From memory the davies craig set-up is only $60 or so from Supercheap. Do you have them over there? They do at times leak but more often not. All depends on how you do it. Do it right and you wont have any issues.

Get your mate to have a look at the seat and see what he thinks. You'd be paying a lot more for hem over here! Can your mate do the wheel too?

I'm after the XR speedo to match the rest of the car. But thanks for the offer mate! Trying to get my thing to be as close to XR as possible.

Ah really!! Oh that changes it then, s**t, i must have been looking at the wrong place, i remember looking on some website and a kit was something like $190 AU. Yep, we sure do have super cheap stores here, I'll have to call in and see if they have one! Ripper!

I may get the seats even as a shed filler until a time when i can be bothered fitting them, i mean $200 is nothing for a set of leather seats. And yes, my mate can do the wheel which is awesome, he does all sorts of stuff, has been an upholsterer for many moons, hes my old mans freind but i'll claim him as mine too :P he made my custom gear boot surround for me, $100 for black leather, all stitched etc, looks way better than in the photo's.

No worries man, i have found another couple of AU's i have asked about the cluster for you, i'm still waiting on replies from them.

Let us know how you go with supercheap. I could be wrong but pretty sure thats what I paid for mine.

Thanks again mate for searching around for me, really appreciate it! Its seems it cheaper to post from NZ than interstate in Aus. My wife has a kiwi friend and she said she's been buying heaps of stuff from trademe and sending it over.

I'll go check out supercheap this weekend, see what i can find.

Not a problem man, i spend most of my life browsing trademe/ebay anyway lol. It's ridiculously cheap to post to Aus, i sent an entire explorer manifold, MAF and TB conversion over for $150, and i sent an AU fuel rail to DC Straight for, i think it was, $20.. They go by weight not size, they don't even measure it when you take the stuff in, chuck it on the scales ,they punch the weight into the pc, print out a price and it's done. Aus post is a rip off and takes for ever, i bought a collectable figure a few months back, weighs about 400 grams if your lucky, parcel size was like 25cm x 25cm x 10cm, took over a week and a half and cost me $AU35! You aussies seem to get ripped everywhere, *car parts, *postage price for the car parts lol

I have been running the Davies Craig thermo switch setup for a couple of years. To ensure it doesn't leak I use a thin smear of silicon inside the hose end where the probe goes in.

I made up my own loom and relay set, and it works great.

Cheers
BenJ

Cheers BenJ, do you have any pics in that labyrinth of a build thread? Just about need a few days to read to page 1001 lol.

I stopped in at super cheap today, a kit including all the relays and wiring etc is $99. Not bad i suppose, the switch itself without all the other crap is $65.

Also, a few of my goodies arrived today, i got my $900 gear sets and also my new $40 engine cover   . Couldn't beleive how cheap i got this for.

Have attached some pics of the old vs new gears, and also the cover. i will need to get a new decal/badge made up for the cover, as the original tickford one is missing, does anyone know if the metal badges, the ones that go on the front guards, fit this space?

My plans for the engine cover is to paint it up in Cardinal Red (same colour as car), paint the tickford lettering grey, leave the area surrounding the tickford badge at front grey and replace the "XR8" logo with an "LTD" logo.

I also severely broke the bank and bought a DU LTD leather/woodgrain steering wheel complete with airbag and cruise switches. The leather needs re dyed which i will have re done, then it will be up for sale. so if anyone knows anyone that wants a nice re-coed LTD wheel, let me know :P

Just slightly lol! Heres a shot of the wheel, before it gets a much needed makeover!

Mate how did you find that engine cover for that price!! Thats a bloody bargain to me considering how much ive seen people want for them. Good score. As for that LTD wheel, i think i may know someone who wants it, ME .. unfortunately im as broke as a joke, seems every week im finding new ways to break my bank lol. Still cant help but think what that wheel sprayed in black would look like in my car, those wheels are pure sex.

Good to see you got the gears, hope to see the t5 up and running nicely soon

Lol tell me about it mate! Every week is a struggle for my bank account, i don't think i have had a positive balance for over a year. Add that to the two credit cards, GE, and a student loan.

But hey, at the moment i'm only getting the leather re-coloured, i could always have it reupholstered in black...... 8-)

I'm stoked about the cover!! i watched one go on ebay last week for $275 LOL

Thanks Joshie, Well mate, I'm as broke as broke can be. Being on a student loan means i can't work more than 20 hours a week, couple that with the constant crap i buy on eBay = no money.

I'm still needing $330 to get the rebuild kit (bearings etc) from the US, once that arrives, dad will spend an afternoon putting it together. Then all thats left to do is put it back in the car and turn it on. So hopefully not too long away now, all thats standing in my way is money.

Well, i have ordered my rebuild kit so that will be here in a week or so time.

Also i picked up a mega score today, a pair of BA Wagon skirts (same as yours Fiend) for $120!!!

Just got to find a cheap freight company to get them here now. I'll have to get the low down from you Tony, on how to install them. Was it easy enough to do?

Very easy really... I did write a tech doco on it, but it just went something like this --

1)
HOLD UP SIDESKIRTS AND SCRIBE TO MATCH EXISTING BODYWORK
2)
JIGSAW WITH MEDIUM a*** BLADE TO SUIT
3)
HOLD UP SIDESKIRT AND ADJUST TO POSITION, MARK WHERE THE HOLES IN THE BODY FOR *YOUR* ORIGINAL RUBBER SEAL STRIPS POKE THROUGH THE SILL.
-- This bit may be a problem if your car doesn't have the rubber strips attached to the sill... You have to remove these (they're held on by clips that get pushed into holes in the metal sill)
4)
TAKE A SHARP DRILL BIT, AN ELECTRIC DRILL AND DRILL HOLES... ELONGATE THE HOLES SIMPLY BY PUSHING THE DRILL THROUGH THE PLASTIC SIDEWAYS (or use the Jigsaw if you can be a*** reaching down and picking up your jigsaw again --- I couldn't be bothered, I just pushed the electric drill sideways through the forgiving plastic...)
5)
HOLD IN POSITION, CLIMB UNDER CAR and SEE WHERE YOU CAN DRILL BIG a*** HOLES TO ACCOMMODATE THE ADDITIONAL LUGS (not 100% required to be honest!)
6)
HOLD SILL IN POSITION and PUSH THE BIT OF RUBBER WITH IT'S POKEY OUTEY BITS INTO THE SILLS HOLEY BITS.

Image
Image

Top picture shows the BA wagon plastic sill cover / sideskirt and how it originally fitted on the back of the old EF / EL system. The EB and ED are ever so slightly different I think --- That black rubber strip is missing (as seen in third picture) which I used to hold the sills on.

The advice was that the BA rubber bits would fit - They don't. They are too short by about an inch at each end... Which is very obvious at the rear door, dogleg portion so decided to use the EF's original rubber strip. This required making extra holes in the plastic, but there was already modifying going on since I had to take the jigsaw out and remove a wedge section from rear and make the square cutout at front larger...
AND aren't you just the clever bugger? Always getting a good deal... How much is freight, and where are you getting them from? Who's got a BA wagon? I might want some bits...
