Well that wouldn't be good.....

This thing just did another estrange thing....

1 hour after Rach got home tonight, it wouldn't start - nothing, nada, zippo when you turn the key, just like it wasn't in park. Trying everything was still no help. 5 minutes with the ignition left on and suddenly it starts. This is definitely not good for her car.......have yet to get to the bottom of it.

I'd try another coilpack if you have a spare.

With the stereo, check the antenna output on the deck with a multi-meter and work from there. Also make sure the antenna switch is plugged into the right connector, there are a few plugs around there that interchange.

As for the startring, sounds like the BEM. Are you aware of the problems they often have? If it does it again, give it a smack under the BEM while you crank the igntition. Could also be the inhibitor switch, try giving the shifter a wiggle, perhaps take it in and out of park, or try in neutral instead.

Goodluck!

Thanks matey

Don't have a spare coilpack - hate the things. Will have to get one of those :)

I am hoping it isn't the BEM, this is the second one I have had in there. And that fact is the reason I am leaning away from that and looking towards something else. I did think of the inhibitor, in fact I ran through the gears a few times, wiggled it, banged it etc and no difference.

All of this seems very strange and intermittent, which make it all the harder to diagnose.....

The plot thickens.....

Took the car to Hungry Jacks tonight and on the way back noticed that the right side speakers aren't working - left's fine. Add to this the headlights will just go out when on full beam!!!

I can't have Rach driving this thing for now so I have an incentive to get to the bottom of it - she will be driving my ED until it is fixed.

I have a feeling that the dash wiring is compromised in some way which could be the root of everything that is going wrong, including starting. My first task will be to source replacement wiring for the dash and go from there. When it has cooled off a little I will remove the dash and see that the story is (if I can).

Ho bloody hum....

RD

2 issues sorted today...

Speakers - replaced them and the sound on the RH side is back. Seems someone has been beating their stereo to death :)

Headlights going out: Turned out to be a faulty relay. Replaced that and it seems to be OK.

Still not sorted:

Antenna up and down via radio - being worked on as we speak. I let a little of the blue smoke out while doing this but all seems to be OK :)

Starting when hot - haven't even breached this one yet.

Cheers
RD

Spoke too soon on the headlights, replacement relay does the same thing. Only on high beam, only after a few minutes on high beam, the relay start "arcing" and the headlights flash on and off. Go back to low beam, it goes away and works normally.

Back to the drawing board, now suspecting indicator stalk....

Oh, and the headlights are crap - someone, somewhere along the line, adjusted them completely wrong: they are all over the bloody place. Need to source a couple more for comparison and possible replacement.

Pull the CRT LP fuse - if starter now motors, BEM is sus possibly, if starter still doesn't motor, most likely inhibitor, or possibly ign switch.

Short out the Cct breaker under the coolant recovery tank - if prob disappears, you know what to do . . . .

Thanks snap

I'll try that out tomorrow with the CRT LP fuse. Hope it isn't the BEM, thats the one I got from SWC...

As for the relay, I assume you are talking about the one closest to the front gaurd, the other two are ECU (Green) and Fuel Pump (Brown) aren't they? The relay that is doing the arcing is the 2nd (or 3rd) one from the headlight next to the battery - thats the one I replaced this avo.
