Got my replacement bits today - got a bumper and 2 front guards from an ED Ghia (no badges, they were missing already). This car had a perfect bonnet as well except some moron bent it at the drivers side rear. Bumper is in far better nick than mine currently is, only problem is one of the chrome strips is missing. Got the guards as mine are a little bent from the front wheels picking up the inside lip. Also got a bonnet from an ED Fairmont along with the grill from the Ghia (did a swap while I was there) - all in Cardinal Red. Oh, and for some reason I didn't get charged for the bumper so I saved $80.00 there :) And lastly got another RH headlight as mine has lost all it reflective coating.

Will fit all this in the coming days, might either get the replacement guards rolled or try doing it myself. I also need to remove the pin stripes from them and get rid of whats left of the badges. I understand I need something like eucalyptus oil or something, yea?

Cheers

So I fitted all the replacement parts today but have one problem. The bonnet won't fully latch. I suspect something in there got bent when he backed into me. I tried tweaking the latch and it either won't let the bonnet go down any further than the first stop or it does go all the way but won't latch down there. I am gonna pull the latch out tomorrow to try and see what's going on.

Aside from that setback, the front looks better than it did....

Cheers
RD

And I have all of those things :) Prior to trying to rip the rad support out of the car, I'll check the latch is working properly

In the past I have been able to space the latch forward a few mm by using some washers between the latch and the rad support.

Good plan, will post the results tomorrow. The sweet spot must be somewhere inbetween the two places I have tried so far.

So, if Snap's reading this I am hoping he can throw some light on this subject....

Ok, my ariel would not go down as in the mast. The motor would do it's thing but without moving the mast up and down. While I had the LH guard off I decided to pull the ariel unit out and diagnose what the problem could be. What I found was the toothed belt wasn't attached in any way inside the spooling unit (no idea what it is really called) and I could see no way that it actually could do that. So I removed the motor and rewound the belt and mast all the way down and then put it all back together again.

I haven't tested it yet but I suspect it will do the same thing it did before that is after extending the mast it would again not retract it.

Snap me ole mate, how are these things supposed to work? Keen to learn incase anything like this happens again.

Oh, and I *still* haven't got the bonnet to close, its really pissing me off now....

Cheers
RD

Now I know why the bonnet isn't closing, the rad support *is* bent slightly, just enough to make the bonnet catch hit the panel. So it will be everything out of the front of the car and to figure out how to get the panel back into line. I would say between 5 and 10mm inwards at the centre of the radiator. Hmmm, pain in the proverbial......

Worked out it wasn't actually the rad support bent inwards, it was bent slightly down. After some bending and tweaking I got the bonnet to close all the way - yay me! :) I also bought some AU clear side indicators but they don't fit, broke one putting it in. Seems the AU didn't have that bloody great hunk of plastic on the guard like the E series and I didn't think of checking first. Oh well, they were only $16.00.

On another note, I bought an AU-1 Fairmont Ghia on ebay for under $500.00. Deciding what to do with it now. It's got 10 days rego left so I'll take it for a pink slip to see what needs fixing. She is a VCT/IRS with traction control and electric drivers seat, 235K. Very very tired in alot of respects (waddy expect for under $500) but hell, do they drive nice :) TC and ABS lights are on permanently, I have an bluetooth readr on its way from ebay to diagnose what the issue may be. More later when I find out more about its mechanical state from the pink slip.

Cheers
RD

Well, I will now be retiring the wagon, the truck dude DID bend the rad support. My RH headlight is about 5 to 10mm back from the edge of the bonnet. It will be a parts gopher and general transport now, no more goodies installed at all.

The AU will be roadworthied, failed a few things in the pink slip, and my daughter will use that for learning to drive and maybe take over later down the track. One day I will get another wagon of some description, I do like my wagons but just cannot justify spending more money on the ED.

So, another wagon bites the dust...

Cheers
RD
