My wagon has started backfiring again.... I picked up a good head last week for $57 so now I need a gasket set and some time to swap them over.

I need some advice. The EL has developed a bit of a problem. It seems to run ragged on LPG when it gets a bit hot. I'm told it does it of fuel too, but not all the time. It may be using a bit of water, probably a headgasket, but today it just stopped dead. It will crank over, but wont fire, on fuel or lpg. I'm thinking coil or TFI module might be the problem, but could there be something LPG-related that I'm missing?
Cheers. 8-)

Coil , TFI (do both at once). Whats the battery and alternator like? Our wags was running like a shower of s**t. Would run fine when driving but wouldnt idle , would ping under load etc and got worse when hot.
Found today in the heat when the volts guage dropped when the fans kicked in its started running crap. It appears that ECU's dont like running on 11 volts....................
New alternator and a fresh battery I had here and its now running the best it ever has since we got it.
After saying that it will now most likely explode.
Check the charging system. have had similar issues with a couple of cars and spent a mint to sort it out only to find it was an easy fix!

Thanks Matt, I was thinking the Coil and/or TFI module might be the issue. I will get new ones and see if that fixes it. It has a relatively new battery, and starts really easily, (when it wants too) but I havent checked the alternator. I'll add it to the list of things to do. Maybe a new, or bigger, earth cable would help too? Anything to avoid the dreaded voltage drop.
Mum took it to a workshop last week, but I bet they didnt check the voltage outputs...
Ah the joys of motoring.....

Update:
The RACQ guy checked it out last night, no output from the coil.

I have ordered a new coil and TFI module, and the alternator and battery will be tested once it's all back together. That should sort it out, until the next thing goes wrong.......

OK, a quick update.
Now that my Mum has retired and she longer needs to travel ridiculous distances to work (80ks each way!) she no longer wants the EL wagon. We are fixing up a '03 Mirage for her to drive, and once that's on the road, she will be giving me the EL back.
I've made an executive decision and decided to use the EL as our run around car, so I will rape the EF for it's better trim, etc and make one good wagon out of the lot. I simply do not have the time, or funds, at the moment to finish the EF properly. It is a really good shell, so i will probably strip it for parts, and sell it on as a rolling shell. I know it seems like a waste of all the time and effort i put in to repair it, but my current circumstances mean it;s the best I can do for now.

I'll post some more updates once the wagon is back in my hands again, and will show what will be happening as far as mods / updates go.

If anyone wants a good EF or EA wagon rolling bodyshell, I've good a good one of each that i'll sell cheap. :D

Cheers,
Grant.

Hi mate,
The EL wagon is still going OK. It's about to get a heart / lung transplant though. 8-)

I have a good, low K AU engine sitting here for it, and Ash Cook did me an awesome deal on an AU auto trans with only 66000klms on it! I will probably start on it this weekend, but i doubt i'll get it all finished till the following weekend. No hurry anyway. I'll get some more recent pics when i get a chance.

I fitted the full EF Futura interior just before Xmas, and generally gave it a big tidy up. With a wheel alignment and some new tyres it drives really nice. The trans has been slipping and clunking a bit, but the new trans will fix that.

Once the engine and trans are in and sorted i will have to try and get the LPG working again. I think the switch is the problem, but i'll work thru the system and see what i can do with it. Either that or i might update it to vapour injection...

Thanks for the interest - pic soon.
Cheers, 8-)

Go the vapour injection mate.
Once it is in and sorted you wont look back.

Oh, i know. :D
A mate scored the full setup off an AU, including tank, etc, for $200.00! And he reckons he can get me one for the same price, so fingers crossed it happens. 8-)
