I have been quoted anything from $10 to $50 a ball joint to remove and replace them, and that is if I give them the upright, already removed from the car.

That would be with supplying the joints yourself mate.
They are a prick of a job. Very fiddly to get setup in the press right and you need a lot of grunt to get them in and out. I know the ones on our EL took 11tonnes of pressure to get out and around 14 to get them to go in.

Well if i am quoted $50.00 to get each one done, the car is going to be off the road for a while then. Struggling now just to buy the damn bits.......

That price is enough to put any one off doing them! I've heard you can get exchange uprights too, someone is getting me a price.....

Certainly pays to have mates with presses then. I had to do the lower ball joints on both sides and I did them myself at the mates workshop for didly squat. I can't believe the prices going around.

Amen to press access.
Use a benchgrinder to put a slight chamfer on the ball joint splines before installing them - makes it a bit easier. The original ford fitted ball joints take a fair bit of pressure to get out. {USERNAME} wrote: {USERNAME} wrote: Might be an idea to replace the radius rod bushes with the Superpro items Terminology clarification....Radius Rod = lower control arm strut = strut bar ??????? You're not wrong guys about having press access, would make life so much easier! I haven't speeched up anyone I know yet about a press, maybe I should before doing it commercially.... if I find someone I'll be bugging you guys on the method
Thanks snap for the clarification, I'll price those 2 kits and see if they fall into the budget. Just on the control arm bush, aren't the originals buggers to get out? Never done one so don't know.... Cheers RD

The radius rod to lower control arm is reasonably easy. Cut the rubber lip and press it out in a vice - use an oversized socket.

Good to see you've got nearly everything sorted out now RD.
That rust is no biggy under car mate, as stated just neutralise it and make some new pieces up and weld in, give it a bit of a grind and spray with sound deadener. Spraying fish oil inside sills is good idea also Mmmmm BBQ lunch - i'm starting to wish i lived in Sydney again now
