Started modifying the mondeo sump (the hump is at the completely wrong end), bought a VS commo one and cut the hump off the front (then ran out of cutting discs) so i gotta wait till the hardware opens tomorrow to get some more.will post picks once its finished

turns out the MT-75 i have is nowhere near close to fitting the zetec engine, i think i may have a diesel? one (it has a 5mm thick adapter plate with it that fits most of the holes on the zetec) so once i find a manual zetec flywheel and clutch, ill start working on making a new adapter plat (or maybe ill find a petrol MT-75 or even a type 9 to use before then)

I can't wait for pics of the sump when it's done.

Bummer about the gearbox. I didn't know the transit van came in a petrol model! I've driven a number of the current type in diesel spec, with both stick shift & push button manual ( which was clutch less ), really weird to get used to when you can slap it into Auto mode, but you still get a little roll back like a manual releasing the clutch! They also can get up & move when they have no load, lol.

sump is half done but then i broke my welder so no more till i can get a new liner and neck, was coming along nicely too, although i welded the commo bit on a bit crooked (dont drink and weld?)

Engine loom only needs some minor adjustments to work in RWD (lengthen supression cap wiring and alt wiring, re route ECU part of loom) - and new coil bracket almost done

Found on ebay:
1 toyota split case 5 speed to suit cortina
2 transit MT75 2lt petrol (bellhousing looks like a match)
1 type 9 5 speed

still keen on a transit gearbox cos itl hold 250HP, type 9 is good for 200, and split case would be OK for 150?, and i already have spare MT-75 guts

Won (Ebay) another MT-75 (to suit 2litre petrol) and a flywheel and clutch (to suit the same)

Coil pack bracket is done,
started planning the idler pulley for the Acc belt

Wow was i off the mark, the gearbox i bought (thought it was an MT-75) turned out to be an isuzu light commercial gearbox!, ive secured a real mt-75 this time, and a transit starter, flywheel and clutch that should work with the zetec engine

if i am not mistaken that is a front bit of a v6 commy sump is it not.. or is it just a similair setup

yeh, front section of a VS commodore sump, i couldnt recreate the volume of the original sump with the space i had to work with so i used this one cos it has wings

Nice work there on the sump!

IF you have not ever modified / made a sump before, this below may save a headache & extra work.

Drop the sump from the engine, suspend it on some thin wood a couple of inches above a couple of newspapers, and fill it above the weld lines, cheap oil, even dirty oil will do, and wait a day or two, hell maybe even 3 to make sure it don't leak!

I modified a sump for my torana turbo project, looks like a home made hi energy sump, but found it had 2 small leaks using the above method. Was much better to find out this way before putting it all back in the engine bay, then having to remove it to repair!

ive already done this with water (much thinner and only takes 5mins to leak through) took me 3 goes to get all the little leaks sealed!

althoug i may still do what youve suggested and leave it for a week or two, just to be certain!

made up the idler pulley, mounted it halfway between where the PS and AC pulleys used to be, its a small bit of an EF/EL tensioner welded to a cut down mondeo PS/AC cradle. will post up some pics along with the next collage

man this project is s**t hot! absolutely love it. always had a soft spot for retrotech style project, they have the best of both worlds; old school looks and modern reliability and power.

Nice work, i never thought about using water, i guess the reason i didn't is because the sump would be prone to corrosion with water, much less so holding what it is designed to hold, being oil. lol.

I've got that many projects on the go, i would fill the sump & leave it for a couple days with water & end up with issues...... :oops:

MT 75 hasnt arrived yet, but i did win a C3 auto for $7.50 on ebay - it bolts up perfectly EXCEPT i need to get the zetec auto flexplate re drilled as the converter mounting pads are different (only 3 and smaller PCD).

back to the manual though
Transit flywheel (2.0 petrol) could be used, but id need to get some teeth machined into the back of it for the crank angle sensor, and get about half its mass removed.

im now awaiting the MT-75 before i decide whether im gonna find a zetec flywheel, or if ill get the transit one modified. im also contemplating using the auto, but its pretty clear that 5 speed manual > 3 speed auto

Very cool dude! I reckon the 5spd will be much more fun to drive & should give you better economy than the 3spd auto. Unless you spend a lot of time in very heavy traffic, then you may wish you had an auto.

I converted my EB Ghia to a 5spd and the only time i think should i have done it was when i am in very heavy traffic, as the clutch is rather heavy. I guess i could convert it to a hydraulic setup couldn't i? Otherwise i love it being a 5spd.
