looking good. yeah that metal bar also illuminates the inside of the car on fairlanes (i think fairmonts too) aswell as the door locks. its a great feature

Ok they dont light up at all o well im not real fussy about it. Todays Progress This morning before a doctors app. involved pulling out the front and rear seats, center console and carpet. I gave the fairmont interior which will replace the GLi interior another quick spray with the carpet cleaner which works well. Im also swapping the carpet because mine has sand in it (from previous owners location) which is impossible to vaccum out as well as the other being in better general condtion. First this in the morning will involve removing the current saging head lining then replacing it with the one from my t5 EA which is in prefect condition. the head lining in the fairmont is brand new but not stock patter/material. But i took it out and will be selling it along with the fairmont center light and rear map reading lights with wiring loom/harness. Sorry no pictures of total progress today, will have some before and after pictures posted once interior is in. TODAYS WTF IS THIS Q This is were my fellow fordmod members can help me out. WTF is this plug i found on the passenger side just under the carpet? Photo shoot Heres another shot of my car, just because i can:) Currently on the hunt for new places to shoot around my area.

Does your car have ABS? If not I believe that is the plug for one of the Rear ABS looms.

Excellent work Mick,
Just had a read through your thread and it's good to see there's another boxcar fanatic in the making As far as I'm concerned, there is no better first car for those just starting out in the mod department. There a dime a dozen and cheap as chips to repair/replace as you have learnt the hard way Glad to see you weren't hurt to bad! I really like what you are doing with the car.
If you want the door handle light triggering system working, you will have to add all the wiring in. Your barrel probably doesn't have illumination either, so you would have to swap that or install the lighting onto yours etc. |

In fact the door light system is interwined with the Fairmont BEM, so you would need the full Fairy loom and BEM etc.
I have just removed mine, as one wasn't working, and if you lifted up the one that did work it set the alarm off. LOL. BenJ

I really enjoy working on the car except on hot days, due to medical conditions when i was younger i am subject to not just headachs but migrains very easily. To much stress or strain on my eyes and all that crap doesnt go down well. All the exra wiring i know of is being used as its all incorporated into the door loom and then into car loom. The barrel has the light feature as i swapped the fairmont ones into mine because mine were missing the tabs and looked crap from the outside pictures below. the top one came out and bottom one went in, as wiring attached. LOL. BenJ Well ive got the entire fairmont car here so ive got the dash loom, whats BEM stand for? i looked it up but nothing cheers. Todays Progress Today included Replacing headlining replaced the head lining as mine was saging very bad, it would sit on my head as i was driving and im short! I used the one sitting in the EA as it was perfect. Took me like an hour just to do the head lining. The head lining was only jsut connected, if there was no plastic triming ect it would have fallen off. Change ignition Changed to to suit the changed door locks plus mine was pretty worn and there was no clicks just a smoot turn untill it started was very ahrd to get it just on ACC. I removed the bottom steering colum cover and used a 3mm allen key to push the tab while wiggling the key around the first click. This only took a few minutes. Finishing interior Finished bolting in the front and rear seats and put all plastic trimings back on from changing head lining and carpet. Took a while to put rear seat back rests in as the brackets were bent and didnt want to go it, so after staying calm(swearing, cursing), and carfully(forcefuly, banging) it into position i eventually got the brakets right so the back rest locked back into position. Also replaced the plastic side trims on the seats as they were dryed out, cracked chipped. This was easy just a fews screws and a nut, had some trouble getting the hight adjuster majig off but after standing in dads shed i spotting this thing, dunno waht its used properly for but it worked a treat for waht i wanted, basicly its got 3 fingers and when you tighten the middle bolt it pulls., see pictures. Todays WTF IS THIS question As some might know this is were you can help this if from the eb fairmont, a sensor? or something of the like which my GLi doesnt have. the same again a second plug instead of one going into the alt. not the best picture but should help. Tomorrows plan Tomorrow im looking at starting to dismantle the fairmont mechanicly and swap somethings over. I noticed some of those nice red bushes and the over flow bottle with sensor. Ive got 3 extra dash mats all in good condition. the first id asume is on the fairmont you have? which may have climate control??? another words its just another temp sensor for something in the car.
the second is the wires from the alternator to the ECU so the car knows its workiing correctly. when its faulty it activates the light on the dash. |

Sorry i should of been more accurate, ive updated the pictures in the post before. Yes both photos are from the fairmont, id assume it had climate control but it had no dash when i got it. So the gli doesnt tell the ecu when the alternator isnt working? The fairmont must have a different engine loom/harness, mine has the plug for the stuff in first pic so would it be woth changing?? The wiring for the alternator is different on mine so What i really would like to know is can i take the new alternator of the fairmont and put it in mine, the wiring looks different and i dont want to have to change the loom/harness. So far this morning this is what i was happy to find Currently in the middle of taking out all the bushes from the front suspension as there all much better than my old stocko ford ones. I forgot to ask if you still had the rear garnish while i was there, dont really want to drive there just for 1 thing and post wont be worth it.

BEM is body electronics module. Controls electrical stuff, like interior & dash lighting for example.
If you have the dash loom, swap it in and add the climate control, trip computer, the better cluster (which you might have) etc. Bonnet loom will have plugs for climate sensor, cruise wiring, ABS wiring etc. Using the fairmont dash and bonnet loom will also make the coolant sensor work without any extra wiring. |

Mick okies.... id say yes it would have had a climate control unit fitted and thats what the extra sensor is. the GLi still has an alternator light on the dash. it will have the plug on your alternator i can assure you that lol. there is 2 types of alternators ford used in the EB/ED range (i left off the EA as there is a 3rd one for CFI engines but thats another story) you will have one of 2 types of plugs... a big oval looking one or a small push on type the same as the circles temp sensor plug but in black. if you have a look at your fairmont you can see there is an adaptor from 1 plug style (mitsubishi style) to the bosch style alternator. if you keep that adaptor you can fit either style alternator to your car. mitsubishi plug is the silver/grey plug you can see closer to the camera. that alternator is a bosch |

Thanks for the BEM info, i dont really care for the climate control and ive got cruise control already and not interested in the ABS either but i should just swap the looms anyways, that sounds like a idea to do when i do the t5 conversion ill swap in while motor is out and getting a birthday(rebuild). Or perhaps i shouldnt bother rebuilding it and just go for an EL or AU engine as i want the BBM, i really want an au motor but not were near confident in doing myself. huggiebear wrote: ..................... EF - AU EF is basicly bottom of range and not much better than ED, EL - AU If going EL i would be looking for a hybrid 98 model but hey it would be easier to sorce an AU with low k's. AU series 1, 2, 3 So now to sort the AU, i dont know much about them i dont know which have the VCT, VCT sounds good but im assuming its alot more work than non VCT. What AU engines have VCT? is it just the fairlanes and XR's? I guess im after a AU motor non VCT, i hear the AU has a really good bottom end. If i go to AU my JMM dev kit will still fit, so then only engine work needs to be done to get to my goal. Im pretty confident with the mechanical, its the electrical i dont know sh|t about. Maybe i need to chat with troyman as he had a AU motor in his ED. *calls out* Troy man, where you at? Does the AU engine bolt up and work well with an EA T5 (with au bell housing) or should i look for a AU manual? Would i still use a 3.23 LSD (with EA T5 and an AU motor) so first gear isnt to short. no point going EF as they are coil pack and you would have to reset the dizzy in there. with AU motors some people are having issues with the AUX shafts snapping due to the added restrain from the dizzy (designed for coil packs)
i have a tickford EL XR Hybrid motor in my car... not much difference at all over an AU stock motor. as for things bolting up... XF gearbox's bolt up to AU motors so everything in between will fit |
