Bit the bullet and got a new harmonic balancer.
What is this gear looking thing for? Extra balancing?

the gear is the EDIS [Electronic Distributorless Ignition System] trigger wheel.
the sensor that sits above it reads when to fire spark. |

I have a few tips.
1-When you remove it with the puller, do it with the crank bolt still in place, just loosened. This way the puller pushes off the bolt, instead of forcing its way into the thread in the crankshaft. You will have to keep removing the puller and loosening the bolt more as the pulley slides off. 2-Once you have the old crank bolt removed, go and find a longer bolt with the same thread . You can use the longer bolt to pull the new balancer onto the crankshaft, then once its on a reasonable way use the original bolt. This is because the original bolt isn't long enough to do so. I don't recommend hammering the new balancer onto the shaft, you may damage something. Obviously being a manual makes it alot easier, just put the box into 3rd. With an auto you would have to take out the starter motor and jam the trans up so the motor can't turn over! I also reccomend pulling the radiator out first, in case you are clumsy like me and damage it. When I did mine, I pulled it out, but then dropped a wrench on it and killed it anyway  Have fun. |

Never hurts to ask, I always have to ask dumb questions
 Take the bolt out and take it to your local fasteners store. They will be able to sort you out. Or just go to any hardware or auto store, go to the bolt section and put your crank bolt into a thread tester. Find which one it is, buy a longer version. I had a thread when I did the same job. ford-4l-and-6-cylinder-f1/removing-el-harmonic-balancer-bolt-sizes-t93545-20.html CJH added that a VR/VS Commodore front strut to stub axle mount bolt is the right thread pitch, width and length. Have a look, there is a picture too. |

Cheers mate. I wasn't aware there was a seal so I guess that'll be on the cards just need muster one up. I take it the seal has a lip on it of course?
so tools on the list are: balancer puller, Hammer (joke), longer bolt (M10, 1.5mm pitch, 75mm long), something to tap the seal back in. Some grease or that Grey Maxx stuff... Am I forgetting anything?

Should be about it. I used a fence post cap to fit over the seal to push it in. Check the serp belt while you are in there, it has to come off anyway so you may as well throw in a new one if it needs it.

Serp belt looks in pretty good condish. Don't know how old it would be but I was told the head ghasket was fairly recent so I dare say it would have been replaced then. Cyl head is VERY clean and I notice new manifold gaskets. Think I got myself a good motor
I'll see what it's like first and check the other on the old ef. Damn it's depressing seeing the car in it's current state in the shed...

does it have little screws or just double sided tape? double sided tape carefully/slowly peel it off then get some wax and grease remover. seems to be working ok on my ute after removing the side moulds.

Just double sided tape along the top and two tabs that hook on the window seal. The tape has half come up along the front. Just don't want to damage anything. I was thinkin about using a hair dryer to add a bit of heat to soften the glue bit then go from there...

Blocks out alot of wind noise. Replacing the balancer today. Wish me luck...
