Debating what I'll do with my sub, ideally I want to build it into the passenger side rear of wagon but we'll see how it goes. Cheers! Heaps of space in the back of the wagon for a few subs . Would be quite cool to see some sort of fibreglassed enclosure. {USERNAME} wrote: Fukkkkiiiin hell Nath, lookin good mate keep it up. Can't wait to see the subs in Cheers dude. Hopefully it'll be all in tonight so I can start breaking it in. I hooked the sub up yesterday free-air style and it's alive, seems to move fairly well at low gain, should pound a lot better in an enclosure {USERNAME} wrote: Impressive mate. Has it dropped the rear of the car yet? Cheers Slo. The rear doesn't look much lower at the moment without the sub and box in. Maybe a few mm lower but nothing too noticeable. The sub and box combined will add probably 25-30kg's extra - it's a big fkn sub (12.5kg) and the box is all 18mm MDF and thats a heavy bastard too . I reckon if I chuck superlows in the rear it could possibly just start tucking tyres in the rear. Hopefully it'll drop a little lower by the end of the night once everything is in, I'd like to get the rear guards about .5"-1" above the tyres. |

Got sub and amp in mine, on superlow dobis, on standard 15's tires are tucked in rear guard, not to over the top just enough to look slammed lol

Will be putting in dobi supers all round sometime in the future anyway so thats good to hear
Box has been finished, sub is in and all wired up. Enclosure is sealed for now as I still need to work out the required port dia. and length. The port Pioneer recommend would be tuned to a higher frequency than I would have liked, but might give it a go and see how it sounds. The sub seems to go quite well though. It's sitting on about 1/4 gain right now, just to slowly break it in. Sounds much better at lower volumes than any of the other sub's I've had in the car before. Haven't carpeted the box yet and still need to make up some fill-in panels either side of the sub box to make the back seem like a flat wall. Will get a shot of the bogan spec box soon lol.. Blurry as picture, but you get the idea. A panel will be made either side of the box to hide the wall retaining brackets and all the cabling and s**t. I think my camera is a little fuxored right now, can't get the bugger to focus at all
Still need to tidy up the wiring under the parcel shelf too, wires every which way you look right now |

Finally I can say the boot install is complete!!
After listening to the sub for a day or so in the sealed enclosure I decided (well, pretty much knew from the start) I couldn't live with it. Some songs it sounded okay, others it would sound like a terribly designed ported box. It wasn't hitting the bass notes too well at all and at times would often seem like the deep notes were delayed. Probably can't blame it for acting that way considering it was in a 2cu ft box and Pioneer recommended around 1cu ft max lol. Anyways, sorted that out yesterday after work by making up a round port to fit to the box. Sat down at the computer for an hour or so, going through a few box designing programs and finally settled for a website (http://www.bcae1.com/spboxnew2.htm) which can calculate port specs tuned at a specific hz range, based on the box dimensions, woofer displacement and the desired port diameter and quantity. Found out that the woofer displacement was actually only 0.181cu ft and not the 0.4cu ft that I read on a car audio forum, which probably would have stuffed up with the port diameter a bit being almost 0.2cu ft difference, so thank f**k for that!! Basically it said I had a 1.8cu ft box after woofer displacement, and needed a 3" dia x 6.1" long round port to tune it to 35hz. Went into the shed, grabbed out some 3" pvc drain pipe and cut it to size, then heated it up and flared the end to help prevent port noise, also sprayed it black to match. Removed the sub, cut a 3" hole to the left of its mounting position, carpeted the box and popped the sub and the port in... The difference is night and day. Hits the bass notes very hard and accurate now, and absolutely pounds!! I had to set the gain at just a touch before half way or else I can't hear the fronts - time for a front stage and amp upgrade me thinks . The 6" coaxials I have in the rear shelf start to distort when it hits the heavy bass lines, so I need to see what I can do to fix that. The sub should more of less be run-in now too, got a fairly good workout today thanks to a mate at work who had a pretty good Young Jeezy mixed cd hahaha. Got home today and wired up the distro block display ground so now it works lol. Also made up the fill-in panels, carpeted them and slotted them in. Doneski's!! |

Looks brilliant mate. Thats how I imagined mine to be, when I did a few sketches. Haven't bothered to do anything yet though.
Good to hear you are happy with it. Its hard to get them to sound right, I still haven't managed to get mine to sound half-decent. Plenty of bass, thats not the problem. Its just all in the wrong places! Whats next on the agenda? |

Cheers man! I'm stoked with how it turned out, especially considering how the boot's look in standard form with the uneven floor, big humped section behind the rear seats/over the diff.. all over the place really. I still have to play around with the LPF and subsonic filter settings and see if I can better the sound to suit the music I listen to, but need to do it somewhere where the neighbours won't cop full force of the vibrations . For now, it goes just fine
At the moment I'm planning to let the bank account recover a bit haha. I've spent a bit more than what I had set out to spend in the beginning and really need to start saving up some money as I might be heading over to Sydney for a week at the end of year. With regards to what's next with the car, I want to get the engine running right first, the rich mixture issue I think is most likely due to a buggered, out of range sensor. This weekend I'll get around to testing as many sensors as possible and start ruling things out. I also want to get the intake piping sorted for good so I can get rid of all the excess silicon joiners lol. Have to cut up those alloy bends I have in the garage then take them somewhere to get TIG'd up so that might be a job for the weekend. Once it's all running good again, I'd like to get it back on the dyno for another AFR readout so I can get a J3 done. Turbo stuff will have to wait till I have another car to use as a daily. I also want to get the windscreen replaced at some stage and possibly get the windows tinted too.. as funds allow |

That looks tops, and as you say from factory the floor is all over the place. the gap where you put the sub is pretty much unusal able, i think it was made for a sub install lol.
The way you have done it it's not over the top and stall have plenty of room. when i get around to mine i'll do something similar but have the amps flush. it sucks when you have all these things you want to do to it, but the bank account has a different idea lol |

Hahaha cheers Troy. Yeah man, still heaps of space with this install, I was worried I was gonna take up too much space but it worked out alright. Heaps of room left for a big chilly-bin when needed too

Cheers Mason, hahaha, sometimes I have very little to no motivation to doing anything - evident by the amount of time (couple of months easily!) it took me to actually get back to doing the install after first starting the floor. It seems if you do something that gets you in the right direction, you end up with too much motivation and just keep going. Well thats what happened with me lol, was pretty much downhill from the time I got stuck back into it all.
I'd actually be game to do another.... well maybe, lol. First install I've ever done, and luckily it turned out pretty good. It's good fun making s**t, even better when things turn out exactly as you want them or close to it. I'd definitely need to invest in some better tools for doing jobs like this though, e.g. a decent sized table saw would be awesome!! Using a cheap a** $20 jigsaw to cut 18mm board FTL. I'd also need to buy a KF laser 2 door hatch, these things are heaven sent when it comes to transporting big off cuts of MDF from Bunnings/Mitre 10 to home - thanks mum for letting me borrow yours |
