I brought myself a little Datsun 720 Ute for a grand total of 500 dollars. In really good condition minus a few niggly things.

Atm it needs.

Front Seats... (Current ones are from a bluebird and can't adjust the seat and a really bad install)
Attention to passenger side of the roof turret has rust (a little bit of attention with the steel wire brush and alike to clean it up)
Acellerator cable needs attention as the linkage closer to the throttle assembly a bit loose.
Needs a new bonnet as the current one has a bit of rust and the trouble to fix that isn't worth it compared to another bonnet.

It is maroon in colour that has I am thinking had a respray sometime in it's life. and I am thinking that has been converted from coloumn manual to four on the floor. The previous owner instead of replacing the 1/4 window rubbers he just siliconed them up. It needs some new trim on the doors. Other then the points I just mentioned it has a strong motor and seems to be a healthy gearbox. From all accounts the car has only down roughly 250 thou kms.

I will post pictures and alike soon enough. Today I just spent time cleaning the interior and scrapping some of the rust off to see how bad it is.

Today I hosed the engine down to clean all the built up dust and s**t etc. Got to get some degreaser and a brush of some sort to clean the engine up more.

So far I have found that the linkage that controls the throttle body / carby is really dodgey, needs a new spring and or cable and spring. I have to get a wire brush to start cleaning up the rust on the passengers side. I the seats are a really bad fit. (well dodgy install) when the weather clears up I will remove the seats and carpet and clean the floor pan and measure up the seat holes and go hunting for replacment seats I am think that X3 Excel seats should be the goer..

I have been just looking for s**t and giggles atm and found that a decent sr20 motor (complete with loom etc) run from 1500 and up and bit more with an half cut... I think when I come to do it I might chase an halfcut from a silvia even if i end up with a ca18det. I think that it would be easier to get the engine running and alike if I just stripe the half cut and install the dash etc plug and play pretty much.

Any way a few photo's

Hey well I started to play with this today (well just scraped and tapped the rust etc) I was wondering how or what would be the best way to clean it and get it ready to prep etc. Should I just go out and get a wire brush and or a wire brush wheel on a drill and just take it back to bare metal and then get some kill rust and paint it on and bog it up. OR should I get some scrap metal and patch it up welding it in place with the mig and then prep and paint like any other panel?

Any ideas or help would be good...

Oh another picture of the rust.

I am sure / hope benji / SWC / RD with some advice cause they have all attempted (and won) with the battle with rust.

Yeah I don't want to half a** it, I was thinking either go to the wreckers and cut some turret of something that has damage but no damage and still maintain the correct curve etc.

Its going to be hard. To find the rust like that in the roof where it is it can be guaranteed there will be lots more in there as well.
I know when I opened the can of worms on my Maverick when I started I had a heap bigger job then originally thought. I still have a lot more to do to.
If you want to keep it cut it and weld it but be preparred to do a lot of cutting and welding.
If you are just doctoring it up Sikaflex a panel on the inside , throw a bit of POR15 or similar in to seal it and bog away.

Those Datto motors are strong buggers. My girlfriends brother has been thrashing the hell out of a 720 ute for the past 18 months and it's still going strong....He goes bush bashing with it, Spotlighting and even towing big caravans and horse floats and it isn't slowing down one bit.
They are prone to rust but once thats all taken care of you'll have yourself a reliable little ute to run around in.
