Ben kindly dropped over another BEM and we chucked it in but it made no difference to what wasn't working. So I stuck the original back in and we went through a checklist. No spark, no fuel pump prime and parts of the dash light circuit not operational. Went off to the fusible link section to trace a few things and a thought occurred. The fuel pump relay should click if it has power......off with the water res and found that the ECU relay cover had been cracked. Thinking that is may be the root of all evil, it was whacked and the fans came back on when the ignition was switched on. Ign off again, #1 plug back in, ign on again and nothing. At this point Ben had to go home so as he drove away I gave the realy a bloody hard whack. Turn the key and.... bingo! Fires up.....

So the problem is the main ECU relay under the water reservoir, I must have bumped it when I put the battery back in. Being dodgy, it crapped out causing the problem. I'll replace it now and see what happens.......

Lights/cc/trip comp will be low due to the battery being removed. Use the interior light switch to bring them back up.
Turn fully to left til they just about disappear, then turn to right and they will increase in brightness. Release switch at desired level.
Hope that helps
Brett

Thanks for the info Brett, never knew that! Once I have the dash all back together again I will adjust as indicated.

Cheers
Bruce

Low batt charge usually dims the LCD displays as well.
Earth the top right diag connector, turn on IGN - fuel pump should run. This tests the fuel pump relay and the ECU relay and the wiring.

Another handy hint, thanks Ray! Good to know if this sort of thing happens in the future...

I just moved the inspection to Monday. Installing the spare relay I had in did not work so I need to visit PnP to gather some more. Add that to the things to be done plus putting everything back together, plus deal with the kids on school holidays is just too much to do by 8:00am tomorrow morning. So now I have the weekend to finish up and tie up any loose ends, plus Rach can wash it and make it look presentable.

So close yet so far.....

Getting closer now....

Interior all back together (again!) after my foray into BEM changing. Oh and Ben, I found out why the antenna went up and down with the key and no radio... someone has (had) hardwired it to do so, bypassing the switch. I rerouted the wiring to where it should be and the antenna now doesn't go up and down although I had the original Ford radio in there and it was asking for a code. I'll go get one of those test lights we were discussing and see if I have power in the right places and also install Rach's stereo.

Underbody sealing all done, just waiting for the RH side to dry. The LH side is all dry (done yesterday) and was filled with fish oil before putting the bungs back in.

So all thats left now is to:

Swap driveshafts between the EF & the EB. I am hoping that the old EF driveshaft will go into the EB but I am not holding my breath on that one seeing as it won't go into an ED box. If thats the case, I'll do the changeover late Sunday as I need the EB on the road until then.

Change over the the wheels to give me 4x standard 15" EL wheels with Futura trims. For that I will need an additional 12 wheel nuts. For now I will install them with 2 nuts per wheel so they are at least done.

Replace the main ECU relay. This will happen, along with the wheelnuts, once I visit PnP on the weekend (or maybe tomorrow if I can get the kids looked after).

After that, it is up to Rach to clean inside and out ready for Monday morning. Between now and then I will take it for a short road test to check out the brakes etc including handbrake. Any adjustments needed will be done before Monday.

Off to the library now with the kids and when I get back the underseal should be dry enough to do the fish oil and install the bungs.....

Cheers
RD

Engine number question.....

As far as I know (but totally uneducated) the blue slip guys will check the engine number. I found the stamping on the old engine - exhaust side, just above the sump, stamped into the block. However, there is nothing on the engine that I put in. Where else should I be looking for a stamped number on the block?

I *think* the replacement is an EF engine, when I got it it had the EF harmonic balancer on it. Any assistance in finding where the engine would be would be helpful

Cheers
RD

there is two spots if i cal recall. one on a flat surface at the rear of the motor near the exhause manifold and another spot up the front located near or under the powersteering pump. (well these are are only two different spots I have seen in that last 2 years working in auto dismatnling area.

Well found out just now that an EF driveshaft will NOT fit into an EB or an ED trans. Just tried putting the EF shaft into Rachs old EB and it does exactly the same as the ED box in the EF - it goes in about 2cm and stops, never to go any further. The *really* strange thing is that an EL wagon shaft will fit all models - EB, ED, EF & EL whereas the EF shaft will only fit EF, EL.

This is where things get on the wrong side of fun. I have to take the driveshaft out of the EB and install it into the EF for blue slip. The stuffed driveshaft I am taking out will go into the EB so it is mobile. However, due to the $750+ bill for registration we will not be registering the EF (that is if it gets a blue slip) until the week after next. So that means I have to pull the driveshaft back out of the EF to put in back into the EB so I can use the EB for a week and a half, at which time I do it all again!!! Ho hum.....

I may be able to help there, as i have an EF Alloy shaft i am not in need of use for a while, would you like to borrow it, needs to come out of the blue car. But it would be a loner. And it is for a V8 EF

HI Brett

That would be bloody handy although I am wary of EF driveshafts :) I have an ED box on the beast which is causing all these dramas. But then again, no harm in trying - push comes to shove I can always do my epic above. If it all works out I can rebuild the stuffed EB driveshaft with new uni's while I have yours in there. I'll PM you for details...

Cheers
Bruce

After all this prattling on I thought I would chuck up some shots of how it sits right now. Aside from the driveshaft and ECU relay, I have a number of smallish things to do once a blue slip has been attained. They include a clean and polish, reviving the bonnet & boot, refitting the roof racks after a little repair, refitting the factory mudflaps, installing the stereo out of the EB and figuring out the electric aerial. After these things I will dress up all the black window surrounds, fit the NL Fairlane dome light I have and fit the NL Fairlane cluster and associated accessories. Anyway, enough waffling again, here's the pics.....
