Hey guys, my name is Dan and I thought I would post a addition to the garage. Here is my pride and joy, my 1993 NC Fairlane Ghia, 5.0l V8
. She is my second car, bought it off my dad in basicaly stock form aside from the lowering and ftr's. Its been through some tough times (my stupid driving resulting in a few fender bender's and 2 yellow stickers) and has only broken down 3 or so times in the 10 years its been in my family. My auto was slowly dying, so I decided I would go manual ($1800 ef xr8 box) At first after the manual conversion it was slow and un-responsive, so I did the resistor trick I read about on fm to the BTR trans ecu, that livened it up a massive amount but it still felt slugish, and would stall through corner's quite often so after some reading I decided to check what my base idle was set at. Turns out the idle screw was set to about 350rpm. So i set it to around 750rpm and now its a machine. I want it to be a mild streeter but nothing to over the top. (I will post some pic's up soon) At this current point she currently has: -3" Cat's back with single res. -T5 conversion, malwood pin, EF xr8 box. -FTR's, standard low front, standard rear. Boge shortened strut's, full Nolathane. -MSD Ignition cap, K&N panel filter. -Resistor tricked BTR TCU. -Pioneer premier sound system, 15" JBL sub, pioneer splits front, pioneer 3 way sears. -Custom black carpet. -White E-series 5l engine cover signed by d**k Johnson. Awaiting install -J3 chip (advanced tech). -Pacemaker 4000's(awaiting new cats for install) -80mm lightning maf. Wanted / looking for: Thermo's , Acl race bottom end rebuild, 75mm TB, explorer upper and lower manifold, under drive kit. Thanks for looking, Dan. Sounds good mate. Those T5s really liven up these LWB, one of the best mods you can do. I've just gone full circle and now have the auto back in.
Perhaps down the track, you will be able to load up a EB-ED EX8 manual bin file(if someone is working on this??) to your J3 chip so that the resistor trick will be history. |

Thanks for the reply, yeah I have posted a request in the ecu forum. My next plan of attack if that falls through is to attempt to tune with 2dca (xr8 sprint manual) but i'm going to have to modify a Gufb strategy def file because there is nothing available to modify those bin's. I have tested a burn with but it runs like crap cause of the 24lb and 73mm maf its set up for.

Hi mate look forward to see some pics.
nc5l wrote: -Resistor tricked BTR TCU. What is a BTR TCU? I am assuming you are saying BTR Transmission computer unit, or something like that. There is no such thing as a TCU in a ford, the resistor trick is all about the ECU. I also would plan to remove the MalWood pin as you will break your pedal box and have to remove your dash anyway. Because it is designed by people only interested in making a quick buck rather than offering a real solution. There is a tech doc on modding a auto pedal box in the tech docs section. welcome to fordmods |

Sorry Joshie, but there is in the V8's. Not until AU do the V8's get a TCU and ECU in one

terroristghia is correct all v8 and ea,ebI had a tcu. there is a tech doc here some where that shows how to do it, only thing is that ford decided to mount it to the pedal box on the clutch side, so you have so put it in a weird un secured place behinde the center console. If you dont do the resistor trick, your ecu will think you are in reverse and retard timing and you will be moving pretty slow.
I never heard that about the malwood's, and i have had no probs with it so far, and i also have a heavy duty organic clutch. I also helped a mate with a el manual cause he bent his pedal box up bad thanks to a button clutch. After putting a malwood in she was like new. Thanks guys. |

Sorry my mistake, you know while I was typing that I had a thought in the back of my mind that I might be corrected.
Never mind I learnd something today. So why do the V8's require a TCU anyways compared to the I6? I still stand for my opinion on the pedal pin though, dont want to be stranderd somewere because of fawlty engineering lol. Cheers Josh |

Got any pics mate? I'm just awaiting on my AU box from aussie that should be here this week, then i am throwing that in my DC. whats it like to drive compared to the auto? Cause they are big beasts. And i'm also doing the MalWood pin, i dont see how it would break, it is actually stronger than the actual manual pedal box, esp when you use that big brass plate thing it comes with. Keen to see some photo's though and tell me what she's like to drive

@xfwagon, ah someone else doing the nc with a 5spd. There so much nicer, more spiritied and less of the grandad sort of feeling when driving. You will see what i mean, and you wont look back lol.
I'll get some photo's soon. @joshie007, I would say the reason for using a secondary controller would be that with the 5l's being sequential injection, and the extra sensors(maf, extra o2), the ecu would be processing alot more information, if i remember correctly the processor's only ran at 18mhz, doesnt leave much room for the extra processing required for the 4spd auto. Possibly also that they would require more input's and output's than eec-iv supported back then. I could be wrong. |
