I've also just bought myself some v8 gear. 2 EB xr8's to fix up. One's fairly easy fix, other is harder, my g/f is getting one, the other i might keep, man, it has a wicked sound to it! They are also BOTH 5 speed manuals! I currently have 3 5 speed EB's in my driveway. 2 xr8's, 1 Ghia 6cyl

I better get back to working on them.

Cheers

So you were the one that got them.  I was watching them online. I was keen on the red one but I would have had to ship it up here so it went for a bit more then I was willing to pay. It did look good though an it was on LPG too yeah? I think I could just make out the LPG stickers on the plates in the photo's.

Yep. Paid probably about $400 too much for each but they were still worth the money at the price i paid, my g/f wanted the red one, white one was for parts but it's too easy to fix so it's getting fixed, i have it running, drivable (without power steer atm), just need to fix the firewall & bolt the front clip on. Maybe next week it will be off for a RWC check to see what it needs, once i sort the steering rack out.

Red Xr8 -> It's LPG, straight Impco LPG. Not an easy repair but worthwhile. Has an impco 425 sitting on a weiand (sp?) intake manifold, all petrol injection gear removed. K&N filter, mallroy 6AL ignition module, thermo fan conversion, they were broken but it's easy for me to replace them. Has pacemaker extractors & i think a HD clutch by how heavy it is. It was pretty good value. It's LPG is also in date, white one's tank is out of date, but i've got a "spare" in date tank that's a bolt in replacement in the shed, so i'm set for that. :D

Cheers

And now it is truly time for TORANA GUY to start his own bloggish thread... It was probably time some months ago, but it is now time. Can XR-LANE or TROYMAN please ban him from every thread until such time as all his posts regarding this from the last three weeks have been copied in chronologically compliant order in his own thread...

THREAD POLICE ALERT.

Nah, I'm big on talking crap everywhere. True.

I give a s**t. False.

I'd like to see more of Torana Guys antics. True.

I'd like to see this s**t develop. True.

A lot like your own stuff Ash... This Torana lover seems to find some wheels and deals (deals on wheels at that) and would be good way we could stop into his space and have a kick of the tyres...

Sorry Fiend, I didn't help to that. Same to you Mason. Back to you though.

How did the MSD gear go? Did you take it for a run?

No worries mate, i got no problem with chitter chatter, it's what a thread is for right!?

MSD gear makes it go a lot better, appears to have improved the fuel problem too. Coolant sensor hasn't changed a thing, still sits at the same spot on the gauge, i'm thinking that maybe it's normal to be sitting there.... Have hooked up my VAC gauge too, quite a neat wee thing, getting about 21 iN Hg at idle.

I bought the headers, getting them the week of the 14th Feb, hopefully have enough cash to get the full system made up too, i'm liking the idea of Micks system, although i must ask him what brand hot dogs he used and how "droney" does it get on the highway. The exhaust is my number one priority.

Number two is the mirror mod, i have the EF mirrors sitting here, i just need to get motivated and drill some holes in my doors, i drilled one side but the holes were out by a few mm, so i will have to touch those up.

Number three is the thermo fan mod and then some Under drive pulleys. Money money money.....

The clutch is still bugging me though, when the car is off, the gear stick slides through the gears like butter, when running, the clutch must still be catching a bit and the main shaft in the box must still be slightly spinning as you can feel it just nick the synchros changing up/down into 2nd and 3rd, reverse is getting much easier though, almost like shifting into 1st gear. Clutch is adjusted right out too, so maybe the clutch plate is slightly too thick, need to do some burnouts to wear it down a little

LOLZ man! You make me laugh. Yeah i probably should have a build thread, but i'm back n forth between all my car's, so i should probably just call it - "ToranaGuys Build thread - no particular car" lol.

Yeah i do find some decent deals at times. If you guys were over this way i'd say pop on down & we will have a bbq & yak about our cars. Anyway, i've had a s**t night & morning, i needed a good laugh. Now to go off & start a garage thread/blog.

LOL at the THREAD POLICE ALERT. I thought you were the worst culprit fiend hehehe

Hey XFWAGON, I've been putting off that MSD upgrade since 2004 for my car. After seeing your photos, I think it's time to do mine finally..

Also, you will find that if an exhaust drones on a car fitted with an automatic, this doesn't always happen if the identical exhaust is fitted to a manual car. I know I got a little drone on my old redback system when I initially had an auto but when I swapped the auto for a manual, the drone mostly went. You can blame the torque converter and the auto's gearing. You shouldn't have a problem with the hot dog exhaust on your LWB as far as drone is concerned although you could get a couple of cheap straight through glass packed mufflers and save a bit also.

I can definately put up a hand of support for the MSD gear. All 3 of our V8's have it.

Definitely go for the MSD stuff, looks great and makes the car run much smoother. And for the small amount of money + amount of time to install, you would have to be mentally retarded not to do it!

I have also been thinking about the muffler scenario, the hot dogs seem like a good idea, BUT, will they give me enough back pressure? And they also cost a fair bob. So i'm thinking a 2 chamber race muffler on each pipe would be sufficient.... thoughts?

Another interesting point i forgot to add, while hooking up my Vac gauge, i hooked it up to the cruise control vac line under the dash..... no reading on the gauge. I then hooked it up to a line coming off the manifold, instant 20 hg! So that got me thinking, when i did the explorer install, i plugged the Fuel reg vac line into this same vac line that feeds the one under the dash, this could be compromising my fuel seeing it has no vac reading. So today i swapped it to another vac line, another one running parallel to the first one, but this one is going to my manifold so should have vac in that. What ya's reckon? I will upload some pics to show you what i mean later tonight.

Fuel reg will need to see manifold pressure, otherwise it would do weird things to your fuel flow/pressure if it's working properly & not getting manifold pressure.

Nice to read the MSD gear was worthwhile.

You sure the gear issue isn't the spigot bearing? I've played with the clutch in my EB a lot, and without removing it i believe why it's hard to shift gear's is due to the spigot bearing. I've got a full clutch kit, HD, ready to go in. I have finally picked up the welsh plugs so i can change them while i'm there. I won't bother with the rear main, it's not leaking atm, and i changed it only 3 years ago, i'll do it next time i change the clutch. I also bought a clutch alignment tool to make the job so much quicker & easier. Gotta get that job done soon.....

Cheers

I thought that, could have been why i could literally see the fuel needle moving constantly. I took the car to town last night after fixing the fuel reg vac, and bugger me, what a difference, i clocked up 75k driving around and the needle has only moved ever so slightly, must have been doing all sorts of crazy s**t with no vacuum running to it.

Picked up a Davies Craig switch kit yesterday as well, ready for the thermos next week. Christ, it better be worth it, cost me $100 for the switch kit, and $75 for the fans (posted).

What could be wrong with the spigot bearing? It was brand new, but i could imagine it getting knocked about when putting the gearbox in, especially as the input shaft is abusing the hole like a whore when trying to get the box into place.

What are these "welsh" plugs you speak of? :? Clutch tool will make your job much quicker, i watched the old man when he was putting my clutch in, and the alignment tool made it look simple.

Sounds like a huge improvement in economy, good work dude!

I was thinking the spigot might not be sitting right in relation to the input shaft. I know my spigot is worn out, after many kms of hard driving lol.

6cyl block has 2 welsh plugs that hide up the back that i need to do when the gearbox is out.

Cheers

Do ya reckon it could be tilted slightly so the input isn't sitting straight and is slightly engaging the cluster? May have been a bit too rough during the install.

(( Welsh plugs = Frost plugs ))

Did you want those EF Monty weather strips sent down Mason?! Sorry I bummed out on the thermo fan side of things for you. A lot of people must have worked out they are useful recently. Last set I had sold in five minutes, but a couple of years ago I had some sitting on trade me for months.

It's a bit strange but i've had it happen in my torry last time i did the clutch. I was a bit rough sliding the gearbox in as i didn't have a clutch alignment tool then, so i had the pressure plate a tad loose, slide the gearbox in & wiggle it to line it up, then do up the pressure plate. I knocked the spigot slightly & had to pull it apart again to get it right....

Cheers

Well, it's been a while since a post was made.

Have been flat out with Uni and other stuff, plus it's been raining and s**t here for god knows how long.

On the plus side of things, I have recently converted the LTD to Thermo fans and finished the EL mirror mod. My underdrive pulleys arrived from BOI today so will be off to get machined on Monday, they are polished billet, but i think they look boring so then a coat of anodized Blue paint will be coming their way.

Also will be lowering the car in the next few weeks, the Lows were ok, but it needs to go lower  so a set of Cobra Superlows and Monroe shocks are going in. Cobra are made here in NZ so are good bang for the buck, and they are also meant to be a lot stiffer than kingsprings.

Finally hooked up my gauges, Vac gauge is great, really informative and helps with the fuel consumption side of things, tend to lay off the pedal more now when i look down and see the needle sitting on 5 In/Hg lol. 02 sensor has been wired up to the ECU i'm yet to try that gauge out, although from what i've heard, it's not going to be too informative on a narrow band sensor.

Just waiting on the rain to stop so i can put my headers on, bought new 02 sensors for them and while putting them on a week or so ago, noticed my engine mounts were shot, so had to order some in from Oz, was going to be $520 from a shop just for the mounts, good thing i have contacts at Repco/Appco and managed to get them for $250 pair 8-) 8-) 8-) .

It's been raining for about 6 days now, my little town is flooding and there is water everywhere, so as soon as it stops pouring, all this stuff can be finished and hit the road for a test run!
