George and I changed the front springs and shocks today. Long story cut short, it now looks like the front sits a bit higher than before. I'm assured the springs I was given were the correct ones, though so I'm not blaming Ash. Now just gotta find some AU XR front springs. On the up side, the shock absorbers are better than what were there, evidently, so wasn't a total waste of 7 hours. LOL

Did you take it for a drive Cam? Did it settle at all? I wonder if the distance between the shock tower and the control arm is shorter on the ED than it is on the AU.

Am about to try now. Will let you know.

Did anyone measure the total length of the AU strut and compare to the E series strut?

The strut is the same length and, the spring appeared to be the same length as well. I guess I should have checked it better before adding it but, I didn't. Will be looking into this as I know Ash would not give us the wrong gear so I will try and find out some more info. :)

Isn't the AU heavier? And therefore the spring rate would be stiffer for the same given length. I think that some shorter springs will fix it right up.

You are actually one of the first to try using the AU struts and springs in an E Series, so I am not surprised that the results are not exactly as expected.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers
BenJ

Did it settle after a drive at all George? Its a long way though. At the height in the pic it looks as if the engine has been removed.

No Ash, it stayed the same height as in the pic :( I was a little sad when we finished it as the look on poor MiniSmurf's face looked like he had just lost a friend :D

I did check the Microcat and according to it, the colour code for the AU XR6 & 8 plus 'S' pack is Grey/White and the springs we got from you are either Yellow or Orange as a marking so???? like I said, will look into it further.

I did notice that KingSprings list the BA and AU as using basically the same springs on the front. The XR standard spring is listed as a low spring for the standard body on AU and BA, I might have to go into work and take a look at a spring and measure it's free height.
Still, the bloody things feels SO much better in the front and doesn't seem to dive like a hippo when stopping. :)

We had to change all the sway bar rubbers and the Caliper slide plates plus I had to free a partially seized caliper slide on the L/H side. Also took the Upper arms of the Eddy machine and put them on Monty (Cam will add pics later). Nice to have Top arm brackets that have longer studs and a plethora of shims for wheel alignment :D

This is a set of AU2 Futura wagon springs I have. The shocks are heavy duty upgraded Pedders but the springs I am pretty certain are the originals. The colour on the top of the spring is purple and down the side of the spring in light green.

How do these compare to the others?

Well, the AU series 1,2,3 Futura wagons had one only type spring it had light blue markings, the XR springs are all the same for all models in the front and are used on ALL wagons and Sedans (except Ghias) with sports suspension. I know we don't have any at work and if I rang Ford I would have a hard time finding someone who knew how to use a ruler :D

The ONLY spring I can find that has the light green markings on them are Series 2 AU sedans with IRS. I give up, all these markings and still no sense out of any of them :(

Will see what happens Ash, thanks for going to so much trouble mate. :)

I still feel that spring rates have something to do with it.

AU being a heavier car etc, would have stiffer springs, and would therefore make a lighter car like the Eseries sit higher etc.

I bet you guys have been eyeing off the grinder as a quick fix LOL.

Cheers
BenJ

I know i would have by now

Im not sure if it has been covered yet, but are the spring seats on the struts mounted in the same (or close to the same) position on both the AU and e-series struts? Thats the only thing i can think of that may be affecting the ride height, apart from spring rates as BenJ suggested.

Awesome work getting the AU items into an e-series though, as BenJ said earlier, you may be one of the first to have done this

Well, if you were to put them together (ED and AU) shock/spring you would swear that they were identical except for the tapered spring and the Shock shaft diameter. The top mount is the same from EBII to AUIII and the Rubber under it is the same as well.
We will figure this out for sure :D

What a friggin nightmare of a day. Had to go do some shopping first, which included picking up some springs from a guy off ebay, then got home and got started putting the new springs on around 1pm. Guess what. The new springs are too damned short. With the cap on the end of the shock absorber, there was still room to move the spring up and down. $125 down the drain. :(

Went to pedders and bought a set of AU XR Super Lows (according to the salesman). They are the red ones in the image. Low and behold, these ones actually did the job. YAY. We finally finished getting the damned things in (after waiting for paint to dry) around 8:15 with light quickly fading. Managed just enough time to get a piccie of the front lowered section to show you all. The lowering of the a*** will occur tomorrow, then I'll be getting a wheel alignment done on Friday and I'll bring Monty along Friday night for everyone to drool over.

Have a lookee: Oh, and I've noted the irony that the units that came out were a red shock absorber with a black spring and gone back in a black shock with a red spring. LOL
