Thanks Paul and others.... that timing suits me perfectly as not only am I currently carrying a head cold/flu, the car is sitting in a mud swamp that is my backyard at the moment. I need to clear my driveway, get the car off the lawn and then back up the driveway. Once there I can do the front suspension (wheel bearings and springs), put the gaurds, lights, bumper etc back on and clear out the interior in preparation for the welding. While I have the carpet out I can run wires for the door ajar sensors (still to be procured).

I will put the car back up on ramps for the welding but I suspect it may need to go a little higher for comfort. Problem is I only have a baby jack so if someone has a proper one it may come in handy :)

Rach is offering a BBQ lunch for those that turn up to show her appreciation for the work on her car. She is so happy now the repairs are going ahead.

What do I need to do to prepare for the job in terms of panel steel and cleanup? I would like to have as much done as possible to make the job easier. I will be making cardboard templates for the patches to ease creation....

Cheers
RD

I would love to be able to assist RD and SWC with the repairs. I can supervise along with the best of them. Will even bring my own comfy chair.

I have the rather large trolley Jack here mate that I use to jack the Mav up so I reckon it will do the monty.
Also have some chassis stands so all involved can get a clear run underneath with access and for the height.
Im not coming to help you out because Im a nice bloke or nothing its just the offer of a BBQ lunch is way too good to refuse!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Working on the front end today and found a whole heap of things that need replacing. Bit of a bugger but at least the car should last for years with new bits.

What I need is:

Upper ball joints - pair (found on ebay for $42.00 + postage)
Lower ball joints - pair (found on ebay for $42.00 + postage)
Tie rod ends - pair (found on ebay for $35.00 + postage)
Brake pads - set of 4 (found on ebay for $59.00 + postage)
Wheel bearings (already have)

First up, are those prices good?

Secondly, removing the steering arm, ie getting the lower ball joint out - whats the trick? I have a tie rod end splitter, would I use this on the lower joint as well? (I think it will fit) And where would be the best place to get the new ball joints pressed in, local garage?

One tie rod end looks OK but I'll change both to be consistent.

Bushes in there look OK to me, maybe the work crew could take a squiz when they are here to confirm.

Work Day
Hey work crew :) Are we aiming for Saturday June 6?

Cheers
RD

Just rang Bursons... they quoted $238.00 for all items. The ebay crowd are $178.00 + postage. Anyone got anything better? :)

All removed now, the tie rod taper breaker worked a treat. Having them out makes it a whole lot easier to get to the struts too!

Going to check the local garage to see if they can do the new ball joints, pressing them in that is...

Oh, and the ebay stuff has a total postage of $15.00 making a grand total of $193.00 vs Bursons quote at $238.00. Might as well save $40.00 me thinks....

Cheers
RD

Wow, thanks matey. Found them and it is so much cheaper - top and bottom ball joint kit $55.00, tie rod ends $20.00. Just need brake pads now :)

IIRC my sets (2 x upper + 2 x lower)were around the $50 mark last year from them. The wagons done around 10k km with them - I'd remove the boot and repack them with something decent like graphite grease - just don't overpack them.
Might be an idea to replace the radius rod bushes with the Superpro items - if your rubber items are okay in all other areas, you won't find a huge improvement with replacement, but you will find with the RR's the rubber items do have a large movement flex, which is greatly reduced with the Superpro items.

Thanks Ray

I'll find the superpro RR bushes and do them too, might as well while I am under there.

BTW, what do you guys usually get charged to remove and press the new ball joints in in? Just want a ballpark to see if my local guys are trying to rip me off....
