Smithy mate, magic. Just spent the past 2 hours reading through all the detailed posts you've put up, and the dialogue between you and others (such as XR-lane). The whole lot's awesome.
It's a thread of epic proportions! But it's been brought down to mere mortal levels so us laymen can read and understand wtf goes on in such a big build Appreciate and respect what you've done! keep it going, not far off now, although honestly i dont know if i want to see you finish, it's too damned entertaining and interesting to read! the only downside of this thread is that i now want to rip the dash out of my EL... which for a guy of my (lack of) abilities could be dangerous lol keep it coming p.s. any updates for November??

with regards to that rear shelf...
You'll want to either get that engineered or hide the subwoofer... cops will be all over that since it's impossible to hide the big chunk of steel taken out.. when I worked in the industry, it was common to hear of cops busting people for 12's and 15's cut into their shelfs... |

yeah.... it's designed to have an 8 inch bolted under it from factory... The rear shelf is considered a structural member so it won't pass rego unless that is engineered or hidden.

yep the parcel shelf is a structial part of the car i found out the hard way with my last car the guy who had it befor me cut the parcel shelf the fit a 15 inch subwoofer and i bught the car not thinking about it and got pulled over and defected for it.
so frankieh is 100% on the money.

umm... why is everyone sookin over the parcel shelf.
in order to be legal you'd need to engineer the BA motor too..

Dark Tint Darkest legal tint anyway, then they wont see it unless Smithy is pulled over for doing something silly

yeah... the kframe mods and engine/dash transplant too, but I doubt most cops are all that knowledgable about what factory boxcar engines look like so the are unlikely to know the kframe had been modded..
rear shelf on the other hand is something they will all know. Even if you reinforce it.. at least in WA they won't accept it unless it comes with an engineering cert. When I worked for strathfield many moons ago... I saw a VK sedan cut for 2 15 inch woofers.. when you opened the boot the whole back flexed with it... |

When the time comes in the far distant future that I do this mod,,, I'm gonna use a Tig welder on the sump rather than cutting the kframe... not because I think the mods are dangerous.. but just to remove the cops wondering from the equation. |

you still need to engineer the BA engine, regardless of the Kframe etc.

Indeed, but the kframe will not need to be considered in a structural sense if I don't chop it..
In fact if the engine has all the BA/BF emission stuff.. and no non factory mounts etc are used.. it should be a fairly easy trip though.. Whereas if you have hacked looms, non standard ECU's for that engine.... chopped suspension/structural members etc.. it's in for a much harder time of it. In WA you can put later model motors in legally as long as they fit the above stuff...and if you didn't cut anything that affects structural rigidity or suspension components you don't need engineering at all. I mean if you were putting a V6 ecotech or whatever in, you'd need approval.. but to put a later version of the same engine in is perfectly ok from what I read of the rules. |

So i assume smithy isnt getting anything engineered? How about the front end change? isnt the radiator panel a structural part?

his car has tons of structural changes.. in the least the radiator support, the kframe, the firewall mods for the dash.. the doors for the inner skin changes the back shelf and probably a couple of things I've forgotten...
If he has documented everything and made appropriate measurable countermeasures to the bits he chopped out, he should be able to get a engineer to sign off on it without to much issue and a wad of cash.... |
