Thanks bud, i used some good old masking tape to tape up the chrome. Masking it up is very annoying, especially since the corners are rounded, but it has to be done lol..

I didn't use any primer for this, seeing as the grey part is paint, i reckon that just sanding it back a bit to rough up the surface to give the paint something to stick to would be sufficient. All i did was sanded the grey painted part with 400 grit, then sprayed a couple of coats of colour on until i got a close enough match, followed by a couple of coats of clear with a quick wet sand using 1200 grit in between coats. It turned out pretty decent :)

Looks good, nice work. I have been thinking about doing my grille.

I'm still not sure if the chrome tape would look any good on mine though.

the lighter the colour of the car is, the better chrome highlights look in my opinion, white car+chrome= winner!!

Oh, and KWIKXR the mont is looking great, im liking the EL grill on yours, get some Ghia turning lamps, i'll try do a chop to help ya decide... and the twin tips look tough, dont ditch them!!

Im missing my EF only been gone for a couple weeks lol.... 2moro i might be buying an AUII Mont Ghia though

Thanks guys, I'm fairly happy with it at the moment. I'm starting to get used to the EL grill up front now, it's grown on me already

SLO247 - I'd definitely go for the chrome striping/tape on bumper moulds, chrome goes surprisingly well on white cars and makes them look very classy. Like FF said, white car+chrome=winner!! :P

FF - I think turning lamps would go well on the Mont, unfortunately they are quite hard to come by around here. Would love a set not only because they look good but would help drastically at night time while driving, we all know how s**t the headlights are on these cars

The twin tips will stay, i love the look, much much better than the oval i had before. If only i could get them to not make that weird sound... I think the way the tips are welded inside the collector is affecting the sound when the air passes through it. It definitely sounds deeper than what it was with the oval on, but sounds very "hollow" when i stab the throttle or when I'm giving it heaps, i'm hoping a s**t load of carbon will build up in the tip and quieten the bastard down

Mate, i don't know how you managed to part with your EF, it would have been bloody hard letting it go to the new owner. Hopefully they look after her aye. Sounds like you have already got your sights on something else lol...this Ghia sounds nice, is it a 6 or an 8? :P

FordFairmont-I might try it. What size tape was it again? AU Ghia FTW. Do it.

KWIKXR-What size tape did YOU use? With the headlights, try playing with the adjustment. Do you have genuine lights? I fitted mint genuine ones ($30!) and they work great.

I used 12mm thick chrome tape. Repco stocks it, it's called Pinstripe tape, brand is SAAS

Yep, still running genuine lights. I think i'll give that a try with the adjustments, maybe aim them a little lower and go from there. Might even have to try better bulbs or something, the lenses could also do with a very good polish.

Theres a Repco up the road. I'll have a look. :D

I'd get new lights if I were you, I polished mine but they slowly went s**t again. I noticed a big difference when I aimed mine down a bit too, definitely try that. I'm still running normal globes too.

Yeah agree about the turning lamps, but they are very hard to find and can be extremely expensive too!

FF - you should pop into my build thread and chop my car haha! Would like to see how my car looks with the turn lamps, EL grille and number plate surround!

Also, that AU does look mint!

Did they get the XR6 tickford engine?

Cheers.

Man, that AU Mont does look to be in very good condition. Low km's, leather and woodgrain interior, nice paint colour, plus the chrome items being a Fairmont - sounds like a winner :P

Hey KWIK, one question.

Got my EL grille a couple of days ago - wondering how did you remove the black fins and get them back in? There appears to be plastic tabs holding them in that look like they would snap if taken off.

On a side note - i scrubbed mine up with some autosol, came out looking fantastic.

Nice!! Should look good on your EF mate:wink:

With my EL grill, i noticed that it had been repainted at some stage and the fins must have been removed and refitted in the process. The fins were just stuck back on with a heap of black Sikaflex (black windscreen sealant, really strong adhesive s**t), probably because who ever removed it in the first place broke the tabs off, which sounds like it would be the only way to do it.

I would just break off the tabs holding them in place, and when you refit them, just use some sort of strong adhesive glue to hold them back in place. When you take the fins out, you will see where the fins sit up against the backing where the tabs hold it in place, i just smeared contact adhesive on those areas, pushed the fins back into position and held it there till the adhesive dried. Once it dries it won't move. I'm hoping they will be easy enough to take out again as i have some mesh lined up for it already

Great! Thanks mate. I didn't really see an easy way out, but thought i may have missed something.

I too went mesh shopping last night - only had them in huge sheets that were around $50 each.

Might try ebay. Where'd you get yours?

Cheers.

Got mine from NZ's version of Ebay, "Trade Me". Ordered a $15, 400mm x 280mm cut which should be just enough to do the EL grill. It was the only way i could get it cut to size without spending $50-$60 for a big sheet which would be a waste.
