Was trying to clip the injectors back in by putting the clips too high on the injector! Blonde moment.

Question: I see the an EF Fairmont Ghia grille is actually chrome under the paint. What is the best way to get the paint off without damaging the chrome underneath?

I had a spare EF Fairmont one here, with the grey insert.
I left it in oven cleaner overnight. The grey came off and its black now. Maybe it is chrome underneath that.... |

Just scraped a bit on my EF Ghia grill and it is definitely chrome under there - yay! Will chuck some oven cleaner on it and see what happens..... You know, this damn car will look better then mine. When I am done here I'll have to revisit the ED me thinks

Little more work done today (no pics yet).
Engine is 90% back together, just the alternator to clean and install. Then it will be time to attach the trans. Do need to grab the EF trans mount of the back of the old one though. Had fun timing it, first time for me doing an EF. As far as I know I have it right I also got the two rust repair spots ground and prepped for spray putty. One thing I think I will need to address (although I have no idea how to fix it yet) is to fix the connection to the power steering pump. The knuckle bit leaks a little around the joint, thats where all the pwr steering fluid went me thinks. The joint was damn tight in the pump but it still leaked Tomorrow I will clean the engine bay and do the spray putty bit. Once that is dry (both of them) Rach and I should be able to put the engine back in. Hoping that by late Sunday I can fire it, sometime after I get back from Woolongong with some XR6 springs for the beast Pics up tomorrow... Cheers RD

My AU had a similair problem stole some plumbers tape (that white stuff) wrapped around the fitting and then tightened hasn't looked it leaked.

Thanks matey, but it is not actually leaking through the thread. It is the knuckle kinda thing that is leaking. I really had to swing on the "nut" to get the it undone. Cheers RD

Cheers RD I know that leaking feeling so so well. Mine actually popped apart spewing hot fliud all over my impecable blue couch lawn shortly before the power steering pump started singing. Not a good feeling but it is repairable, you can buy replacement nuts with the teflon seal inside and the snap ring too from Ford for about $15. Just make sure that the groove on your hose fitting isn't worn as the whole exercise will be a waste of time. I ended up welding mine and re-filing a nice groove for my setup. |
