YAYAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! That's the story, well done...

When doing my input shaft I did all the calculations about ten times and then averaged the results out to come up with the shim thickness required. There was one calculation of the ten attempts that was miles out, but the other 9 were within coo-ey and three were identical (which happened to be right in the middle of the average...)

I may be exaggerating ever so slightly, but you get the picture. Thankfully when the guy in the states was asking me what shims I needed I just said a fat one and a skinny one! Worked out perfect when combined with shims already installed.
:D

Is that cover paint the same as the Tickford paint on the EF / EL six rocker covers?
It's a b**ch to photograph correctly using cheap digitals alright...!

Good work.

When you did your input shim, what did you shim it to? I know i need to shim it back to zero, but do i need to preload it like the cluster? EG "end play + shim = ZERO, then add shim to get 0.0**mm of preload"? My cluster is perfectly preloaded, it feels quite firm though.... Calculations are right though so it must be ok.

I installed a new billet bearing retainer instead of the s**t pressed steel factory one too. All the blocking rings have carbon fibre instead of pressed paper, twin brass synchros on 5th/reverse and pocket bearings all round including input shaft, should be a good box to drive with!!

The paint is from super cheap, it's that touch up paint stuff you can buy in a spray can rather than a brush pot. Then it has layers of clear coat on top. Very hard to photograph properly with a phone, i was considering cranking out the DSLR but then the pictures come out at about 6mb and i cbf resizing them. You get the idea by looking at that picture anyway!

That cover looks f**k mint!! The plate should go well with that i reckon. The whole cardinal red with the silver insert for the ticky badge looks great IMO, much better than the silver (IIRC?) it usually comes out in from factory

Thanks mate, i think she looks tops! I love the silver/cardinal red combo too, should look even sweeter when mounted up next to the silver explorer intake.

I was going to do the thermo fan swap soon, but my eye has caught something else i want first, an MSD slight upgrade, a new MSD cap and rotor for the dizzy and an MSD blaster coil, $NZ210 delivered, not bad i thought! My coil is rooted, the tip is only there by mm's and the rotor in the dizzy is chipped and worn, when i got the car 3 years(?) ago it still had the standard motorcraft leads etc on so i'm guessing none of the ignition has ever been touched since 1993.

Happy to see your T5 is just about ready to go back in :) Once its in and running, you will have to laugh at the whole situation id say. Terrible thing to go through, but you managed to sort it out after much frustration.

Cheers

Yeah i'm already laughing, laughing through disbelief at how long it's taken lol. I'm just hoping the ECU is ok as it came from the same guy as the Gbox did.......

The amount of money i have spent on just putting this gearbox in, has made me pass the stage of caring, and now i'm just happy to finally being able to drive the damned thing.

That is a bloody good price i reckon, i hate to think what kind of prices some of the speeds shops over here would charge for the same items. You buying from Oz or straight out of the US? Have found a lot of V8 parts are cheap as chips out of the US, places like Summit and Atlantic Speed, etc.

With the thermo fan swap, do you need the thermo's straight out of a ef/el v8 model or will the 6 cyl thermo's work? Reason i ask is because there is a guy on Trade me wrecking out a 5.0 Lane (NF i think by the looks of it, but he has it advertised as a Fairmont Ghia lol), dunno if you have seen it yet. His prices seem reasonable so you may be able to get them cheap.. But with the price of that MSD gear, i'd be inclined to snap that up first and leave the thermo's for later

all EF and EL thermos are the same apart from the plugs. AU ones are smaller in size but can be made to fit

Yeah mate the MSD stuff is from Summit, was hoping it would be cheaper but they charge $us50 for postage

I saw that "fairmont ghia" lol, man the guy obviously can't have much of a clue, the car bloody says fairlane all over it!! He has offered me the fans for $60, but i have had a guy offer me a set for $30 so i'm waiting on a reply from him, the expensive part is getting the switch kit from supercreep ($100). I was considering leaving the thermos for later as i really do need the new dizzy stuff, but also i need to pay two sets of rego before i can drive this thing (12 months as i never put it on hold, plus the new 6 months rego so about $350 of rego to pay  )

No i don't mate, have been trying to find a cheap set with no cracks and the warning stickers still attached. Have found a couple for $45-$60, but then they charge silly postage prices. One guy emailed me yesterday offering me a set for $30 plus post (from up north island) but haven't heard back yet.

Is that for the full wiring and switch kit? Supercheap in town sell them for $99.95 exactly (nz dollars). Whats the going rate in Aussie? I'll see if i can find some in the sales forum.

My new ticky badges turned up yesterday too ($36 off ebay) look ok, very plastic but look 100% like the original badges. Plan to have them mounted below my BF V8 badges on the guards.

Oh and i need some T5 rebuild advice, i posted a question in the tranny forum, but no replies yet. I need to know what peoples clusters felt like when hand turning after shimming them? Mine is shimmed correctly, but firm to turn by hand. Any less firm and it wouldn't be preloaded. I just want to make sure before i stick the mainshaft in and bolt it all up.

No worries. Those prices are heaps cheaper then what they sell for over here. I was going to say I have a set and would help you out, but at those prices your much better off. I would expect 70-80 on average for over here.

All good man!

See Ash, I'm tellin' ya mate, kiwi's haven't got a clue what Falcon parts are worth in Oz! Cheers anyway mate, much appreciated.

No worries mate, a $30 set would do you very nicely :D

Keen to move in on a business venture?

Another cheap item which has me pulling my hair out, is there is an LTD identical to mine that i could have for $3000, it has straight panels, GT40 tubular intake, pacemakers and mint interior. I'm very tempted to grab it, but that would mean going to the bank and adding another $4200 onto my current loan, as i would have to pay Jeff's haulage $1200 to get it here. Very tempting though as i could keep the goodies and sell the engine minus the GT40 and pacies.....

Very possibly, I'm hoping to have a lot of space on my hands soon so anything may be possible. Could make something out of this

$1200? Where is it coming from?

Up north, i paid $1100 to get my current ltd trucked down from there too. The main reason i want it is for parts if i ever need anything such as panels or interior. I'm scared to touch my car in case something breaks, i haven't found or seen another DC ltd V8 here in NZ. There's bound to be a few kicking around but as far as parts go, Nil. Plus it's the same colour.

Yeee Hawww partners! The box is in and running, took it for a quick spin around the block, goes good like it should. Was a wee bit hard to get into gears but that was down the clutch issues, shifts fine now. Just have to Time the beast and get a WOF and Rego and were sorted for the next mods!

I can't beleive how good the car sounds and goes, it changes the whole thing completely, the sound, the feel, the go!

Really glad to hear you got it back on the road Mason.
Sucks that it took so long and cost so much more then it was originally meant to but I reckon it would be all worthwhile now.
