Its about to clock over to 160k km and it has the 4 speed but f**k me dead I was driving home from school came to the hill leading home and I changed down manually and nothing I asked the guy that did the gearbox and he said it would be the inhibitor switch on the side of the box so ill replace that on tuesday when I get pai. Is $70 a good price for it the guys local and hes had a stoke but hes still servicing gearbox and that so im thinking help him out as he doesnt get much buisness. Ill post pics in a couple of mins of everything ive done just need to take them again.

It should have kicked back, but if you've been doing it a bit, the switch may have pooped out from being old and not used to it.

Has it completely failed? IE; wont shift at all between P R and D?, or only between D and 1?

$70 is a good price for a new switch.

I also like to help out the smaller guys too, I like to know my money isn't going to a millionaire d**k who doesn't really care about much more than my money, and I'm helping someone out who's helping me.

My 3.9 had 275k on it when I converted to manual, and I drove it mildly hard, was still going strong when I pulled it out and upgraded.. clocked 300k in it just before I did.

Pics are good.. worth a thousand words..

I need to get my garage thread page count up a bit more...

Just between 1 and D if im coming up a hill it will kickdown but theres one spot where the car changes between 2nd and 3rd thats why I was hoping it would work if I shifted manually.

As I have mentioned I'm no auto expert, but with the 4 speed it may work a little differently because of the electrical part, so when you click from D to 3 it is more a suggestion and the box will do it if the electrics agree... maybe..

The autos I have had were older 3 speeds so when you clicked it was selecting directly..

What I have learned with this magna, which has a 4 speed, I often think it kicks back to 2nd when i turn a corner or give it a little more stick, but its 3rd instead...

What selections do you have on it? (i cant recall and my LTD is up at the shed) is it P,R,N,D,2,L?

that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It's a known fact that 4Ls are smoother running and better on fuel than the 3.9s

Whats your fuel mileage mine through town is about 13L 100km my stepdads 16L 100km, on the highway mine is just about 9L 100km my stepdads 13L 100km. Hmm I see your point right there oh and I take it easy in my lane barely drive it over 3500rpm but my stepdad wont take it over 2000rpm unless hes going up hill.

You could check the voltages at the ecu ( pin 30? Can't remember)

Drive: 2.8-3.2
Third: 1.8-2.2
Second: 1.3-1.7
First: 0.8-1.2

That will tell you if your ecu is getting the right voltages from your selector.

All factory fuel consumption figures averaged around 13L/100K. (city/highway avge)

3.9 AND 4.0s...

according to one spec site it was 13.8L/100K for the 3.9 and 14.1L/100K for the 4.0...

It IS a known fact that fuel consumption is ALL about driving style in the end. A little more so with ECU cars (you can lean off a carby manually, but an ECU will do its thing forever)P

there were also revisions of each ECU (the last character on the 4 character ECU code) so that will also come into play.

They "reset" every 100Ks too

Age of the vehicle and life story will play in today too.

Data and specs are my favourite thing. I buy the factory ford manuals partly for this reason..

Interesting that your stepdads uses 3L/100K more than yours even though he drives easier... many factors could be in play there..

I have removed my trip computer, but the one in the old V8 I owned floated between 16-19 (had it up to 21 for a week after thrashing it the whole time)

I reset the trip meter everytime I fuel up and use that as an average counter. I used to average 50K to $10@1.79/L.. (f**k alice springs fuel prices )

either way... 0.1L dose make f**k all of a difference.

Have a search on the tech forum but it will involve a Multimeter and and clicking the shifter through the gears with the ign on and testing the appropriate wire for the correct voltage range.
