Short progress post.
freshly machined block and the new balancer. Cylinder head is coming along well, and should be finished next week. A nice looking clutch and flywheel turned up last friday while I was at the day surgery. Did some mock up work to double check after machining that everything is where I calculated it should be, It is. Did a bit house work on the block, The oil return passages on this block where about %80 blocked with casting flash, so that was knocked out and the areas cleaned up with a carbide bur. Also ran the bur around all the external edges to take the sharp s**t off to make it a little easier on the hands. |

stock AU1 head.
with new seats cut, intake seats cut to suit the new 2mm oversize valves exhaust intake Modified intake valve guides Mods to the guides consists of equalizing the lengths then shortening by 2mm, the protruding end was then tapered Guides will go back in so I can drop some of the old valves back in to protect the seats while I do the chambers. |

Spent some time in the workshop with Nick today.
Dummy assembly with one piston and rod and a pair of valves with some soft checking springs. The aim of the day was checking piston to valve clearance. looks like the exhaust side will be fine. The intake side is pretty close. Will have the pistons cut and recheck for clearance. Sorry Nick, forgot to bring the camera home. I'll get photos up during the week. |

tickford_6 you come across as pretty clued on, but why the long drawn out build?
is this an experiment?, or are customer funds stopping you slapping a motor together? |

There was a deal done right at the start that in it's self meant it was going to take a while, customer funds are the least of my worries, I've never been short, and Nicks account is currently substantially in the clear. This sort of thing is not the day to day cream my workshop survives on, As nick also understands the day to day running of the workshop has to come first. I do this after hours and work it in around my personal time with my family, I have spent many nights and weekends working through. (as can be seen by the latest update) It just happened that Nick was in town this weekend. Then there are hold ups with machine work that I sublet out. In this case the hold ups are always worth it, as the machining is always spot on. We are still looking good for the original deadline we agreed on at the start. Quote: or are customer funds stopping you slapping a motor together? I could have slapped an engine together by now, But I don't slap engines together. Any one could have bought most of these parts and staged cylinder head from any of the head guys and just bolted it all in. It's the detail work that you can't buy in a box that makes the difference. I'll let Nick tell you. But i'm sure he's been doing some serious thinking over the past few weeks.

Confusion is good, keeps it interesting.
Funny that this topic has resurfaced just now, Brad and I have been working away in the background. All I can tell you for sure at the moment is tyres will be shred. I'll have clarity on a few things by the time the Melbourne f1 is finished. |

I have played a nasty trick on nick too.
Nick was the one who torqued up the all the rod bolts in his engine. The first thing that made him think twice was me telling him "if you drop my torque wrench, you'll owe me $1000". The next one will be that feeling that you can't explain when you are about the turn the key on your first engine for the very first time. It's kind of like being ever excited while s**t bricks at the same time. But yes tyres will be shred to the sound of 6500RPM, rev limiter, turbo whistle and the sound horsepower. |
