Gave it a try when I got home form work this arvo and no cigar. Still a b**ch to start.....
I hooked up the scanner and found that the EGR was out of position and the purge canister had a faulty output. Also found it reckons the coolant sensor is out of range. Passed a cylinder balance test fine. I couldnt find anything amiss so I have reset the codes and will see how it goes. I am getting the 70mm TB tomorrow and a set of 24LBers so I shall fit them up and see where it goes. It has to be something so simple to be missing it. Starts fine when its warm , total b**ch when its cold.

What is she ideling at? when i did my rpm2 swap it was also a bit#h to start because it was ideling at around 500rpm cold and would climb to 700rpm warm and once warm would start easly, so i just bumped up the revs to 750rpm on cold and have no problems now, just a thought.

Reset the codes and do another diagnostic, as the EECV will store these and it's good to start clean.
Does it sound like it has a vacuum leak? I ask as the EGR could be leaking internally and when that is sorted, the EECV wont know what temp the motor is so it will run rich all the time. |

that coolant temp sensor fault can cause the ecu not to go into cold start mode, as it dont know what is warm and what is cold...

What is the operating range on the EF coolant sensor?
Mine from stone cold registers 30 degrees when you check it on the dash diagnostics. Then as the car warms up it climbs normally. It has always done from from when I got it and I thought 30 degrees might of just been the minimum they register. It would be nice if that was the issue. Capare. The cold idle once you get the piece of s**t running is fine. No issues there. It really acts like it is flooded. Obviously the injectors are still firing when trying to get it to start so that could be causing the flooding. Once it fires give it a rev and lots of black smoke............. It does always shoot out a good amount of black when you rev it. Has done it since the swap and the injectors were done. The thought of a crap lot of injectors is really niggling at me. Or the small throttle body is restricing it way too much and is creating turbalance inside the manifold instead of filling it correctly.

Have you looked at the fuel regulator and the return line?
I'll check mine using that dash diagnostics too, for sake of consistancy. |

Hmmmn very interesting.......................
Thanks for the info Troy and thanks Mark for checking yours as well. To be even more consistent I will set the XR8's dash to diagnostics and check that one first thing tomorrow morning. We might just be on to something here...............

Hope you find out the coolant temp sensor is playing up, swap it & all is well again dude.
I think I'm having issues with mine, either that or the injectors are starting to leak. They are about 420,000 old afaik. Might be time to replace or service them. Cheers ToranaGuy

Those f**k' coolant sensors man, my problem is no where near as bad as yours, but before i replaced mine with a new one, it over fueled like hell and wasn't a very happy engine.

I have a brand new Temp sensor you can have Matt, Just gotta pull it from the water rail. Can bring it to Harries if you are heading out. We can even do the swap there. I want to see this thing play nice. As i know what it can do if it is running as it should.

Thanks Brett and guys.
Got the 70mm throttle body today and a set of 24LBers. Then had to chase up a set of AU injector plugs , which lead me to someones garage where I was forced to drink cans. During a bit of discussion another possibility thrown up in the air was a dud fuel pressure regulator. So I have a spare one here that Trent has lent me to test it when I change the injectors. Brett has just dropped off another temp sensor for me to give a try to as well. Fingers crossed we will get to the bottom of it soon enough!

70mm throttle body , AU 24LB injectors , AU Maf blah blah blah are in.
Also fitted another fuel pressure regulator. I check the XR8 first thing this morning to fing that the coolant temp was 30 degrees , so I am guessing that 30 is the computers baseline and the temp sensor is ok. Good news is it started pretty much first turn of the key after I fitted everything. Will find out how the cold start is tomorrow morning. To drive the car now it is strong but is being held back. I reckon its the bigger injectors etc and stock tune that is causing the issue. Get it up in the top end of the rev range and it cracks. Down low is better and less laggy then before but still not great. Important bit is but we are getting somewhere............I think. I also found that with the new throttle body I am suffering the dreaded disease of not getting full throttle. I am only getting a bit over 3/4 so I need to remount the cable. Will get to that bit. So now the things to do are remount the throttle cable and drive it for a few weeks. If all is well and the wallet has recovered a bit it will then be time for some Moates goodness with an EL GT tune.
