Well, RD, you didn't waste anytime getting a thread up.
I think it will tidy up nicely into a good daily driver for Rach. I may be able to pop over hand help with engine removal too depending on when. Cheers BenJ

I too think it will cleanup OK, in the light of day there are a few dings and paint issues but nothing that can't be overcome. Gave it a quick pressure wash today and got rid of the dust/dirt layer. Looks a bit better but the paint will need some more work. Help would be appreciated, the engine pull won't happen until next week sometime. Need to not only get rid of the EL, I need to prep the other engine Cheers RD

Ok, have determined that one of the noise coming for the engine bay is the air con compressor, sounds like a bearing gone with no oil when the a/c is off, fine when it is on.
Is it stuffed or is there something else I can do to salvage it? If it is stuffed, what do they cost or can I replace it with an EB one? Cheers RD

Hey RD.
The A/C compressor is unique to the EF/EL and you can't use an EB/ED one. Pick N Payless is probably his best bet for a replacement. If you get one that doesn't work from there, they should exchange it. BenJ

Will need to visit PnP anyway for some of the bits so what the hell, I'll see what they want for a compressor - ouch!

Starter pics
Generally the car is in not bad nick. Interior and suspension are good, body average, engine and trans sad. Overall shots: Looking a bit 4x4-ish at the moment. Superlow rears and Low fronts will be the order of the day once it is running and looking better. Yes that is a different wheel on the back, it is the spare. Body wise, the worst bits are the bonnet and the front bar: I have replacements for both of those coming next week. Anyone is welcome to buy the old ones if they want to do a cut job, see my for sale thread Interior is in nice nick, nothing to really do in here. The headlining is perfect: For some reason it has cappa lights in the roof. Doesn't matter, they will be replaced anyway. The only thing I need to do inside the car is free up the windows. The left rear needs assistance to go up and down. Will deal with those when I put the door ajar sensors in. Round the back, the boot could do with some TLC to see if I can get it back to a reasonable state: and the beaver panel (just found out what it's called! ) has had a ding somewhere along the line and the badge is missing: After I found out it can be replaced (der!), I bought a replacement for that too, complete with Ghia badge Drivers mirror has been snapped off at some point, again I have a replacement coming: Engine wise, it is grubby grubby and oily. As it will be coming out most of that is not an issue however the BBM etc will need some cleaning to make it look reasonable: There is bugger all rust in her except for spots under the bonnet!!! The worst of them is on the LH side up by the bonnet stay: And more on the other side and where the rad support meets the body: I am not sure how to deal with the rust just yet but will figure something out. Oh yea, the wiper arms are a bit sad, this one has oxidising all over it and the other one has really bad pitting. I have a couple of spares off the EL wagon that may clean up: Wheels are a bit sad, not sure what to do with them yet: And finally I need a replacement for the plastic shroud in front of the radiator support. I did notice yesterday that the ambient temp sensor is missing but I have a spare. Generally, all the body black bits will be painted etc and a general cleanup and check before getting a blue slip. Will probably replace all the brake pads and it needs wheel bearing too. So, nothing that can't be oversome with a little patience and TLC. I'm feeling crap at the moment, going downhill fast so nothing will be getting done for a few days. I would rather be in bed but the kids are home on school holidays Cheers RD

Well, to add some extra's to that to do list .
Driver's side Mirror Fairmont Coolant Bottle (I like low coolant sensor Bottle's ) I wonder if your gonna have to get a new/second hand rad support for your roadworthy? if you do, EVL (Matt) is your welding friend/expert . As for the Bonnet, is it chalking yet?

I already have those on my todo list Quote: I wonder if your gonna have to get a new/second hand rad support for your roadworthy? if you do, EVL (Matt) is your welding friend/expert . Hmmm, dunno on that one - have to find out from someone in the know.... Quote: As for the Bonnet, is it chalking yet? Probably was, has been sanded and at the corners (windscreen end) the paint is cracked. Will need stripping right back which is a task I am not capable of, especially the painting bit. Cheers RD

Amen to that Josh, her EB would require 300% more work to get it even close to this. Bummer is I spent a couple of hundred dollars on parts for the EB then I got this. Would be nice to get rid of some of it to finance this one but no-one seems to be buying these days...

I would try and see if NZEA was interested in the dash with the modified loom to suit the boxcar, I know sending it in to NZ would not be cheap but he still might be interested. Josh |
