Have had plenty of chances to buy some pretty decent 2nd hand and rebuilt Garrett turbo's, even had a custom auto fabricator lined up to fab up a turbo log manifold for cheaper than I could get a Snort one shipped over for, but just couldn't bring myself to spend the money on it knowing that the whole idea could likely get abandoned half way through if I picked up an 8 somewhere along the way. I still have that ported head that will go on (just needs springs, exhaust valves and some machining work), will most likely get a more aggressive cam grind done, J3 chip from TiPerformance to alter the tune, LSD etc but that's pretty much it. Once that is all done I might just keep the car as is, and look at buying either a e-series era XR8/Ghia/Fairlane/LTD or possibly save up a bit more for an AU XR8 to have fun with - they all seem to be getting a bit cheaper. At least you are smart enough to know your own self imposed limitations. So many young blokes waste money on a project and more often than not end up in disaster. Keep up the good work and I hope you find the V8 you're looking for. |

Cheers Troy Yeah mate, V8's are where it's at. It's taken me a while to finally accept it lol. Would love me a Series 3 AU XR8 after seeing some nice examples on Trade Me, if only we had the money hey.. {USERNAME} wrote: At least you are smart enough to know your own self imposed limitations. As soon as I own a V8, it'll be up on Fordmods for sure ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Boot Install V2 = DONE! The new $40 jigsaw from Mitre 10 - weighs at least 3x as much as the one that blew up, works brilliantly too. Has adjustable pendulum settings, adjustable speed, came with a straight edge guide and even has an LED downlight on the blade (for when you're cutting in the dark? lol) The new hole after the jig had it's first workout. Then I grabbed out the caulking gun and sealed up all the internal joins with some Selleys No More Gaps. Carpeted up the front face, added some polyfill to the walls and then got stuck into crimping and soldering up the connectors and wiring up the voice coils. Dual 4 ohm coils per sub, wired in parallel to bring it down to 2 ohms per sub, then both subs wired in parallel to the amp to bring total impedance down to 1 ohm. Old school spade terminal technology and bright fluro yellow butt connectors Screwed the sub's down securely, then chucked the box into the boot, wired it up and tested them out Results? Haven't tuned them yet or even cranked them up loud enough to really see how well they perform so only bumped the gain up a tad to try get a feel for how they sound. At about 1/2 of my normal listening volume (didn't turn it up past there as it was starting to vibrate s**t in the carport) they sounded pretty damn good . Nice smooth and very accurate bass, not droney like that ported Pioneer setup I had last before. Seems to play nice and flat too, no noticeable peaks that I can pick up on so far, and jeez it picks up lower frequency bass lines quite well. Definitely is nice to hear sub's that actually put out good quality sound as opposed to sub's just thump and go loud. Still will be interesting to see how loud these puppies go at full tilt, I'm not expecting them be amazingly loud though, after all they are know more for their SQ capabilities rather than overall output. Pretty wrapped with how it turned out looks and sound wise |

Cheers Slo
Finally got a chance to tune the gain properly on the way home from work while parked up on the side of the road lol - sounds much, much better!! The gain is probably set at around just under 1/3 of the way now (I've got a little bit of leeway to up the gain a bit more, but I'll wait till the front speakers are up and running before I re-tune it to suit), bass boost set at about 2db out of 18db, seems to play pretty happily with it set there, no clipping/distortion etc. The SQ of these things is nothing short of excellent, very detailed and accurate, pretty musical, and they also aren't fatiguing to listen to compared to other sub's I've had in the past. They actually go quite loud and hit fairly hard, not earth shattering, but much better than I expected going by some of the reviews I had read about their overall output. All in all, I'm loving these IDQ12v2 subs so far, the pair seem to be eating up 1000wrms beautifully . Would love to try out some IDQ12v3's though, apparently they a nice step up from the V2's, similar SQ but with more output The new setup has already arisen a few issues though. Parcel shelf needs attention now, getting massive vibrations from it which is quite noticeable from inside the cabin with the volume up a bit, so that is definitely getting sound deadened sooner rather than later. Have to try sort out the LCD display on the distro block too, with the volume up a bit, every time it plays a hard kick drum bass note, the display blanks out, then recalculates the voltage, only to blank out again on the next bass note it hits, might have to fit in some rubber in behind the display somehow and hope that works Also getting a slight bit of light dimming with the headlights on and the stereo turned up now. Probably a good time to do the big 3 upgrade now even though it should have been done long ago. |

I'll try mate, but it'll have to be next time I take the install apart as it's all bolted together and there are some really odd shapes that are almost impossible to measure without taking everything apart.
Best way to do these things is trial and error (basically what I've done with everything lol), ensures the absolute best fitment I reckon. |

Nato! you already got enough bloody cam gear now haven't ya? lol. I was thinking about that cam, then when it said 'pick up only' I thought i'd just flag the hassle. Should have thought to ask if you could pick it up for me... then again, I should have known you were just going to buy the damn thing - hahaha. Hope its a good un mate - says on F/C website its only first avail. grind after factory. Let me know if you intend on parting with any of your other cam gear bud. I'll be keen for sures. Let's just hope this one doesn't get lost in the post like the other one did. Peace, Al.

What's going on here? All these Wellington dudes... Wow.... I found an old AU Monty cam at my mate Butlers the other day. Got me thinking...
How much do you guys actually have to spend on cams and the like? And anyone from Wellington wanna race up a hill or two? |

Goldfinger - Haha Al, yeah mate, gotta be quick on Trade Me!!
I saw it come up and had to grab it. Much cheaper than what I can get a brand new grind done for and since this particular cam has never been used since the grind it was a no brainer really. I've had good experiences with Franklin Cam's so couldnt pass up the opportunity to buy another cam. I spoke to Adrian (the guy behind Franklin Cam's) and he said it's basically their profile above the XR. It seems to be the most popular grind among the e-series guys in NZ, 2 people I know of have the same grind (efxr6wagon on here has one in his XR6 wagon and got 148rwkw from memory and another guy down in Gisbourne had one in his supercharged EF XR6 which was nuts) - both had positive things to say about it so it'll be interested to see how the cam goes. Compared to my current cam spec wise, it has much more lift on the intake, a tad less duration overall, and wider lobe centres - I'm expecting it to have a more broader torque curve and be a bit nicer to drive with compared to what I have now which seems to have a strong punch as soon as it hits around 2500rpm then flattens out just before the limiter. They are still both very much baby cam's, but will do for now until I have a motor that can handle more rev's with a need for a more aggressive cam. If either of them comes up for sale, I'll let you know LowKey - yep, all the good s**t goes down on Trade Me. Haha nah, just scored me a different cam to try in the Fairmont Fiend - Wellingtonian take over! How's Futurlane going mate? Noticed you were selling an AU XR6 motor on trade me, why not take the head, hot it up a bit and get a big nice f**k-off profile ground onto that AU cam you've come across? Hahaha. Clearly I don't have that much to spend, I've already spoke with Chris @ Wade Cams nearly a year or so ago now saying I'll be ordering a 1543b profile as soon as I send my cam to you - needless to say, that cam is still sitting in my garage waiting to be sent across the ditch . Postage costs, lack of credit/debit card, CBF etc back that up I guess.. I'm not from Wellington, but if I down there or you're up here then it's on -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So obviously with the above being said, I've been looking at another cam to try out. Last few days I have been asking around at pretty much every cam grinder locally on what they can offer. One place down in Palmerston North (Kiwi Cams) supply Crow Cams as they are the NZ distributor, they can also pretty much grind cam's to any of Crow's specs or any of their other specialised grinds which they mainly offer for stock car racing. Had another mob up in Auckland by the name of Auckland Cams which had a few decent grinds too, but their mild grind for street applications seemed a bit too mild for my liking judging by the low-ish duration and lift. Like Franklin Cams though, they had some monster stock car racing cam's that would need require some epic rev's out of the almighty i6!! So with all things considered, I ended up buying a Franklin Cam's RH24B profiled/reground (but not yet used) camshaft off a seller on Trade Me last night for $150. Will pick that up Sunday morning and maybe chuck it in the following weekend and see how it differs from the current cam. Since contacting all these cam place's, I have now decided to grab some Crow uprated springs thru Kiwi Cams or another place not far from them that also bring them in. Seeing as though it'll be running a very mild cam for the time being, I'll probably settle for some XR spec springs which should cope with the higher lift no sweat. Have decided I'm happy with 3/4's my car audio setup at the moment, i.e subs's, amps, headunit, rear fill.... but with the new subs in which are focussed on SQ, I thought I'd better install a front stage that was more SQ focused to match. I've already bought an E-Audio 280AB 2 channel amp to power the fronts, so that rules out going active for the time being, and the DD's are not SQ focused so I've decided to fit the DLS UP6 woofers, and buy some nice tweeters to go along with them. All that was missing was some decent quality x-overs so scored a pair of Rainbow Profi Vanadium CS265 x-overs for freaking cheap 2 days ago.. Came home today to find these beauties packaged up for me Lol, so much for being over car audio, or so I thought! I'm now looking at tweeter options and have come across some nice, relatively cheap Seas Prestige offerings which I'm keen to give a go >> {DESCRIPTION} My to do list right now is pretty damn long and looking quite expensive, so many mod's I want to do, so many parts I want to buy, but have a heaps of things that need to be fixed up, replaced or renewed - we'll see how things pan out over the next few weeks |

Fiend what hill? Rimitukas??
And kwik, my mates got a xg ute, with some grind in it, from the cam place in palmerston north. Idles pretty much the same, just a bit of a rough bit to it. As for power difference, Down low doesn't seem to be as good as a standard cam, but up top in the rev range, f**k the thing screams lol. We are just in the process of putting a BBM on it, Should be going tommorrow, should go alright all going well.

Sorry mate, not at the moment. Currently have a set of leads that are still in good nick. Maybe throw them up on Trade Me, might be able to get your money back
Managed to pick up the cam today which was good, the thing has been sitting around for a while now judging by the date engraved on it (Oct 2005) yet it still looks freshly ground. Had a bit of yarn with the seller while I was there, top bloke - has some nice Ford's in his collection too Fingers crossed, I may just chuck this bugger in tomorrow lol - pretty keen to see how it performs. Re-sprayed the swaybar today also, was a pretty quick dodgy job as I had to rush out to go pick up the cam but it turned out half decent. I've got the 30mm bushes to suit (polyurethane 'PolyTuff' items) so that's pretty much good to go in tomorrow if things go to plan. |
