I aquired a UNIFilter element, so I fitted a pod into the airbox.
I trimmed down the flange and made it flat and bored out the I.D. a little to fit a 90 degree mandrel bend I had leftover from the log manifold setup. Attachment: trimmed down.jpg Attachment: Trimmed.jpg Fitted nice and snug with a bit of silicone to be sure it was sealed. Attachment: 3 inch bend.jpg Bolted it to the airbox, and you may notice the grind mark hatching, I did that so the filter wont slip off the end of the pipe, as the mounting position faces the pipe downwards when wounted the filter kept slipping off from weight and vibration.. this gave the filters flange somthing to grip on.. Attachment: UNI filter.jpg The oil style UNI filter didnt last long, too messy, and too much maintenance. So it now has a pod filter.. Induction sounds nicer and a little deeper now. EDIT: I dIscovered the angle the filter sat on allowed the oil to drain and drip into the bottom of the air box and dribble out the water drain hole in the bottom, this came in contact with the rubber grommet for the carbon canister lines and turned it to mush.. hence afore mentioned issue with the serious vacuum leak.. I have since replaced the unifilter element with a regular type pod.. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

RE fuel hoses.
if you cut off the clamp around the hose on the BBM fuel fittings you are left with a barb which you just put a new hose straight on. |

holy moly!! almost a year since my last update???
Time Flies!! Well (I'm not sure if i mentioned) not long after my last update the aux shaft did its thing in the EF engine.. I didn't swap the dizzy cog off the EF unit... wish i had read a little more about that somewhere when i was doing the conversion... ANYWAY.. I worked a deal with the wreckers for the EL Tickford engine I mentioned previously that was out of the car I got my ECU from.. and quickly had that cleaned up and fitted to the car... Unfortunately after start up I found it had some sort of bottom end knock I suspected was a big end bearing. A quick call and the wreckers gave me a rebuild kit, so a week later I pulled the engine down and started the prep. I found the crank was scored on 2 pistons so I had to strip down a ED engine too for the block, rods, crank and pistons. At this point I encountered some issues with trying to rebuild the engine.. Ill boil it down and say too many cooks spoil the broth, the true nature of a few mates shone through, and it has taken me 8 months to rebuild an engine on my own. But I finally got it and I'm better off for it.. It is an EL XR6 Tickford engine. The head has had the ports cleaned up, it has (From memory) a 549 crow cam with a vernier cam gear, I assume the valve springs have been upgraded but I'm not 100%. As I mentioned I also have the J3 chip with tune to suit the setup. Heres some photos of how it sits today.. So I have put the NA front back on the Lowlane to return it to its true glory. Attachment: Up2.jpg I currently have the sedan carpet sitting in place in it but it is too short so I'm chasing down a NF/NL Fairlane carpet. I followed BenJs cluster loom but didnt have the soldering equipment to do the same thing he did with the plugs so I used 3 8 pin plug kits and wrote out a schematic.. this took 3 days of breaking my brain to work out but HOPEFULLY i got it in the end.. I still have the wiring crossover sheets if anyone is interested.. but here are some pics of the final result.

During all this time the fairlanes started appearing left right and centre and I ended up with a few..
First was a crashed NC V8 with the Engine and Box removed. I stripped off the super lows and some other parts and scrapped it. Next came a NA fairlane.. It was full of rust with next to no boot lid left, had no power steering or brakes and a tired engine and box. This also got stripped down and the front end went back onto the Lowlane (as above), and the rest went to the parts shelves. But then this came along. Attachment: DC1.jpg Attachment: DC2.jpg Attachment: DC Eng.jpg Its a 94 DC LTD that was owned by a private hire company manager and parked in a shed when he upgraded. It has a mint fabric interior except for some cracking wood grain, but being real wood I should be able to restore it. Has anyone done this before? I had a little search but haven't found much yet. Full LTD options except a sunroof. And, while I thought it was simply another cardinal red V8, it seems to have a more purplish colour, Ill have to get the code and check but it is an interesting colour i haven't seen much before. Thanks to NCIILANE for bringing it to my attention.. More on the DC below.. I also came across a EF XR8 that is factory manual. I stripped this down too for the interior parts I needed to finish the EL interior conversion in the Lowlane. SEE THE FOR SALE THREAD FOR PARTS... ford-parts-for-sale-f17/fs-mixed-ltd-fairlane-and-xr8-parts-t125589.html I was also blowing chunks thinking I had saved a few grand on a V8 manual conversion kit.. untill I found that the bush mechanics had put a 6 cyl box back in ..(thats a really baaaad thing to do.. It obviously worked for a while but the whole thing must have vibrated like a MOTHER!!!) The clutch fork must have come off the mount in the bellhousing because the mounting point for the clutch fork is munted to the clappers. And while chasing a kangaroo/jumping an anthill something caught on the handbrake and ripped the whole real cable setup off the diff... so it wasn't that much of a win.. Back onto the DC...
It has 400xxx klms on it and when it first got towed to me it was turening over but not running. I blew up my face with start ya bastard (now nicknamed start ya Jacob at the workshop) testing and found the fuel pump had pooped. so i replaced that and it started instantly and blew thick white smoke for about 15 mins as it cleared itself out.. Went for a spin and did a burnout and it was pretty good despite the requirements. As mentioned I was planning to manualize it, however that has fallen through for now.. I took the brake lines from the scrapper NA which didn't have the ABS and I'm planning on removing the system from the DC to simplify it a little and the brake booster currently needs replacment. Anyone done this before? The SLS has pooped too so that will be removed and I'll be fitting the lowered springs I have from the scrapped NC.. Otherwise its pretty neat inside so its mostly gonna need mechanical TLC. I may end up rebuilding the XR8's engine for a fresher engine, and the gearbox is tired. Just need funds for a fluid freshen up and a service.. I'm planning to make it a nice cruiser in comparison to the NA being my race car, some underdrives and thermo fans, upgrade the ignition system and some extractors and exhaust.. Im quite happy with it overall, the colour as mentioned needs sussing out, but it will fit in quite nicely with the Fairlane.. Thanks for reading, this took me a looong time to do so I hope it is worth it..

Had a quick look last night when I was at the shed an the paint code is B8.. Which I can only find asan EF/EL colour Bordeaux Red..
Although its a 94 model I just can't find the code in EA-ED. anyone read this?

Finally got to reading through this..... love the colours on the original ea motor!! Looked schmick as love the amount of time and work to fix the gearbox probs to, definitely shouldnt s**t itself now minus cable lol.... any more progress with the xr6 motor, cam? And yes a twin turbo 250 xflow would be sweet!!!!!

Cheers dude. The paint did come up pretty well on the old engine. I couldn't be bothered again for the BBM though lol..
When I next do a conversion (probably on the LTD) I'll be gettin the firewall done and probably use the Mal Wood pin kit from the start.. Lessons learned there.. Nows the time I wish I had a clone.. My foots all f**k up and I can't get into much work lately. Got a plan to hit up the local wreckers to do some work for the NF/NL fairlane they have... White 5.0 Auto... Might be worth acquiring.. And yes.. The AAT is pure cargasm.. I'd cut out my own left nut to own it or any of the odd rare falcons..

Great thread mate. Wish I'd started into Fords when I was younger, had more time and money lol.
Somehow acquired an 90s EA S-Pac grandpa and deciding what to do with it. Your enthusiasm has certainly go me wanting to be modding. Cheers, Steve |
