Oh, and I have never done a TFI, I assume that is dizzy out?

You can undo the locating bolt and bracket, and then rotate the dizzy around to provide access to the two phillips head screws and remove the TFI while the dizzy is in the car. I should be finishing at either 3 or 4pm tomorrow and could drive straight out to you. Cheers BenJ

As of January 1998, EL Falcon will be fitted with a revised I6 engine. The revision will be completely transparent as far as the Customer is concerned (no change to engine appearance, power output fuel economy, service requirements, etc). It will also be transparent to you as far as basic engine maintenance and diagnostic procedures are concerned. However, where internal engine repairs are to be performed, it is important that the Technician realises the difference and is aware of the unique engine re-assembly procedures and specifications. Interchangeability of parts between the old and the new level engines is not possible except where replacement part numbers are unchanged. Do not attempt to fit new level parts to the new engine, or vice versa. Vehicle Identification There will be a period during January 1998 when both the old and the new level engines will be used at the Assembly plant. Thus the vehicle build date may not necessarily identify the level of engine fitted to the vehicle. Old level engines can be identified by a 95DA of 95DT casting on the cylinder head and a 96DA casting on the engine block. New level engines can be identified by a 96DA or 96DT casting on the cylinder head and a VR2A casting on the engine block. Note: Approximately 1,600 of these new engines will have the old level head and valvetrain fitted. The same idetification method may be used to individually identify new/old level heads. Generally speaking, the engine dissassembly/assembly procedures are unchanged. The main difference is the size and shape of various internal components. It is important that only new level components are used as replacement parts as in many cases the old level parts will not fit or will lead to the failure of other components. With respect to major engine repairs, the main points that you will need to keep in mind are: -revised hardware tightening torque specifications (some components are now ‘torque to yield’). -revised bolt tightening sequences. -revised camshaft-to-crankshaft timing procedure. Lash Adjuster Removal The procedure for lash adjuster removal is unchanged. However the retaining ring has been deleted so that the piston may separate from the main body during removal if care is not taken. It is still recommended that the lash adjuster not be dismantled. Parts Information The following list identifies the upgraded parts used in the Falcon I6 engine -Engine Block (identified by VR2A casting instead of 96DA) -Crankshaft -Crankshaft Sprocket -Idler Sprocket -Idler Sprocker Bolt (black finish) -Timing Chain -Crankshaft Main Bearing Caps -Main Bearings -Con Rod Nuts & Bolts (WR2A stamped on bolt) – torque to yield -Flywheel Bolts (auto trans only) -Cylinder Head (identified by 96DA or 96DT casting insted of 94DA or 95DT) -Camshaft -Camshaft Sprocket -Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (black finish) -Inlet and Exhaust Valves, Guides, Springs and Stem Seals -Rocker Arms and Washers -Rocker Shafts and Supports Torque To Yield. Components MUST be discarded and replaced if removed or loosened. Specifications. -Con Rod Nuts : 25Nm, then rotate an additional 90 degrees. -Camshaft & Idler Sprocket Bolts : 20Nm, then rotate an additional 40 degrees.

some aftermarket bosh coils come with a extension peice.. so it is possible to relocate it to a more useful place.
i had mine hanging off the intake. using the stock kinglead too i cannot remember how much i paid for it. as the reciept would be in the eb at my parents place got it from bursons if thats any help i'll see if i have the box for it in the shed though the coil is inbetween intake runner 1 and 2 the extension peice was quite long aswell. so even if i hadnt already extended it to the shock tower it would of reached there anyways i can get some clearer pics over the weekend if that would be needed? ive got to start pulling the eb apart anyways to cut the rad support out so the motor can be removed |

but found the exact thing on e-bay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-GENUINE- ... 45f84bf230 i paid around $70 for mine. iirc i didnt pay trade, as i didnt have my work shirt but i'll get the number off mine when im up at the parents on the weekend |

It's always a good idea to have a spare coil and TFI in the house, or in the car with enough tools to do the job on the spot.
I've just used my spare TFI, so now I need to get another. |

It lives! Ben dropped by with his spare coil so we chucked it in and turned the key. Fired first time and idled perfectly with a nice rumble from the 2 1/2" system. Off to Bursons tomorrow to grab a new coil along with a spare TFI for later one and mount the new coil in an accessible place. Will put it in the same place Ben has his, mounted to an aircon compressor bolt.
All that is to do now before blue slip is to check all the usual stuff, already found the indicators don't work so will chuck in another relay and check the fuses. Rach is a happy camper and just wants to drive it now All in all $500 well spent me thinks....... Cheers RD

Went off to Bursons today and grabbed a new Bosch coil, the one with everything on one end. I then set about making a mount for it to live just above the aircon compressor. That worked out merrily and I then extended to supplied extension lead a little more to reach back to the original plugs location. Fits very nicely snuggled just inbetween the heater pipe and the aircon compressor, much more accessible if need be. Gonna have to buy another one of these and put it into my wagon!
I then did a blue slip type check and the only thing I found wrong was the windscreen washers didn't work, water poured out of the side of the bonnet instead. Further investigation found the hose had come off the Y piece, pushed it back on and all fine. Everything else works as intended so it shouldn't have any problems getting a blue slip sometime next week. I had a bit of daylight left so I decided to install a couple of things. Got the Fairlane dome light in finally and also installed the Ghia ECU I got. All in all this things runs bloody nicely, the only real thing I can pinpoint is a rattle from the exhaust system after a quick rev and back to idle. COuld be the cat converter is shagged, no problem if it is. I'll see what the blue slip guy says about it.

Get the new beast a wash today in prep for the blue slip. Didn't scrub up too bad actually for a $500 car:
Bit of an issue from idle, will try and die. I think that might be the new ECU and it hasn't learnt it place in life just yet. As I can't drive the car on the road at the moment I can't test that theory, will get the blue slip and then decide if I need to put the stock ECU back in.... Anyhoo, doing this car has motivated me to do something to my own wagon, off to my thread to post stuff now Until after the blueslip..... Cheers RD
