fiend wrote: Four pin plug wouldn't be an airbag thing... Hmmmph. Four pin plug by the bem? Only button there is to activate central lock, try that! I have all the plugs for the airbags, they are all on the loom that runs under the screen. The GLi has the same plug so whatever it is for neither car had it fiend wrote: Doesn't the clock and the trip computer use the same plug, just wired differently? You could just insert some pins into the clock plug that I presume you already have and connect to the new loom? Trick is there is no plug at all! Thanks, looks like I will need it with this project.....

BenJ Hi matey That would be helpful if you have time. As for the vac pipe, according to the tech docs sniffer motors are only used in EA-ED's so the EL shouldn't even have one.. Quote: 7. The Cabin Temperature Sensor, or also called the Sniffer Motor. (Required for EA-ED Models)
I am going to try and get out to Pnp today and see where it goes on the car.... Cheers RD

Those bulb holders are for the footwell lights. One screws in next to the bonnet realease, the other under the glovebox. Thanks dan1_721, I hope that too! I found that the bulbs were as you have said. When I installed the wiring to the dash they just "fell into place". One positive is that I won't have to do that mod! Cheers RD

BenJ Ben me ole mate, I bow to your superior knowledge. That spare vac line does indeed run to the rear of the CC head unit. I just got back from PnP and brought the rest of the line back as well as an EF vacuum control. Me thinks that the tech docs need updating to state that this extra vacuum line is also required for EF/EL's. Banarcus, you will be happy to know that I can now back you up with a blue EF vacuum control, that what I have in my hot little hand after removing it from an EF Fairmont. While I was at PnP I also got a good chunk of wiring for various bits like the door ajar sensor plugs, the trip computer plug and a real 12 & 16 pin plug for the cluster. Now all I have to do is find my damn soldering iron! As you can probably tell, I am in a better mood today. It is amazing what some sleep can do... Cheers RD

Well the heater box is now 95% ready to go in. I have all the climate control stuff attached in their proper positions and have some high density foam coming home with Rach to redo the various bits that have fallen apart.
One hiccup though the the freshair vent arm which has broken off. I am currently devising a way to fix it but if that doesn't work I will see how the ED's one is, hopefully that won't have broken off. With the foam, Rach aksed for a 600x600 piece and they wanted $30.00!!!! bugger that, so she spied some offcuts in nearly the same size and got those for $5.00 - go figure!!!! Cheers RD

Well, last night I decided to solder the plug on for the trip computer. All went well, nice joints, all "shrink wrapped" and pretty. Put the dash facia together and the bloody cables were too short to get to the TC! Bugger! I cut the plug off again and will today solder it back on with longer tails!!! The thiings you learn

January 23, 2009 - 7:45pm the saga starts. The ED is now in position and the tear down is in progress. My darling wife Rach is going to pull the dash out after dinner as I kick off the engine removal.
Today I pressure washed the K frame, diff and engine/trans in preparation for fitting over the coming days. I will update the thread at the end of each day to relay progress. Pics up soon of how the ED looks now, before it becomes and EL hybrid. Cheers RD

Pics of the pretty much bog standard ED GLi wagon:
The changes from rock stock have been the addition of the EL wagon taillights, a chrome grille and a NL Fairlane dome light. Everything else about the car is stock....oh, that is aside from the current engine which is an EF with log manifold etc as detailed in this thread a while ago. The only real mod that has been done up to this time is the addition of the EL sub tunnel and seat mounts detailed earlier. Now, this is what is destined for the car over the coming 4 days. All going well I hope to fire it back up on Tuesday afternoon. Wishful thinking? Maybe but we shall see. EL Diff: EL K frame complete: and EL engine & trans with 133,000K: ...plus a whole lot more, basically everything there is to be had from the EL wagon. As the ED stands now the dash is 90% removed (just the wiring to be disconnected), the front gaurds are off as is the front bar. Ran out of light so back into it early tomorrow morning.... Cheers RD

Oh, and while I am talking to myself , I did a ring around of a couple of suppliers before buying my oil pressure sender for the EL. Bursons couldn't supply, Autopro didn't have any but could get one for $90.00 (!!!) and the local Ford dealer had 3 on the shelf at $65.15. Of course I grabbed the Ford one.
While I was there I priced the low coolant sensor. Ford had 3 on the shelf at $69.99 but of course I didn't buy one - don't have the rest of the hardware for the bottle so no sense. I'll just grab a bottle one day from PNP and change the sensor over

$25 from wrecker for the oil pressure sender - I have three, all failed due to the bloody long reach socket I was using being too narrow and snapping the plastic housing (detailed explanation available upon request)
Hope you get it all in - four days sounds do-able if you know what you're doing and have some help (which is two things more than me......) |

Thought of doing the wrecker thing but there was no guarantee that it would work. New, it was cheap enough so am happy with that plus being able to fit it while the engine is out of the car. As for four days, I'm now thinking longer. Stinking hot day here in Rivo (42+) so the engine didn't get out although it is ready to go. Don't have anyone to help really, just for things like physical engine out and in (the heavy bit ) and maybe the diff swap (the heavy bit). The kids and Rach can do basic stuff (trim etc) but it is mostly me doing the bulk of the work. This project is different than most, no pretty lights in the doors, just a major upgrade of everything mechanical, electrical and body - not much really

So, an update while I am stuck inside.
This is how the project sits at the moment: The engine is 99% ready to come out with just the trans lines at the trans, the LH engine mount and 3 hoses to disconnect. It just got too damn hot to continue (for me at least). I already forsee a couple of issues with this transformation. For example, these holes in the EL: do not exist in the ED: and I will need to locate a 65mm hole saw from somewhere for the big one. The EL's front loom comes through this hole and feeds all the relays, battery, lights etc. I also need a 25mm hole saw for the handbrake cable hole in the floor as I want to do it properly and include the grommet. I will be continuing when the sun goes down, or at least behind the trees. Hopefully by dark the engine/trans will be out. After I set up my flood lights I should be able to get the K frame out tonight as well. Cheers RD

Alrighty, the old EF engine is out and is destined for my wife's EB. Next on the list is the K frame once the car is down off the ramps.
Updates as they happen. Cheers RD
