbox looked over. over the next 2 weeks the exhaust will be fixed, steering rack replaced lowered and new power steering pump fitted. |
