Well over the next few days off I have some things to do. Have to finish off the new clutch install on the Mav. It has sat there unloved for long enough and I miss driving it. I might have to get it back on the road and bring it down to Liverpool one night for a giggle.
Then I need to pull the V8 diff out of the wreck and swap it over so I have the LSD in. Then the rest of the green EB gets stripped 5.0 and box out and body gone, then I can start the fun bits. Before it gets pulled apart but Im going to put some time into getting it running again and find out what is rooted in it. From memory the motor rattled on startup and did blow some smoke on start. Ill get it running and spend a bit of time to work out whats wrong with it. It was really quiet when it was running but I only had it going just long enough to pull a HUGE burnout in it in the driveway. The missus and neighbours love me! I had intentions of building a turbo 6 for the ED over time but I have thought stuff it I have a complete 5.0 conversion there so I might as well use it. It i can sort the motor out enough to be reliable I will just drop it in ED and run it for a while. If not hopefully a set of rings and bearings will sort it all out. Busy times ahead. 2 questions. Whats the difference between a V8 and a 6 radiaitor in the box cars , my thermos and that will be going on with the V8. I dont ahve a V8 radiator at the moment cause I sold it when I didnt think I would need it so I need to get another one or if I will get away with a 6 cylinder one I will be happy for a while. Also what issues will I have fitting the EB1 engine bay harness and ECU to the ED? Need some input by the box car wiring gurus here.

the V8 radiator hose locations are in different spots apparently. there is a few differenced between EB1 and ED but if you swap the full loom you wont have an issue

Re the wiring.
EB1 did not have smartlock. You will need to use a smartlock bypass module to use any smartlock ECU if you use the EB1 wiring. The EB1 engine bay wiring is not compatible with the EB11 dash wiring, so you would need to swap it all over. I believe the V8 ECU has a different pinout to the 6 ECU as well. Good Luck. BenJ

dont the V8's use a different ECU to run the gearbox like the EA's did? if so then he would have to use the V8 dash loom aswell

Yep the EB1 V8 and ED six computers are different and there is a seperate TCU for the V8. SO Ill be changing the dash loom now as well as the bay loom. Thats ok cause I have both here.
Will my climate control , instruments etc in the ED work running the EB1 dash and engine looms? Ill be putting the EB1 ecu in so there is no drama with the smartlock there cause it doesnt have it. I might need to fit a new controller to the central locking for the keyless entry but. Wonder if the EB1 body control module will work when swapped over?

I have an EB11 climate control module plugged in to my EB1 dash and everything seems to operate fine. As for the instruments, did the EB1 have the digital cluster? If so, the wiring is completely different to the 6 Guage cluster and will require some work with a soldering iron and a lot of patience to sort out. I would build an adapter loom instead of cutting and shutting the original loom. I am about to do the same for my wagon to fit the NL cluster. Remote central locking was not an option with EB1, so you will have to use an after market alarm system if you want keyless entry. The EB1 body control module should work but does not have some of the features like fading lights etc. Cheers BenJ

Thanks BenJ. Yeah the EB1 originally had a digital cluster. Stupid me sold it.
Using an aftermarket alarm is cool. I dont think much of the smartlock anyway. Hopefully with the loom changes and stuff I should be able to get the ED BCM to work. Its nearly putting me off doing the conversion!

EVL098,
Nice looking car, I notice earlier in your thread the autolec said no alternator upgrades were possible. Check out this earlier thread of mine. http://www.fordmods.com/forums/eb2-ed-i ... alternator The setup is still performing well and made a lot of difference when the thermos etc were operating. Cheers, Mac

Well the executive decision has been made. Its V8 time.
Bit of a funny story about how the decision was made. We went up to the animal house today ( my parents place ) and their neighbour is somewhat of a knob. I decided I would be a a*** and do a nice little skid out the front of his place cause it woudl really annoy him. Childish I know but half the stuff he does is nowhere near comparable to what I was going to do , mine was mild. Well it had been raining so I gave good old MR ED everything he had to start toasting the tyres. He did absolutely nothing but moan and groan. I tried every old trick I knew to light it up and all I succeded in doing was breaking the LH engine mount. Well my old man who had quite a few scotches by this time started giving me heaps and telling me to stop stuffing around and put the V8 in. My reply was that the V8 was rooted so I wasnt going to bother. After a bit of discussion on what could be wrong with the V8 he come out with some words of wisdom. " Son whats the difference between putting a rooted V8 in and taking a gamble and continuing to drive your very rooted 6 that cant even turn the tyres on a wet road , its a disgrace. What do the really have to lose? At least when it blows up its a broken down V8 and not the shame of a broken down 6" Hate to admit he has a point. So Im going to get my 4x4 finished off , store my camper trailer at a mates for a few weeks and change the motors over. I will get the V8 back up and running in the EB before I pull it out , see if I can sort out the knocking on start up and then swap everything over before I get rid of the green car. That way I will have all the bits required to do the change sitting here. Get the Blue car up and driving for a while and see what I can sort out with a bit of running around. Then if I cant fix the issues with a new oil pump and a clean up I will start looking at rebuilding the V8. Its not really going to cost me any money to try my luck so I dont see how I have anything to loose either. Stay tuned once we start this and we will see just how much stuffing around it all is!

good stuff. oh i found out today the I6 radiator should fit a V8. i had a look at a NL V8 lane and it was identicle to my EL I6 radiator. all inputs and outputs were identicle and the thickness was identicle. thats should help you out a little

Cheers mate that helps me out lots.
Ill pop down and see my bro in the parts shop on Monday at some time and check the hoses diameters etc to confirm!

Just been looking on evil bay and it seems that there is a difference between 6 and V8 in the EB ED models but that in the later models they are the same.
Strange. Ill shoot an email off to one of the sellers and find out the differences.

thats strange. what would be the difference between EB/ED V8 and EF/EL V8 radiators then? you would assume they would then be the same

Ok well have found out that the V8 and 6 cylinder radiator are in actual fact different.
Need to suss a couple of things out over the next couple of days but there might be a slight side step in plans with the build.
