If you go AU, im going to recommend using an EF ECU and loom, and coil packs. Too many people are destroying AUX shafts with the dizzy.
One thing to remember is the sump clearance issue with an AU motor. |

I am aware of solutions to the sump clearance problem, wanted to make sure you were too.
Basically, whether you get an ED/F/L/AU motor, you could run coilpacks or a dizzy. You will have to change ECU and Loom for running coilpacks, which won't destroy the aux shaft. With the coils though, you cannot mechanically adjust timing simply. Unsure whether you can using the sensor that fits on the aux shaft. I think you may need to run an EL computer for the AU/EL motor (if using a dizzy), unless you want to lose the BBM. You can do this, all the externals will swap across. I would go AU with EF ECU, and get the EF ECU flashed to the XR tune which is a little more agressive. The EF ECU will switch the BBM, and also control thermofans automatically. Not sure how they are wired in regards to smartlock etc. You can use an EL ECU in the same way if you choose to run a dizzy, it also can be flashed to the XR tune, will also switch the BBM and thermos. SO to summarise, no matter whether ED/F/L/AU: EL ECU with BBM and DIZZY EF ECU with BBM and Coilpacks Your ED ECU with dizzy and log manifold etc. |

IF you use an EF ECU you WILL need to install the full EF loom as the plugs are nothing alike and wont fit. unless your going to sit there for hours on end adapting wire for wire. also you cant just go EB ECU plug 1 to EF ECU plug 1 as they dont work that way.
so unless your going full EF loom or aftermartket ECU i wouldnt bother with coil packs. throw in an AU motor change the AUX shaft over with one from your EB motor, drop in the dizzy grind off the sump fins on the front and then match it up to an EL ECU. add the few extra wires in for BBM switching and thermos if you want. tho i prefere the davis craig thermo switch as you have more control over the temp. |

I don't think it is necessary to change the actual Aux shaft. They are the same part no at Ford right through from EA to AU.
What I would recommend doing is to use the cog off the Coil tigger do-hicky (can't remember what it is called lol) on your dizzy. BenJ

Haha hell no im not sitting any were doing any wiring! EF ecu = fail(hard work). EL ecu it is! Ive already got the thermos going from a craig davis kit thou i really would like to relocate the switch, i followed the doco on here and put it in open plain view near air box. It might be worth hooking them up to the ecu because i wouldnt change the temp much if ever, as long as they come on it suits me. Then again just reloctate the switch and keep the kit. I dont like the sound of grinding the fins, plus dads handy with the welder. Dont get me wrong, AU XR6 VCT in an ED would be awesome Have you thought about dropping in a early EL XR6 (non hybrid) donk? |

Thanks again for all your comments and opinions, KWIKXR, PIMP_LTD, other EF motor owner/users. I apologise as i had no intension to down grade nor bad mouth the EF motors. My comment had no supporting evidence or information. It was infact a rushed remark made without proper thought as i was just trying to get to the point that i would like an AU motor. Im going to study Troymans thread as his got a vct in his ED, maybe he would be interested in helping out with some wiring. Regards, Michael

Do you have a mate that can do it?
Its really easy. REALLY easy. I suggest if you want to go down that path, go and buy a soldering iron, heatgun, some proper wire strippers, a reel of wire and some heatshrink. You can get portable soldering irons with a heatgun tip, not sure how good they are. Then start practicing! |
