We hit a bit of a snag whilst trying to fit the exhaust manifold on the drivers side. Runners 3 and 4 were fouling on the engine mount. Having a closer look at runner 4 and how close it was to fouling on the upper suspension wishbone I decided to junk the hydralic mounts and go for something a bit neater and a bit more heavy duty. Enter the trailing arm bush mounts.

Image

These ones are rubber so they shouldnt vibrate as much as the nolethane ones but still limit engine movement more than the factory offerings.

Image

Had to remake the lower halves to fit.

The beauty of these mounts is how easy it is to split the upper and lower halves. A clutch change is not longer an engine out job. Its now an engine forward job. Simply unbolt the upper from the lower and the lower from the chassis, pull the lower halves out of the way and the engine just slides forward.

Passengers side might require a bit more enginuity when it comes to fabbing up the lower half due to the offset mount as a result of the oil filter.

And heres a pic of the heater hoses so far. The heater tap is a Gates universal style that I picked up for 30 bucks. The stock one was fouling on the back of the intake and if I moved it the heater cable was too short. The brass T pieces are for the turbo water lines. Just need to get some -10 to -6 reducers and a few other bits and pieces.

So I went out and got them wrapped in DEI titanium exhaust wrap. Man that stuff is itchy when you cut it. Not as bad as fibreglass but still a pain in the a***.

Did you try soaking it in water first? Not sure about the stuff you are using but I soak the lagging we used at work in water first, easier to cut, pulls tighter and of course less itch, I also use latex gloves and long/longs, so I haven't got the same exposure anyway.

Nah the new generation titanium wrap isn't meant to be soaked before wrapping. I'll keep it all in mind if I ever have to do this again.

Not much has happened these last few weeks apart from working on the airbox. Before we could build a box we needed to pick a filter first. I had a large'ish pod filter from supercheap lying around and thought it might do the trick. Its a duel taper unit that measures 150mm at the base, 120mm at the top and is 120mm tall. The inner taper is 70mm at the top, 40mm at the base and 60mm tall. Oh and its got a 4" inlet. Perfect match up to the turbo inlet. Worked out that its got around 50% more surface area than the standard AU panel filter.

Image

You'd think that it would be enough but according to Garrett its so small its not funny. For a 5.0 litre engine running 7psi boost, Garrett reccomend a filter with around 582 square inches surface area (accounting for pleats) for a maximum air velocity at the filter interface of 130ft/second. Anything faster than that and there is a chance of overspeeding the turbo due to cavitation. According to K&N the above filter is good for 720cfm or around 450hp. That's good enough for me.
I ran it by my turbo guy and he said they make a lot of assumptions and that I'll be fine for what I'm planning on doing.

Once we were happy with the filter it was time to get started on the airbox. In my case its a job I wouldn't wish on too many people.

First we had to fit the filter in the available space and once we were happy, start building a frame around it.

Image

Then as we accounted for things like the lower wastegate, potential aircon plumbing and the turbo drain we had to modify the frame with all sorts of wierd angles made up as we went along.

Image

Upside down view. Most of the other panels will be bolted into position so changing a headlight globe is possible without too much trouble.
Image

Its all coming along slowly and I hope to have it done by the end of the week and make a start on the snorkel soon too. I didn't think 4" was all that big but a 4" snorkel on a 4runner is bordering on offensive (but then again so is a 5" tall reverse cowl scoop).

Other than that not much to report apart from my gauges coming in the mail.

http://prosportgauges.com/60mm-premium-evo-series.aspx

Yes they look wanky but I feel that I need a didgital fuel pressure gauge to setup my base fuel pressure on my adjustable fuel reg. So I thought stuff it, might as well get a matching set. Got everything except for EGT and wideband (I'll be getting something a bit more accurate for tuning purposes). I went for the 60mm as they have peak and hold as well as warning lights. Should look alright tucked inside the scoop.

You will get your seat time in it, don't you worry about that. After all you inspired me to build this multi purpose monstrosity.

Am I only up to number 3 have a crack at it?
Im sure its more. :D

Yep the 5.0 gear is all tentatively sold. But as they say its not done until its in the dudes trailer and the pesos are in my hand.

Then it will be Barra time. Im putting the goo together this time more for touring instead of full on off road stuff a couple of hours from Sydney.

For this application the barra just makes a bit more sense.

Anyways I will stop clogging your good work up with my s**t.

Did you look at using a factory mailbox??
Looks like an XR8 style pod housing would fit. Would be easier to get the snorkel to fit, and look alot better.
Do the box in ally man!!!!
