Thanks guys...

First up, the coolant sensor is working now. One of the wires in the car side of the plug had popped out. Pushed it back in, inserted the little rubber bung and no more flashing - yay!

Hmmm, on the EF piping. Why I asked is the grommet holding the front and the little pin in the back of the main section over the rocker cover is broken. I suppose I'll just go off to PnP and get another one or grab one of someone that doesn't want theirs. The EL thing was a pure aesthetic choice and easier. If I have to buy one, I might as well buy the original, after all it is Rach's car not mine.....

The noises.... I replaced the PCV valve and it is a little better. Before I go off resetting base idle etc, I will get to the bottom of vacuum leaks as suggested. Will have to wait until someone else gets home so I can stick my head down there while the engine is turned on and off. One more thing on the starting subject, when it first fires it revs to about 2000 odd, drops back to 900-1000 and then in a while drops to 650-700. My EL doesn't do that so I know it's not normal :)

Cheers
RD

I am going to suggest that as you had the ECU unplugged, it is in learning mode, and may just settle down after a few days of normal use.

Hmmm, good point - never thought of that. Won't worry too much about the idle/start rev thing then until I have actually driven it down the road. Would like it sorted before the blue slip guys see it though....

Letting the engine cool down a little now so am off to install some springs....

Cheers

Well this car is certainly throwing up some challenges.....

Can anyone tell me if EF driveshafts are different to ED driveshafts? I ask because I have installed an ED transmission into this car and the original driveshaft WILL NOT go into the box. I can get an ED wagon knuckle end into the box, I can get the ED wagon knuckle end into the EF box. I can also get the EF driveshaft into the EF box but can I get the EF drivehaft into the ED box - NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any help/suggestions appreciated.

RD

With the funny idle, you can try cleaning the ISC as well, but you probably knew that.

I had a split in the rocker cover breather hose on mine. It made squeak, squeak sort of noises sometimes when it was idling or near idle, when I turned it off it made a long squeak for about 5 seconds. All gone when I changed the hose.

RD, they are all the same mate.

Must be a burr or something on the EF Yoke. Have a look/feel and see if it feels rough etc.

We put my old EB11 auto into SWCs EL wagon with no probs, and I had an EL tailshaft in the Red EB for a while too.

that is a weird one as aren't all auto and manual gearboxes interchangeable with all tailshafts?

Is it going in at all? or looks like it wouldn't fit?

Is there any dirt or s**t around the yoke or burr or slag?

Hold the phone guys.....

While lying under the car contemplating my naval because the f-en driveshaft won't go in, I noticed what I thought was dirt. Poked it and found massive rust directly behind the sills. There is no way in a month of Sundays that it would pass blue slip. Pics up soon after I have decided where this car is headed.

As for the driveshaft, inside the yoke is perfectly clean. It slips onto the old EF box perfectly, straight in. The ED wagon yoke slips straight in to the ED box in the car. The EF shaft goes in about 2 or 3 cm and stops, just like it is hitting something. Anyway, that may be by the by soon......

Rust pics...

Passenger side, directly behind the sill on the LH side front door:

Drivers side in exactly the same place:

My big problem is I do not have the resources or knowhow to fix this. It seems pretty bad and I suspect the further I dig the worse it will get. Deperessing? s**t yea........

We can give it a crack mate but no guarantees.
That is a real downer.

Thanks matey but I wouldn't even know where to start  After a bit more digging I got this:

LH side - the problem as I see it here is the crossmember, looks like rust heads that way. EDIT: There is also another patch towards the rear that is just starting to break out......
Image

RH side
Image

On both sides it is ingrained into the joint at the bottom. I had a quick look at the EL and it seems sound (and actually has drain holes in this area!) but getting it out of there and into the EF would be the issue.

All work on this car has now ceased until someone can assure me that this is fixable or is a complete waste of time. I can tell you Rach is a little depressed at the moment, she was so looking forward to this car and now this.

Oh, and while I was under there.... this is as far as the driveshaft will go into the box....

I know its more money and heartache but maybe this would be a good base.

He has been trying to offload it for a while , maybe you could squeeze him down somewhat?

Build one car up out of the both and have a fire sale on the rest of the stuff?

Would love to do that but I just don't have the money unfortunately, if I had it I would jump at it (after checking for rust that is!). Besides that I don't see Rach going for it either but I could be wrong. The current EF was supposed to be the end of it seeing I convinced Rach that the whole car was not much more then getting a screen replaced on her EB.

Well back to square one with what you have got.
What is the body like on the EB? Is it worth building a sedan clone of the wagon?

OHHHH s**t!!!!

That sucks big time.

Wow, I just don't know what to say.

I guess it is feasible to attack it with a grinder, and weld a plate back in there. That is how the boys do it when restoring the old cars. A bit of paint, and no one would know.
