Thought I would start this off seeing as I am now not doing anything to Rach's EB S Pac. I picked up an EF Fairmont for her as I was feeling lazy (no major interior mods to do) and it was better to have a spare car to work on rather than rush with one of our cars off the road. I did say to her that this would be a good parts car for my ED wagon but I got the look of death for that comment :)

Anyway, got a '96 EF Mont with 250K-ish k's on the clock.

Engine and trans have seen better days but I already have a replacement "set" here that will go in. The engine that came out of my ED was actually an EF that I put a log manifold onto (mentioned in her now cancelled EB thread) and that will be repatriated with EF bits like the BBM, coil packs etc. It will get new gaskets and welch plugs before transplant. At least I can paint the rocker cover now and it will be an EF one :) The trans going in is a late ED version with a dipstick (yay!!).

The body needs some TLC and I will either try and paint the bonnet or grab another one from somewhere in the right colour (N9 Color Code). Also need a front bar as the one on it is cracked and is missing the lower separator (or whatever you call it) between the small outer grills.

Interior is smick, no problems there.

Overflow bottle has been replaced at some stage with a GLi version - no low level sensor.

For now, the planned inclusions are:

NF Fairlane cluster. Luckily the one I got is with a couple of 000 K's of the car itself!
NF Fairlane dome light - need to paint grey

I have both of these so it is a no brainer.

Tyres are stuffed, need a set of 15's for the standard wheels.

Later wants:
Low springs - front
Super Low springs - rear
16 or 17" wheels
All around tint.

Immediate work that needs doing:

Get some fluid into the damn trans so I can reverse the car up the driveway. At the moment reverse engages but has no drive. Trans is real low on fluid so I am hoping that by adding some I can get it to go backwards.

Bloody good clean on the outside to see what it looks like underneath and what needs to be done.

Prep the spare engine to go in.

Once up the driveway backwards, pull the engine & trans.

Front wheel bearings - both sides.

First question:

I know the EL's got thicker windows - are EF windows then the same as EB? Just that I have some already tinted windows in the EB and want to know if I can chuck them in this....

Second question:

What would be gained by throwing an EF Ghia BEM & ECU into this car? Just need to know if it is worth eventually sourcing these things.

Thats it for now. Pics up tomorrow.

Cheers
RD

Oh, and Third Question:

Will an EB towbar fit an EF?

RD, EF Fairmont and Ghia have the same grill and bonnet. Bonnet is also the same on an EL Mont or Ghia.

As for the BEM, the BEM between a Fairmont and Ghia will be the same too. There are the low, mid and high series. Gli got low, Futura/XR got Mid, Fairmont and Ghia got high series.

ECU Will be a different story. An EF Ghia Series 1 ECU I think is different but I'm not sure how. The S2 ECU will have speedo calibration for the 3.45 diff, and slightly more agressive fuel and spark maps for the Tickford head. Not sure if it will help on a stock motor.

Anyway, nice pickup!

Excellent, thanks matey. This is the first non-boxcar we have owned so new things are there to be learnt.

Good news on the BEM and ECU, saves me even thinking about needing them. As this is Rach's car there is not need for aggressive fuel maps etc, she drives to the speed limits 99% of the time - a good citizen you might say :)

I think this thing will clean up pretty good, Rach won't mind me working on it as she wants to drive it!!

Cheers
RD

Nice work Bruce. N9 is Navy Blue.
Same colour as my Missus old EL monty was.
Here is a few pics of it for some inspiration for you.

Why did we sell it? I ask myself the same question. I was allowed to keep it as a toy but I thought I would be responsible and not have 3 lots of rego and insurance.
Well what do we now have. 2 4x4's , a s**t and 3 lots of rego and insurance!
Yes I am an idiot!

Ok guys, exactly what size is the filler bolt on an EF II transmission? Want to get a couple of litres of fluid into it to see what happens. Hate these transmissions, want a dipstick back.....

Ah, stuff it. I'll just pull the engine/trans out on the uphill part of the driveway. Gonna need help with that one but so be it!

Need to get rid of the EL wagon first, more room to move. Needs K frame & diff to roll on and doors to keep the crap in :) Most of this will happen by Monday next :)
