Lol man i really do need to see this Futurlane....it sounds...intriguing.

How rattly is rattly though? you can hear this a bit inside the car, but outside sounds like the LTD has tank tracks or something

Tank tracks in neutral? Just how loud are the tank tracks?! Mine rattles and whines and sounds like an old uncared for light truck... Tank tracks are like a serious noise I would guess. What happens when you put your foot on the clutch?

I know you would have put 2L or more of oil in... You're not a silly sausage.

Troyman i put in two 1L containers of oil, so 2L. when i stuck a metal rod in to test oil level, it was barely below the filler hole.

Fiend, these are loud tank tranks.

Noise is still there when i push the clutch in, it starts going away when i put it into first, then fully goes away when i push it hard in first. I can't quite describe the noise, i will get a recording when i get the chance.

Yes, definitely put the spigot bearing in. When the box was out and it first arrived on the crate, when turning the input shaft it did have a rattle to it...but not much, thought it was either normal or would go away once in the car. But obviously neither lol....

How easy is it to change the input shaft bearing/how expensive? My dad is a mechanic so would obviously do it for me with some guidance, as he's not a gearbox guru.

I was afraid something like this would happen, at least the car is running u suppose! I may run out now and get a recording much to the neighbors annoyance. can i upload sounds on the forums or what?

No have not driven it, it doesn't sound healthy at all though. Dad reckons it sounds like something has collapsed in there. It shifts into all the gears but is quite hard to get into fourth and doesn't always shift into 4th the first try, have to clutch in/out a few times first. And i think Reverse was hard to get to as well. Not too keen to test drive it as i don't want to totally stuff it. I'm trying to find my vid camera so you can hear it, i will PM you the file.

You can upload a video straight from your phone (in 3GP format or similar) to PHOTOBUCKET and / or U-TUBE. They will convert it into MPG and into a FLASH PLAYER format that is readily available to all who use the web.

Simply record a video on your phone and upload it and follow the prompts. When it's all loading you can provide a link to it by either copying and pasting the link from the address bar, or copying the code presented to you by the Photobucket (or other service) page.

---

You know how good I am with mechanics right? Bloody hopeless, but constantly learning... Usually learning the hard way, admittedly, but learning nonetheless...

I pulled the front input shaft out of my T5 as it was moving around (rattling one would say) and replaced a couple of shims and bearings whilst replacing the metal bit that sticks out the front that the clutch throwout bearing goes around (the front bearing retainer is it is technically known).

You should order a couple of shims (I got a fat one and a skinny one and the box had a skinny one in already) and new input bearings. I remember the bit on the input shaft as being VERY hard to get off, but it does come off in the end... Mind your knuckles with the big heavy metal things you're going to be requiring........
Anyways - Since it is AU T5 you'd be needing a World Class input bearing set and some shims, along with an accurate caliper or two.

Every time I measured mine for the shims insertion I came up with a slightly different answer. All were within the thinest shim I had anyway, so ended up using all the shims, which stopped any play whatsoever in the input shaft. And, having pulled it out again on Saturday, I can safely say that there is still no movement that shouldn't be and that my boxes problems come from further back in the piece.......

Did you try putting a magnet on a stick all around the sump and see what you fished up? I hope it's just the input shaft slacking about mate, but (like me) you're on a bit of learning curve now huh? Pulling apart a T5 is not hard. You can then see what's wrong with it... Putting it back together properly can be an issue... I should have a whole heap of PDF's and the like on this computer that give the jist of it. DON'T just put it back together how you pulled it apart mate --- Read the guff on proper shim amounts and all that rubbish and do it half properly!

http://www.thegearbox.org/T5.html --- You can ask him for the exact bits you think you need and he'll help you out, or try MAL WOOD AUTO in Aussieland.... Both of these companies were very very helpful with my dog box.

Yeah man, a learning curve alright. would have been quite happy not to be though. At least it's not as big a curve as yours!! although you seem to have a s**t load more motivation tools and know how than i do lol.

That site looks good, pretty cheap too! hopefully i will onlly need the $130 kit, but i can tell it won't be that simple, never is.

Here is the link,

Sorry about the quality, the original file was 65mb and for some reason i couldn't convert it or make it smaller so i videoed it off the pc screen on my phone.

s**t i haven't used photobucket in ages, still has my old wagon in there!

now thats a big noise.. its more like a clunk, clunk, clunk than a rattle..
does it still make the noise if you shift through the other gears with your foot on the clutch..
or only in neutral ???
