Oh, and while I am on things not going right with this car....
On the weekend I picked up some EF XR6 springs for it and yesterday I installed the rears. Something is not right.... The bottom of the spring does not sit into the mount all the way. I am hoping that the bottom rubber bit is different in the EF XR6 (read taller) or these bottom rubber bits are stuffed and I can still use the springs. Anyone knowledgeable on this subject, please chime in as I am sick of wasting money on purchases these days..... Both sides are the same which I why I am thinking it's not the springs.... Cheers RD

With the weight on it, it should be fine RD.

XR6 diffs are rolled forward a bit, because of the shorter upper arms.
But they'll be right when the weight of the car is on them.

Phew, thanks guys.
My only concern is when it is lifted for blue slip, they may see they aren't sitting right. Would it be advisable at some point to get XR6 upper arms as well just to counteract this? Cheers RD

To me it looks like the travel on the shocks is a bit too long in the stroke and at full hang it is letting the spring slightly dislodge from the retainer.
Wont cause any real issues apart from it possibly letting the shock bottom out on hard bumps. Are you using the standard Fairmont shocks bruce or a XR set? Are the shocks listed different between Fairmont and XR anyone?I thought with the XR springs being a slightly lower spring and more sports orientated that the shocks would have a shorter stroke/different valving then plush comfortable Fairmont ones. Same thing happened to our old EL Fairmont when I lowered it until I got around to doing shocks.

Dont worry about getting a new tailshaft Bruce. We can make one up out of the bits and pieces you have kicking around there.
You just need to get a couple of new uni joints. About $25 each. Good insurance and something that wont have to be done again for quite some time. Get some joints , brings the shafts over to the driveway of hell and we shall knock you one up. When do you want to do it?

I have a spare sedan tailshaft RD can borrow for the interim. I also have some unused new Uni Joints too.

I did actually compare the standard springs and the XR springs side by side and the XR's are physically different at the lower end. The coils are closer together on the XR's versus the standards which is causing the lifting. I would say this was done due to the way the XR diff mounts in the car. {USERNAME} wrote: Dont worry about getting a new tailshaft Bruce. Matt, I would like to make sure the rust fix is happening before doing anything else. In no hurry for a shaft but will definitely take you up on the offer! I'll chuck the EB yoke on the EF shaft and all should be well with the world Ben, thanks for the offer but the stuffed EB shaft in it at the moment is fine for moving it around... Now, the rust.... I managed to get the car onto ramps for a little more room. So far I have attacked the RH side and cleaned it up a little with a rotary wire brush, dremel and angle grinder. This shot show how big it actually is The inner panel towards the front of the hole is pitted quite badly but some rust arrestor all over it and inside the cavity should halt it for a while. I have a little more digging and extracting of rust bits to do on this side before moving over the the LH side. In my uneducated opinion things are looking OK on this side, time will tell on the left. Cheers RD

In my uneducated opinion, that rust looks so repairable it isn't funny (well on that side so far) looks like to me that another hit with wire-brush attachment some rust kill and and a coat of paint and a some metal replaced on the hole.

Thanks Paul
I can tell ya that Rach is smiling more now than when I first sent her pics of the rust. Here's hoping the LH side comes up good, hopefully the rain will stay away long enough tomorrow so I can get into it... Cheers RD

Rust update - LH side..
The rain stayed away long enough and the Lemsip kicked in which allowed me to get under the car to attack the LH side rust patch. After a little while I ended up with these... On the "front" one, where is meets the small crossmember, it looks to be mainly surface and the metal seems to be OK. To be honest, I would be quite happy to use rust kill in the area and then plate over the top to save the car. The "rear" one is just starting to come through and I would probably cut the whole rectangular piece out to remove it all. A couple more showing size and relationship: I could really do with a smaller grinder, somewhere between my 4" and the dremel to get right up into the very front of the big one - don't have a compressor though which would be perfect. Sitting back waiting now for the knowledgeable ones to give their opinions.... and the rain has returned once more so I think I am done for the day.... Cheers RD

Beofe I can give my uneducated opinion mate I just need to ask if the rusted plate we can see behind where you have cut out , is it directly below the B pillar?
By the looks of it it seems to be where the pillar is mounted to the sill rail.

No, not the B pillar. This is all just behind the wheel well. Both sides are pretty well inline with the door mirrors/hinges.....
